Third Time's the Charm
This is my first fanfiction. I recently finished The Mysterious Benedict Society and wondered to myself, what was Kate's life like in the Circus? So I'm here to give you my idea of what might have happened back then. I hope you like this story, happy reading!
P.S: nothing in this story should contradict MBS, all is according to the actual books. Obviously, I'm adding things that were never mentioned in the series, but that's the fun of it! No need to worry, though, I will not be changing or removing a thing from the original books.
Three years old
Kate Wetherall scurried out the orphanage window for the seventh time. She had concluded that if she continued sneaking out, the orphanage would let her stay in the circus. Unfortunately, it had already been six times she had escaped and the orphanage found her and brought her back once again. But Kate was determined the process repeated for almost a week.
If only she had a kind parent who would give her a real home, or even allow her to join the circus. It was her passion, after all. But no, and she never would. Kate's mother is dead and her father is gone. Kate knows she will eventually escape, but when that night comes, she won't waste a second searching for her father.
The night was cold, so she was quite glad she decided to wear her jacket, even if it did make a faint crunching sound when she ran. Luckily, Kate's room was on the first floor, so she wouldn't have to go through the trouble of jumping out the window. Instead, she could simply quietly crawl out the small window and sprint through the streets of her hometown. Not that an orphanage really was a home…
Dodging lights which may reveal her, and people who may question her, she ran like the wind across the town. But she couldn't be the wind. The wind was too slow for Kate Wetherall. She might as well have been a tornado. How could a three year old be so fast? Nobody knows. A runner at two, and an expert swimmer at one.
But that's besides the point. In less than five minutes, (across two miles if I may add) the town was behind her, and a large white and red striped tent was before her. Never had she ever felt so happy, breathing the crisp air of the night, about to possibly be with the Circus forever… Well, maybe that's not true. It must have been the day Kate visited the beach with her father, before he left her. It was a beautiful day. The sun shone on her olive skin, and her feet melted into the warm sand as seawater lightly sprinkled her face. She remembered his strong arms lifting her out of the water, speaking to her in a gentle, kind voice. How could someone with such a wonderful voice be so cruel to her? Was it because she was too much to handle? Well, these thoughts were far too much for a three year old to handle, so she shoved them aside and stepped inside the tent to begin her new life.
For the third time.
P.P.S: This is an extremely short chapter, but you've probably noticed that. I guess you could think of it as a prologue. Well, I hoped you liked that, and please review if you'd like to see more! I'll try to upload the first chapter today or tomorrow!
Thank you!
