Chapter 31. In love
Walking outside the door of the main room, Yue You Ting stopped and cheered for herself. Shortly later, she walked into the main room with light steps: "Grandfather, Mother asked me to bring some tea."
Voice as delicate as a bird's chirp slightly pulled the heart's string.
However, Yue Da Fu didn't notice this and gave a slight nod: "Hurry up and serve tea to the guests."
Yue You Ting served tea to Yue Da Fu first. Then she served tea to her two brothers and Zhou Jun Peng pair: "Gentlemen, please have tea."
Zhou Jun Peng smiled very gently: "Troubled Miss Yue."
Intentionally or unintentionally, the hand that took the teacup touched Yue You Ting's slender-like-scallion soft palm. Yue You Ting's hand that held the teacup trembled slightly. A shy blush appeared on her face. The room was dimly lit, so no one else noticed.
After serving the tea, Yue You Ting, an unmarried girl, naturally wouldn't have the cheek to stay in the main room with the unmarried men. She shyly stole a few glances at Zhou Jun Peng who watched her with a burning gaze as she reluctantly left. Zhou Jun Peng left the main room reluctantly. Occupied with their conversation, Yue Family's members what happened to the two of them.
Seeing that Yue You Ting was gone, Zhou Jun Peng returned to his appearance as a refined gentleman. He smilingly accompanied Yue Wen Tao in telling Yue Da Fu about interesting things in the academy. As if the person who looked at Yue Youting with a very explicit gaze just now wasn't him.
Back to Yue You Ting who left the main room and blushingly returned to the kitchen with the tray. Seeing her daughter's blushing face, Mrs. Chen was overjoyed. She didn't care whether her hands were dirty or not and hurriedly flocked to her: "How is it? Did you see the two young masters?"
Disgusted, Yue You Ting warded Mrs. Chen's outstretched hand with the tray: "Mother, this is my new clothes!"
"You girl, you're so delicate!" Mrs. Chen wasn't angry about being blocked. She was anxious about how the tea delivery to the main room went: "Quickly tell Mother. I only saw them from a distance. They looked well dressed, but I can't see what they look like."
Yue You Ting recalled the gentle and jade-like gentleman who had inadvertently touched her fingertips. Her face involuntarily turned red: "Mother! What do you want me to say!"
No matter what, Mrs. Chen was an experienced person. It went without saying the sight of her daughter being shy told her the matter was half settled. She clapped her hands in delight and then asked, "Have those two young gentlemen talked to you? "
"En, Gentleman Zhou is gentle and polite. He thanked me." Thinking of that gentle and polite smiling face, Yue You Ting's whole fallen heart fell deeper: "Gentlemen Zhou, is wonderful."
After saying that, she turned her head and ran back to the east wing.
Seeing her daughter's reaction, Mrs. Chen knew that her daughter was interested. She happily positioned herself in the kitchen. Eagered to use all her power to cook a good meal for her future son-in-law.
Yue Chang Hong came quickly. Just as Yue Family's food was set on the table, Yue Chang Lu stopped the ox cart outside. Since Yue Chang Lu and her daughter were wrapped in quilts, they easily patted away all the snowflakes on their bodies. Only then did they open the door of Yue's house with a smile. Compared with weak-as-Liu-Fu-Feng Yue You Ting, Ge Liu-er was a somewhat rounded girl. She wasn't tall. But with those big round eyes on her fleshy face, she looked pleasing.
Although she didn't know her mother's intentions before going out, she followed old Mrs. Chen's advice, which was passed by Yue Chang Hong when he picked them up, and dressed her daughter up. Her daughter wore a half-new pink outer garment. Ge Liu-er had embroidered a few goose-yellow flower patterns on the sleeve and hem. From a distance, there was a bit of the maiden's unique charm.
Hearing the movement outside, old Mrs. Chen hurriedly came out to welcome them. Seeing that her daughter and granddaughter were all dressed up, she nodded with satisfaction: "Today our family did the New Year pig slaughter. We got distinguished guests. Come in with me to see the distinguished guests first before we talk."
As soon as she heard that distinguished guests were at home, Yue Chang Hong couldn't help but feel a little nervous: "Mother! What kind of distinguished guests have come?"
