Wins & Losses
By musical-Aven
It all went down so fast. They were eating a sandwich at a random dinner in downtown Ohio. Actually, Olivia was eating half of his turkey sandwich he had ordered, but Stabler was okay with that because he knew full well she hadn't eaten yet today.
This case was brutal, complex. The gang was ruthless and dangerous. Everyone, including their squads, were working this on every level possible in the last couple of days. Their trip to Ohio had intensified the long hours and limited their sleep. But this was important, and everyone were pulling all-nighters to catch the bad guys.
When Elliot had gone to meet her this morning, at her hotel room, they had jumped into the case right away. Almost.
"Hey," she opened the door quickly, "I'll just be a minute." She motioned for him to come in and pointed to the phone in her hand. "Noah, honey, I'll have to leave soon for work."
She was talking to her son on facetime, the screen pulled up in front of her face as she walked back to the bigger space in the room. Elliot entered, closed the door behind him, but stayed at the entrance not wanting to invade her private conversation. He leaned on the corridor's wall, watching her in mom-mode. She was almost ready, dressed in proper pants and a white tank top, which he knew she would cover eventually with a blazer. She was ruffling through her jewel's box pulling two earrings from it, moving quickly to the bathroom in which he had a full view from his spot. He followed her with his eyes, appreciating her morning routine.
"Talk to Mrs Fletcher about your homework and I'm sure that math test will go great, okay?"
"Yeah mom, thanks." The pre-teen answered. "Is that Elliot?"
Olivia stopped moving for a moment, startled. He must have seen him when she moved around.
"Yeah, Elliot's team and mine are working together."
Wanting to ease the tension, he weighted in.
"Hey Noah." He greeted from the corridor, a little loud so he would be heard.
Olivia turned the phone a little so her son could see him.
"Hey Elliot!" he sounded excited. "Mom, I wanna say hi."
Olivia hesitated only a moment before extending her arm to give the phone to him. Elliot gladly took it.
"Hey buddy. So, a math test is on the agenda today?" he engaged in the conversation.
Olivia felt her heart flutter at that. She motioned to him that she'd brush her teeth while he talked to her son. Elliot nodded, understanding her without words.
"Yeah…I'm not very good at math…"
Stabler looked up for a brief moment to catch Olivia's eyes in the mirror while she put the toothbrush in her mouth.
"Have you studied?"
"Yes…" the boy answered exasperated.
"Then I'm sure you'll do fine."
"Just like that?"
"If you did every homework to prepare, there's not much you can do. Just trust that you have done enough."
Noah stayed silent, which told Olivia he was taking in Elliot's words.
"You and mom are working together, just like old times?"
Elliot smiled.
"Yeah, just like old times."
Noah hesitated.
"So…you'll look after her? Just like when you were partners?"
Elliot didn't raise his gaze again, but out of the corner of his eyes he saw Olivia halt as she wiped her mouth.
"I will, Noah. She's safe with me, I promise."
"Good," the boy sounded relieved, and it tore their hearts in pieces. Since the BX9 attack, he was a bit more jumpy and scared for his mom. "Make sure she eats, she forgets when she works so-"
"Alright, that's enough, we really have to go now." Olivia intervened grabbing her phone back from Elliot's hands. "Bye sweetheart, have a great day. We'll talk tonight alright?"
"Yes. Talk to you tonight. Love you!"
"Love you too."
"Bye Elliot!" the boy called out.
Olivia rolled her eyes smiling and turned again so Elliot was in the view of the camera.
"Bye Noah!" he waived from his spot.
"He knows you well." Elliot spoke after she ended the call.
"Yeah, but you already know I don't get hungry during a big case like this." she said, avoiding his gaze. She seemed to be looking for something in her suitcase.
"I'll try to feed you subtilty then."
She didn't snort as he expected her to.
"Just make sure I don't run out of coffee." She said shuffling through her clothes.
"What are you looking for?"
"My blazer."
"There." he points to the chair.
"No not this one."
"What's wrong with this one?"
"I wore it yesterday."
"So? You looked good in it." He said quickly, neither of them realizing what he had said.
"Well, let's hope I look as good in this one." She answered as quickly, pulling out a darker blazer.
"You'd look good in nothing and anything, Liv." He spoke quickly, his brain not able to stop the words from falling from his mouth.
Her hands slowed down as she put the vest on, her eyes going up to his, his words finally registering.
"I mean…I just mean-"
"It's okay." She smiled, her cheeks rosier than before.
Elliot didn't want to make her uncomfortable, even though the compliment was true. She grabbed her bag and walked towards him, ready to leave.
"Thanks, El." She smiled, stopping in front of him.
That seemed to let the tension fall a little.
"I swear I'll get better at this." He acknowledged his nervousness, and tested her waters at the same time.
She laughed. First win of the day.
"Good." She cocked her head on the side fondly.
Elliot was surprised she would let him compliment her again, but took a moment to savour it.
"Ready, partner?" he asked, stirring up the Benson and Stabler in them.
"Ready." She answered, determined.
The second win of the day was Jet discovering a major crack in the case.
There was no third win though. As they were talking the case over a quick lunch, they had missed Jet's mistake and were victims of an ambush.
