This story is part of my serie about cat Lucifer. It can be read as a stand-alone, all you have to know is that Lucifer is a shapeshifter that turns into a cat to visit Chloe. Trixie knows him too and she is the one that choose that cat's name.
It sets during the season 2 and follows Chloe's POV.
The favorite one
When Chloe entered the house, Trixie was running everywhere, screaming at something that her mother could not see yet. Between two giggles, Chloe could hear her daughter shouting "Lucifer! Come back! It'll be fun!". Chloe was about to say something to stand for the little pursued cat until she saw him. He was not looking any distressed, jumping from furniture to furniture, going over the couch once and under it the next time. Trixie didn't stand a chance to catch him and he knew it. When she was too far behind he even waited for her, only to jump out of reach every time she got closer.
"Mommy!" greeted Trixie when she noticed her mother's return. Temporarily forgetting about her furred victim, the little girl came to hug her mother. "Will you help me catch Lucifer?"
"Monkey, maybe Lucifer doesn't want you to catch him."
"But it'll be fun!"
"I don't think Lucifer has the same definition of "fun" as we have." answered Chloe, half thinking about her partner. Trixie pouted but not for long as she returned to the living room with a determine "I'll teach him fun.".
"Lucifer? Where are you?" Chloe chuckled. The daughter sounded just like the villain from a cheesy horror movie. Chloe could almost feel bad for the black cat if he didn't look like he was handling it so well. And for now he was nowhere to be seen. Chloe was leaning against her kitchen counter when she felt a little bump on her back.
She turned around to see Lucifer greeting her. Clever boy. Chloe patted his head and he closed his eyes and started to purr. Maybe that's what gave him away because few seconds later, Trixie was on him, holding him to her. He looked disappointed as he was taken away. Chloe trusted that if he wanted an out, he would fine a way so she went to the kitchen and started dinner. Lucicat's attitude towards her daughter reminded her of how Lucifer behaved. Always proclaiming he loathed children and yet bear (better and better must she admits) to be around Trixie.
One should never underestimate a child though. When she called them for dinner, Trixie brought Lucifer back with her. The poor cat had a big pink ribbon around his neck, a red cat T-shirt saying "I'm Hell of a cat." and was covered in shiny glitter. Lucifer looked humiliated, sparkly and defeated but did not fight her daughter when she settled him on her lap to eat. Lucifer sure did look ridiculous. Chloe couldn't help but to snap a picture, Trixie beaming with pride and Lucifer ears low, clearly not amused.
Actually he was doing pretty much nothing except from staring at her with pleading eyes. Chloe smiled back at him, not quite mocking but not that far from it. He could get away if he wanted to, he was just being a drama queen. Or he wanted to play the damsel in distress but Chloe wasn't buying it. She had enough of one Lucifer's shenanigans all day long, to fall for another one's at night.
Trixie ate her meal as fast as she could and bolted out of the kitchen, always caring Lucifer with her. As much as this cat liked to make them believe he was no fan of Trixie, he sure showed a lot of patience. Chloe cleared the table as she smiled softly. Maybe having a cat around was not such a bad idea after all. At some point, she realized how silent the rest of the house was. Weird. When she glanced around the room, she saw Trixie laying on the couch, sleeping with Lucifer on her chest. The cat then slowly raised and went … to the bathroom?
Well it was far from the weirdest thing that Lucifer had ever done. And Chloe had still some dishes to wash. She kept looking towards where Lucifer had dispersed. About five minutes later, the little black cat came back. He had somehow gotten rid of the ribbon and the T-shirt. Lucifer looked at her but when he saw she still had her hands in the soapy water, he sighted and went back toward the couch. Chloe watched lovely as he carefully settled back on the daughter's chest.
As soon as she was done with the dishes, she took her computer and sat with them. Chloe managed to do very little work because her eyes kept drifting to Trixie and Lucifer. Sooner than she would have liked it was time to get Trixie to bed. As tempting as it was, she could not let her daughter sleep all night here.
"Monkey, time to go to bed." The said Monkey answered with a grumble and one of her arm went around Lucifer whose eyes snapped open in apprehension. Chloe gave him a look that said A little help here? And as if on cue; Lucifer stirred like a lazy cat. Chloe poked his belly. It was like she just switched on his purring, as always. He then sat briefly on the daughter face before jumping on Chloe's shoulders. Trixie giggled as she opened her eyes.
"You're like a pirate and Lucifer is your parrot." said the girl in a sleepy voice. Indeed, Lucifer had settled on the shoulder and did not move as she stood. She followed Trixie to her room to tuck her in. Once in her bed, her daughter stared at them, a shadow of sadness in her young eyes.
"Mom, why does Lucifer only purrs with you?" Of course as if to confirmed her daughter's saying, the cat was so close to her, he was purring directly into her ear. "I don't know Monkey, maybe he's just shy."
"Are you his favorite?" Trixie looked somehow hurt. Chloe tried to reassured her but the traitor cat was rubbing himself on her cheek and purred twice as loud, as if to say she was completely right. Chloe glared at Lucifer who had the decency to stop the rubbing but not the purring. Trixie's lower lip started to tremble. Chloe sat on the daughter's bed. Thanks Lucifer! "Monkey …" Chloe had no idea how to comfort her daughter. She heard a small sight so very close to her ear and suddenly Lucifer jumped on the bed. He climbed on Trixie and curled under her chin. Chloe wiped her daughter's tear and smiled at her. Trixie smiled back. Lucifer curled even closer. They all noticed that he was not purring any more but Trixie seemed fine with that for now.
Chloe stayed with her daughter until she was finally asleep. When she stood, Lucifer opened one of his red eye but made no sign of moving. Chloe mouthed a silent "Thank you" before going out, leaving the door ajar for Lucifer. She then went to the bathroom in order to get ready for sleep. When she entered she noticed it straight away, the ribbon and the T-shirt Trixie had put on Lucifer were on the chair next to the sink, neatly folded.