Yue Chang Hong knew that her family didn't know any dignitaries. That's why she didn't believe it when this was said.
"It's Wen Tao's classmates in the academy. The one surnamed Zhou is the distant nephew of the county master's wife. The other surnamed Liu is from the family who opened a silk and satin shop in the county town!" Old Mrs. Chen grinningly whispered to her daughter. She had just found this out.
When she heard that it was the nephew of the county master, Yue Chang Hong's eyes brightened: "Really?"
Ge Liu-er was almost fourteen. Now was the time to look for an in-law family. If they were perfect, first get engaged, wait for coming-of-age, and get married.
"Would Mother jest with you?" Although old Mrs. Chen was very patriarchal to her granddaughters, but she loves her only daughter like a pearl. Naturally, whatever good arrives, she would prioritise her: "The two young masters are also the right age. If not, I wouldn't urge your second younger brother to pick you up!"
The mother and daughter pair were calculating as they walked. Ge Liu-er, who was following behind them, experienced a maiden's heart throbbing period. Her face blushed as she shyly bowed her head. Without a word, she followed Yue Chang Hong with small steps.
Although the snow had stopped, it was still cold outside. Yue Family set up three tables in the hall of the main room for this pig-slaughter meal. The village relatives and the men who came to help with the pig-slaughter sat at one table. Yue Wen Tao Brothers and the two distinguished guests sat on another. Last had the female family members.
When Yue Chang Hong entered, the main room was already full of people. Yue Chang Hong smiled warmly: "It's better that I come earlier than come by coincidence!"
"Must say, my younger sister Chang Hong is thoughtful. To come see Father and Mother in this big snowy weather! You didn't freeze on the road, right!" Mrs. Chen smiled kindly while her heart pulsed with a little resentment. This dead old woman really prioritised her daughter in everything. This Yue Chang Hong was also a nuisance. She even snatched her potential marriage matter!
"It's only right to come back and see Father and Mother. Eldest Sister-in-law, don't busy yourself. I heard from Mother that today's dishes are all made by you. It's better to sit and rest for a while!" Yue Chang Hong pulled away Mrs. Chen's hand with a poker face. Her eyes roamed and glanced over everyone in the room. Sure enough, she found two young gentlemen who were dressed far better than Yue Family's brothers. Smilingly, she walked over: "These two lads are fresh faces. Which family's younger generation are you?"
Zhou Jun Peng politely stood up and gave a scholar's salute: "Hello, Auntie Yue. I'm Younger Generation Zhou Jun Peng."
Taking in Zhou Jun Peng's charming eyebrows, Yue Chang Hong had the feeling of a mother-in-law looking at her son-in-law. The more she looked, the more satisfied she became. She warmly grinned: "Hello, Gentleman Zhou. Our family is from the remote areas. If anything is lacking, do speak. Wen Tao, you brothers must not neglect the guests!"
Seeing her overly-friendly attitude, Mrs. Chen silently tsked. Completely disdaining Yue Chang Hong's diving for the bait expression. She forgot how she, herself, had made Yue You Ting come out to show her face earlier.
Seeing well-dressed Ge Liu-er standing behind Yue Chang Hong, a few experienced women revealed a knowing smile. A woman who was close to Mrs. Chen whispered to her: " What's the matter with your sister-in-law? Why did she bring her daughter here?"
With a stiff smile on her face, Mrs. Chen whispered through gritted teeth: "What else can I do? It's Mother's good deed! After seeing a younger generation with potential, she eagerly called her daughter to come. Not even thinking about her own family's granddaughter!"
When the woman heard this, she frowned and replied, "You are her biological niece! Why is your mother leaning toward the married daughter? Trully biased!"
The men in the main room who were toasting and urging each other to drink were very rowdy. The two of them were swiftly and accurately clipping the pork from the bowl as they complained in a hushed voice. No one else could hear them.
Though the main room was lively, it had nothing to do with You Jin sisters. When the dishes were ready, old Mrs. Chen directly fished most of the meaty dishes into the bowls that were served on the table in the main room. Only some minced meat, pig offal, numerous potatoes and numerous Chinese cabbage were left in the pot: "Today, distinguished guests are here. You're not allowed to go in and shame our eyes!"
