Where would we run if we could stay all day in the sun
For years I have tried to picture it…dancing with legs, twirling hand in hand with a partner. I have wondered what it would feel like. Yet never in my wildest dreams have I imagined this.
Prince Eric moves slowly, then more quickly, turns in circles, steps confident and graceful; all while holding me, one arm under my tail and the other wrapped around my back. My hands are clasped behind his neck as I lean against his chest, my cheek touching his. And the dance is glorious: becoming lost in the music floating onto the balcony, the wind playing with my braids, the stars spinning above my head, Eric's body heat chasing away the night chill.
He is so kind, I think, to do this for me…
All too soon it ends...the music fades...there's applause from the ballroom. I sigh as my friend's movements stop. For a second he rocks me gently back and forth, as though reluctant like I for our dance to be over.
"Thank you," I whisper shakily, blinking back tears. I kiss his cheek.
Eric turns his head, his light eyes catching my dark ones. Butterflies flutter in my stomach at the wondrously affectionate expression on his face. I smile. His gaze drops to my mouth before returning to my eyes once more, and I blush.
"Ariel, may I kiss you?" Eric asks almost in a whisper, longing coloring his words.
Nervous excitement races down my spine. "Yes, Eric," I reply quietly.
I meet his waiting mouth halfway. And the kiss is gentle, lingering, tasting of fulfilled wishes and newborn dreams.
