This fic is part of my serie about cat Lucifer. There is no problem in reading this as a stand alone, you just need to know that Lucifer is a shapeshifter and he turns into a cat to go and see Chloe.

This story takes place between season 1 and 2 and follows Chloe's POV.

The little detective

The house was silent and almost dark. Trixie had gone to bed. And the kitchen lights were the only ones to lit the house. Chloe should have gone to bed an hour ago but she was once again reviewing a … personal case. Sprawled out in front of her were Jimmy Barnes' medical file, the bullet from that weird back alley encounter with the two paparazzi, a blood sample and a file with everything she was able to gather on Lucifer Morningstar so far (minus all the naked stuff or her files would have been thrice as large). Her computer would play on repeat the video of Lucifer throwing a suspect through a window.

Suddenly the corner of Chloe's eyes caught something. She turned her head just in time to see Catifer jumping on the counter.

"How did you got in here?"

The little back cat tilted his head to the side and moved the end of his tail. He was watching her intently with his big red eyes.

"Well. Hello to you too, Lucifer."

Seemingly happy he got closer, avoiding the bullet and the blood sample but walking over her files. He almost got to her when he stopped dead in his tracks. He turned around and Chloe swore that he looked at her files. He sniffed the bullet and watched the real Lucifer on her screen. He then turned back and looked exactly like he was rising an eyebrow at her. Chloe could have laughed but she was kinda desperate to talk to someone about that case. She couldn't talk with an actual other person because they would have thought she was crazy and the only one that wouldn't was Lucifer himself. Which meant confiding in Catifer was her best option at the moment.

"It's my partner" she told the cat. "His name is Lucifer. He says he is the Devil. Crazy right! I mean … I know that's crazy. Totally crazy … but then … then he does something and it almost seems … I mean look at that!" she pointed at her screen and Lucifer looked. "I saw him lift a man twice his weight with one hand. I saw him take bullets and be fine. I saw him bleed to death and "get better". But then I … I shot him and he was hurt, and he got a scar out of it! How is that possible?"

She was nearly screaming at Lucifer now, as much as one can scream with a child sleeping next door. The cat was perfectly impassible. For one weird instant, Chloe got the feeling that her answer was sitting right in front of her, lying in those impossibly red eyes. She felt completely entranced by Lucifer's gaze which reminded her of something else of course.

"He also has this effect on people … He is constantly drawing attention to himself even without trying to. And he does this thing like … he looks at people in the eyes and BOUM they tell him everything he wants to know. He tried with me but that just make him look like a perv." Lucifer's tail twitched so hard it got him standing and he started waking away, but Chloe was too far gone in her story to stop.

"It's like everyone sees something of him that I can't. And trust me, most of the time I'm glad, but … some times, some very little times I wish I could see it too. I wish I could understand."

Lucifer carefully picked the blood sample into his mouth and brought it to Chloe. She took it.

"You're right. I just have to give that to the lab and I'll know. I'll know if he is just the son of a Californian plumber or if he is …" Chloe could not help but laugh. "If he is what? If he actually is the Devil? A crime solving one on top of that! Ah! This is nonsense. Absolute nonsense."And yet her words sound weak even to her own ears. Lucifer took the opportunity to slither between her and the counter, sitting on her lap, head resting on her forearm. Instinctively Chloe started rubbing circle on that little head with her other hand as she, once again, went through the files, this time to the sound of Lucifer's purring.