Old Mrs. Chen and the rest of Yue Family felt that it was an honor to be able to go to the main room for dinner today. For example, there was Wan Niang, who couldn't participate. She was so angry that she refused to eat. Yue Chang Lu coaxed her for a long time. Coaxed until old Mrs. Chen sent You Jin to ask him to go to dinner and left a furious Wan Niang in the room alone.
You Jin sisters were delighted and relaxed. They happily carried the several bowls of multigrain rice and two small pots of steaming dishes and trotted back to the west wing. The mother and eight daughters sat on the outer kang and heartily ate a full meal.
While Wan Niang, who was separated by a wall, heard the chatter and laughter next door. She felt that they were ridiculing her and wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes: "Each and every one of you wants to see me make a joke out of myself. One day I will let those little lowly lasses see!" She cursed in a low voice and wished to smash all the food on the table. But the smell of meat and the fact that she hadn't eaten anything in the morning, made her unconsciously bring the bowl over and gobbled it all in a few bites.
It goes without saying that You Jin sisters couldn't enter the main room to eat at the table. And it was still their job to wash the dishes. Half an hour after the meal in the west wing, You Luo and You Chou had already been coaxed to sleep. Only then Yue Wen Wei's voice rang out from outside. He was sent to get them to clean up: "Yue You Jin! Hurry up and get out to work!"
She gently covered the few younger sisters with the quilts and instructed You Yin to stay in the room to keep watch. You Jin went to the main room alone and respectfully spoke, "Grandfather, Grandmother, I'll clean it up."
In front of outsiders, You Jin was a sensible and polite child.
Sure enough, a clan aunt who came to help cook the pig-slaughter meal smiled and commented to old Mrs. Chen: "Old Aunt is very blessed. The girls from second branch is only this big and she's so diligent and capable. It can be seen that old Aunt knows how to teach children!"
The few women present were also sharp-minded. The room was full of rough men from the village. Normally, would they see Yue You Ting and Ge Liu-er at the table? Who can't see old Mrs. Chen's aim? They were all from the same village. They would give face to old Mrs. Chen and say a few friendly remarks. It was just a matter of lip service and also considered getting the good side. They were still willing to do this.
Old Mrs. Chen was a person with an inflated ego. When others praised her like this in front of everyone's eyes, she internally bloomed like a flower. On the surface, she kept a poker smile: "It's just a rural girl. It isn't worth you praising her."
You Jin didn't even bother to watch such a scene of emptiness and condescension. She gathered the empty dishes one by one and put them in the big wooden basin. Then she lifted them up with both hands and went out.
Chapter 32. Fighting wind and eating vinegar
At this time, Zhou Jun Peng, who was sitting on the side, suddenly stood up and walked to You Jin: "Little sister, do you need a hand?"
Before You Jin could react, Yue You Ting and Ge Liu-er immediately jumped up and uttered in unison, "No need!"
This sudden action startled the women who had yet to disperse. Seeing everyone's eyes fall on them, the two of them instantly blushed and opened their mouths. However, they didn't know what to say.
It was Yue Chang Hong who wrapped her head around first. Smilingly, she seamlessly stood between You Jin and Zhou Jun Peng. Her butt intentionally bumped into You Jin. On the surface, she showed no trace of this: "Gentleman Zhou, these chores should be done by the family. You're a distinguished guest. We can't let your hands get dirty, right? I just heard Wen Li say that he's going to take you somewhere to play? Why don't you go out explore while it's still bright?"
She winked at Wen Tao winked and Yue Wen Tao immediately caught on: "Yes! Jun Li, this is the so-called gentleman stay way from kitchen. Let them do these things, I will take you to Cui Feng River to play!"
As the sound of 'play', slightly bored Liu Ruo Shan perked up at once: "Alright! Let's go out to play!"
After saying that, he dragged Zhou Jun Peng outside.
Seeing everyone like this, Zhou Jun Peng couldn't anything else. Just smiled apologetically at Yue You Jin who was blocked by Yue Chang Hong before going out with Yue Wen Tao and others.
Seeing them go out, Mrs. Chen's mind spun and she hurriedly pushed Yue You Ting: "You Ting has been in the village for a long time. She is familiar with everywhere. Let You Ting go with you!"
