A Man's Best Friend

Perhaps it was Eric knowing how Max took time to warm up to strangers. Or maybe it was his recalling the dog's unusual behavior over the last two days.

Thus, the prince did not immediately reject his initial supposition. Carefully he stepped closer. Blue as the ocean, the mute girl's eyes were gentle and warm, like a sweet abyss. Quietly he gazed deeply into them for an endless moment. And he felt his heart leap in his chest.

"It is you! You're the one who saved my life."

The girl's face lit up. She nodded, reached up to touch his cheek.

Max looked between the two with an air of great satisfaction.

Eric's own joy was checked. Obviously, his rescuer was in trouble: voice gone, struggling to get her footing on land.

"Thank you. You helped me, now I'm going to help you. It will be okay. I won't leave you," he promised, embracing her protectively.

She looked up at him. The hope and trust shining in her eyes made the prince's heart ache. Tenderly he kissed her forehead. Then her mouth.

"Eric!"

At their feet Max ran in joyous circles and barked enthusiastically.

(That night the dog received extra treats, Ariel gave him a belly rub, and an earnest, "Thanks, Max," was murmured in his ear by Eric.)
