(AN: Hey! This is my first story. I had to write a piece for school about 2 people with separate backgrounds so I did an Upstead inspired story but made up a different childhood for Hailey. I hope you enjoy!)

TW for death

'Will you marry me?' The question which brings 2 separate souls together to become one flesh. A recent occurrence which rendered this question was between those named Jay and Hailey. They may have known each other for years, but their love had flourished by the day. You may think,'To be that perfect together, they must have been really similar, right?' Wrong. Their upbringing was far from the same…

'Jay, Will, get down here now you are going to be late for school.' His father beckoned, grabbing a few final belongings before heading out the door.'Coming dad!' The brothers responded synchronously, hurrying down the stairs.

The external areas around the house were eerie yet tranquil. A cloud of fog filled the air but a chilled breeze blissfully passed through simultaneously. A layer of condensation blanketed the window of the car, misting up the view of the fabulous city of Chicago.

A few blocks along the road later, they arrived at school. At the entrance, he was greeted by his best friend Kim and they walked in together. He had planned with the love of his life, Hailey, to meet at the lockers but hadn't received any response so consulted his friend. 'Hey, have you heard from Hailey at all?'

'Not since yesterday morning, why? She asked, concerned about this question.

'I planned to meet her this morning but got no reply, she hasn't even viewed it.'

'That's not like her at all, I hope she is okay.' He agreed with this statement and followed her to their first class, calculus, which Hailey would usually sit next to him in. After about 5 minutes into the lesson, still no sign of Hailey. She was never late for anything so Jay and Kim shared a look of severe worry. Then Jay took a glimpse at the door and saw her. He genuinely thought he was hallucinating but after a second look, he realised his eyes were not deceiving him, there she was, in the condition he was dreading.

Let's just say her upbringing was not ideal and she went through a lot at a young age. When she was at the age of 10, her family were on a road trip to Los Angeles and as they were about 5 minutes down the road they were minding their own business as a car adjacent to them blew the stop sign and BOOM! The next thing she knew her peripheral vision was impaired and a sudden ringing occurred in her ears. Once she came to a bit more, she saw that her brother Colin, who was seated next to her, had been flung backwards and his back was bent over the top of the middle row of seats, his eyeliner facing out the back window. At that moment, her heart sank to her stomach; she knew this was bad, really bad. A few hours later, she got the news the whole family had been dreading, he was gone. The rest of her childhood was a blur from then onwards, her family struggled so much with such a massive loss. Ever since that day, she had these moments where it all came flooding back which left her at rock bottom. Whenever this happened, no doubt her boyfriend Jay would be there as her emotional support. He was all she needed right then and there.

When he had mental confirmation that it was her, he shot out the classroom like a rocket to be at her aid, taking no notice that his teacher was yelling at him to return to his seat. 'What happened? Are you okay? Talk to me Hails.' He interrogated, trying his best to keep calm given her situation.

'I miss him.' She softly responded, barely able to be heard.

'Aww Hailey I'm so sorry.' He embraced her as she cried into his shoulder. His hug was all she needed in the moment, it made her feel safe. They took a few silent moments to themselves and then Jay spoke up saying 'Are you ready to go into class?'

'Yes!' She responded with teary eyes, peering down at him offering the ring.

'I love you always,' he announced as he placed the ring on her left hand, tears forming in his eyes too. This was the beginning of the next chapter in their lives, to be united for all eternity.