Being pushed by Mrs. Chen so suddenly, You Ting stumbled a little. Fortunately, Zhou Jun Peng, who was standing closest to her, stretched out his hand to help her stand stable.
Just as she stood firm, Zhou Jun Peng let go of her: "I've offended you, Miss Yue. Be careful."
Although Yue You Ting wasn't very beautiful, she was still delicately attractive. She blushed and lowered her head as she murmured, "Thank you, Gentleman Zhou."
Seeing perfect the two looked together, Yue Chang Hong felt a little unwilling. It felt like she paved the way for others. She hurriedly pulled Ge Liu-er out: "Liu-er rarely go out. Now there's a chance to play with you, Wen Tao, you take Liu-er with you on your stroll around."
On the spot, Wen Tao glanced at Zhou Jun Peng and Liu Ruo Shan. Seeing that neither of them said anything, he nodded. The group of four men and two women went to Cuifeng River.
After sending off the few youth, the clan's married women smilingly bid their goodbye. All at once, only old Mrs. Chen, her daughter, and Mrs. Chen were left in the main room.
Seeing that everyone was gone, Yue Chang Hong's gentle smile gradually disappeared off her face. She glared at Mrs. Chen with bulging eyes, "Eldest Sister-in-law, what are you doing?"
Yue Chang Hong had always disliked this sister-in-law. Before Mrs. Chen married into Yue Family, Mrs. Chen always loved to compete with her when they were still cousins. Never thought, she would still fight with her now when it came to her daughter's marriage?
Mrs. Chen looked at Yue Chang Hong with a 'clueless' expression: "Younger Sister, I don't understand what you're saying. What did I do?"
Seeing that she won't admit, Yue Chang Hong stuck to old Mrs. Chen's side and grabbed her arm: "Mother! Look at Eldest Sister-in-law. You watched Liu-er grow up. With her appearance and character, would it go wrong? If this is just missed, then won't Liu'er blame me in the future!"
Needless to say, old Mrs. Chen will protect Yue Chang Hong. She patted Yue Chang Hong's hand that was tugging at her clothes. Then she shot a glare at Mrs. Chen: "Look at you anxious expression. Don't think no one can see your thoughts. I only got this one daughter and you love to fight with her since you were a child. As long as you don't make trouble, would I get involved? You have been fighting all your life, this time let Yue Hong."
Mrs. Chen didn't agree. She clapped her hands, sat on the kang, and wailed, "My god! When did I bully Yue Hong! I'm going to be wronged to death by this old phrase of yours!"
"Stop howling! Can't you give us a day of piece!?" Old Mrs. Chen wasn't afraid of her throwing a tantrum, "This is settled. You will call You Ting back in a while."
Old Mrs. Chen was used to her daughter and daughters-in-law listening to her own words. So she won't give in because of Mrs. Chen's few dry hollers.
Mrs. Chen didn't expect old Mrs. Chen to be so heartless this time. Her mind spun and uttered, "Mother, our You Ting is also your granddaughter, no? Gentleman Zhou didn't say he fancy Liu-er, no? If Gentleman Zhou directly said he fancy Liu-er, I wouldn't let You Ting follow him."
Seeing Yue Chang Hong's expression become a little ugly, Mrs. Chen hurriedly struck while the iron was hot: "Mother, think about it. If Gentleman Zhou fell in love with You Ting and you didn't let You Ting go out to encounter him, you'll cut off a lot of marriages!"
"Pah! Only your, Chen Xiao Juan's, daughter is gold? How could Gentleman Zhou be attracted to that skinny vegetable from your family!" Yue Chang Hong fiercely spat on the ground: "A vegetable sprout that can be blown away by a bit of wind. Still want to climb high branches!"
"You don't want to climb high branch? Then why are you fighting with me on this!" Mrs. Chen was so annoyed with her that she started clawing. However, old Mrs. Chen got quick hand-eye coordination and slapped Mrs. Chen's outstretched assaulting hand: "What trouble are you trying to stir! All sit down!"
Seeing that old Mrs. Chen was truly enraged a little, Mrs. Chen sat back down with her mouth shut. Old Mrs. Chen's next sentence made her feel a lot more relieved.
"Although your eldest sister-in-law is going too far, what she said is reasonable. Currently who Gentleman Zhou fancy is still unknown. It's just hanging out for a while. This is the end to this matter. But if Gentleman Zhou reveal his thoughts, the other one is not allowed to make trouble." Old Mrs. Chen stated in a calm voice. Then she comforted the somewhat unwilling Yue Chang Hong.
Yue Chang Hong originally wanted to say something else, but seeing old Mrs. Chen glance over, she didn't say anything. Fuming, she sat down on the edge of the kang as she ignored others.
Back to the few young people who went to Cuifeng River. When they got to Cuifeng River and were greeted by the sight of many village children holding boards and sliding down from the top. It was a distance of more than ten feet.
Liu Ruo Shan found it novel. On top of that, he was playful by nature. He urged Yue Wen Li to take the board and go to the place where the children were sliding down from. Cuifeng River originated in Cuifeng Mountain. Naturally, it flowed from high to low. At the entrance of Cuifeng Village's, the water flow slowed down and the river surface became wider. The children slid down from a height and headed to the edge of the place where Yue Wen Tao and others were standing. Full of merriment and liveliness.
Yue Wen Li was dragged away by Liu Ruo Shan. Only Yue Wen Tao, Zhou Jun Peng, Yue You Ting and Ge Liu-er were left standing on the edge of the thick iced river. A moment of silence.
Noticing the gazes around her that seemed to be inquiringly peek at her, Yue You Ting lowered her head shyly. She was too embarrassed to talk to Zhou Jun Peng directly. So she spoke to Yue Wen Tao: "Eldest Brother, you bring Gentleman Zhou over to play then? You have to do the best of the local host."
Yue Wen Tao agreed with this thought. He glanced at Zhou Jun Peng: "Brother Zhou, what do you think?"
Although Yue Wen Tao asked like this, his eyes were full of contempt when he watched those who played. Really ignorant mudlegs. If it weren't for Brother Liu's playfulness, he disdained standing on the same side to these people who played.
Zhou Jun Peng observed how tatteredly dressed and red faced the country children were. Though he didn't like it on the inside, he didn't directly show contempt like Yue Wen Tao. Warmly smiling, he politely spoke. "I never liked these. While Ruo Shan does. Let him go wild then."
Taking in the jade-like-tree-in-the-snowy-environment Gentleman Zhou, the admiration in the eyes of Yue You Ting and Ge Liu-er had increased by a few more notch. Gentleman Zhou was really different from these mud legs!
Ge Liu-er recalled it was Yue You Ting who suggested Gentleman Zhou to play and looked at Yue You Ting with a disdainful smirk: "Exactly. This is rolling around on the ground, what is what the scholar called humiliating. Really Elder Cousin Sister. You actually made such a suggestion!"
After that, she moved a little bit with disgust. Expressing that she wasn't on the same page as her.
Glancing at Gentleman Zhou who had an unclear gaze, Yue You Ting looked embarrassed and stammered: "I-I didn't mean that. Younger Cousin Sister, you think too much..."
Yue Wen Tao didn't speak. Even his gaze toward Yue You Ting carried a hint of disapproval. No one was able to relieve the dire strait for a while. Embarrassment on Yue You Ting's face increased by slightly more. She even dropped her with slight aggrievances. She was just afraid of neglecting Gentleman Zhou. She never thought that much!
Just when Yue You Ting didn't know what to do, Zhou Jun Peng helped her out. First he gave Yue You Ting a scholar's bow before speaking with a faint smile: "Miss Yue must have made an unintentional mistake. I don't have any intention to blame anyone. Miss Yue don't need to feel guilty."
Ge Liu-er didn't expect Zhou Jun Peng to save Yue You Ting. Seeing Yue You Ting, who was like a blooming flower with a dog's wagging tail, Ge Liu-er snorted heavily. But after glancing Zhou Jun Peng, she still held back the displeasure in her heart. She merrily spoke, "It turns out that I misunderstood Elder Cousin Sister. I'm really sorry."
Blushing, Yue You Ting secretly glanced at Zhou Jun Peng, who was staring at her with a smile. Her maiden heart had already been occupied by Zhou Jun Peng. How could she still hear what Ge Liu-er said?
Ge Liu-er looked at the two people who were staring at each other. Her heart burned with anger. She and Yue You Ting were only half a year apart. She loved to fight with her since young. As long as Mother bring her to her maternal home, she secretly bully her. This time, she still fight with her! Her gaze toward Yue You Ting gradually filled with embarrassed anger. This time she won't lose!
At the other end, Liu Ruo Shan had already slid down the river twice. His face was flushed from the cold wind. He turned around and noticed the group was still standing in the distance. He waved to that side: "Brother Zhou, come play. It's fun!"
Seeing Liu Ruo Shan immersed in fun, everyone's face showed an unidentified smile. Zhou Jun Peng also waved at him: "I won't go down. Brother Liu, keep playing by yourself!"
Seeing that they won't join in, Liu Ruo Shan didn't bother. He happily dragged the board up again. The few people fell into silence again. Standing there, each had their own thoughts.

Chapter 34. Different thoughts on year end
Let's not talk about how Ge Liu-er's tantrum and complaints to Yue Chang Hong in her room. Early the next morning, Zhou Jun Peng waved his sleeves and said goodbye to Cuifeng Village under the girls' reluctant gaze and different mind-wave.
Failing to take the opportunity to catch the golden tortoise-in-law Zhou Jun Peng, Yue Chang Hong was indeed dissatisfied. She had nowhere to vent. So she could only fumingly take Ge Liu-er back to Gejia Village.
The snow repeatedly stopped and fell. It was New Year's Eve in a blink of an eye.
Naturally the New Year's Eve's ancestor worship had nothing to do with the daughters. Mrs. Su's condition was getting worse and worse. Her tall belly and thin face highlighted her feebleness. She could only stay in bed all day to nurture her pregnancy.
Mrs. Han didn't know about Wan Niang's entering the family door. Yue Chang Shou only knew about it when Yue Chang Lu asked someone to send a letter. Two days ago, Third branch finally returned to Cuifeng Village for the New Year. When Mrs. Han knew the news, she was so mad with nowhere to vent. She didn't give Wan Niang any good attitude, when she went to the west wing to see Mrs. Su.
"Second Sister-in-law, how can you agree to let that vixen Wan Niang in?" Why else was there a saying women know women the best? Mrs. Han didn't like Wan Niang at first sight when she saw her. Naturally she wouldn't be too polite with her words.
When Mrs. Su first saw her coming, there was a faint smile on her face. But upon the mention of Wan Niang, the smile in her eyes disappeared. The rest was full of deep sadness. She shook her head with a wry smile and replied: "Does it need my consent? We have been sister-in-laws for more than ten years. When have you seen me with an inch of position in this family?"
Seeing that something was amiss with her, Mrs. Han felt a little annoyed at what she said just now. She sighed slightly: "Forget it. Second Sister-in-law, no matter what, you still have the few children. If you can't take care of yourself for yourself, do it for the few children."
The two sister-in-laws talked in the room for a while before Mrs. Han came out of the room. When she was leaving the west wing, she quietly stuffed a purse heavily embroidered with white magnolia for You Yin: "Wait for your third elder sister to come back and tell her to store it well. There will always be a time when you need it."
Knowing that it was money, You Yin quickly pushed it back: "Third Aunt, we can't accept it. Third Elder Sister won't accept it."
Lovingly rubbing You Yin's head, Mrs. Han felt a little distressed for these sensible children in the second branch: "Silly child, once your mother gave birth, which doesn't need money? Although the money isn't much, it is a little thought from Third Aunt. Store it well." After saying that, she waved her hand and went back to the east wing.
You Yin couldn't refuse. She had to put the money away. Once You Jin come back, she'll give it to her to hide.
You Jin opened the purse given by Mrs. Han. It turned out that there was about a hundred copper coins in it. Her gratitude toward to Mrs. Han deepened more. She mentally vowed once their life is well off, she must repay Mrs. Han for sending coal in the snow.
The New Year's Eve dinner was eaten after worshipping the ancestors in the ancestral hall. Although it was New Year, the food was similar to the usual meal: a large pot of stewed eggplant with potatoes and a large pot of cabbage. However, the meat inside was more than in the past. In addition, there was a large pot of three-mixed dumplings filled with cabbage and pork was prepared. This was considered celebrating New Year.
However, old Mrs. Chen didn't live for so many years in vain. Although it was the same dish, two-thirds of the meat end up on the men's table. As for the female's side, it was stinky offal and dumplings filled with cabbage and meat residue.
The girls in the second branch have all put on the half-new and old clothes that Han brought back last time. The broken part of the jacket outside was also covered by Mrs. Su's skillful embroidery pattern. The sisters finally had the rare experience of wearing new clothes like this. They all neatly sat and each held a thick porcelain bowl. They enjoyed it greatly. Although the pig's offal wasn't very well handled, it was still considered to be meaty. A rare meat flavor. They had to eat it!
In stark contrast to the second branch's girls was Wan Niang: She was picked at this and that. After half a day, she didn't eat two bites. Her face was full of impatience. It was enough that they didn't get much meat on most day. Why can't they have a good meal on New Year? However, she didn't dare to say anything. If the two undying get angered on New Year's Eve, then she would be a sinner.
Mrs. Han noticed Wan Niang's impatience and snorted a few times in her heart. Did she think she married into Yue Family to enjoy luxury? Glancing at You He, who was also unable to eat, she pointed at mulberry when actually the locust: "Being a city folk for a few days and don't know where your roots are? Still being picky? Quickly eat, if not, don't ask me for snacks when you're hungry."
From the start, You He was a little unhappy. Now she had suffered a disaster all of a sudden, her pouted mouth can hang on an oil bottle: "Mother!"
Mrs. Han sent a pointed glance at her: "What? I'm your mother. Can't say a word to you?"
There was a expression "I'm your mother, I'm the biggest".
Although You He had been pampered when growing up, she hadn't been raised crookedly. Mrs. Han's education had contributed a lot to this. Upon Mrs. Han's words, how could You He possibly dare to say anything. She could only honestly eat.
Wan Niang, who was sitting next to her, had a very ugly expression. Third branch's Mrs. Han never showed her any good attitude when she came back. Now it was New Year's Eve dinner and she still so cynical and scolding her. How can she, a tactful-mind, not sense it?
Looking at the mocking face and then receiving a quick glance from not-so-obvious-smirking You Jin, Wan Niang only felt that her cheeks were hot. First Mrs. Han Shi, then You Jin. Wan Niang's teeth were itching with hate. There was nothing she could do though. Only jot it do in her mind and wait for revenge in the future!
Logically speaking, the whole family guards the New Year's Eve together in the main room. Since old Mrs. Chen had always looked down on the second branch's money-wasting things, second branch's girls celebrate on their own. This year, second branch got the addition of Wan Niang. Wan Niang knew how to interact. Old Mrs. Chen and Mrs. Chen family showed her good attitude and let her join them for new year.
Earlier, during dinner, Wan Niang was still a little depressed. Now seeing only herself in the second branch was qualified to stay in the main room for New Year, she couldn't help but feel a little proud. She looked at You Jin with a mocking smile on the corner of her mouth.
But You Jin wasn't a real 12-year-old child. How can she be mad by her antagonizing? After all, the fire pit Yue Family was worthless to her. What was there to be angry about? Naturally, she was too lazy to bother with her. She took the package of snacks that Mrs. Han had secretly given and led younger sisters back to the west wing to new year countdown.
How could Wan Niang know this? She treated it as You Jin being jealous. She turned her face back to the main room and smiled very warmly. Automatically and consciously, she sat behind old Mrs. Chen and obediently massaged her shoulders. It can be said that it was very lackey-behavior.
Old Mrs. Chen liked this. She had asked old Second in private. He said Wan Niang used to be a very honorable maid of an old Madam from a major household. Now that she serves her like this, she felt like she had become an old Madam. However, she still spoke without meaning it: "If you are tired, take a rest. Least that old Second say that I, the mother, don't know how to feel heart ache for you."
Wan Niang sat on her knees behind her with her big belly and kneaded her shoulders with her hand. She sensibly responded: "We, as children, should be filial to our parents. Our second's branch's Elder Sister Su is in bad health. The few children are still young and ignorant. As part of second branch, I should naturally serve more."
Mrs. Han, who was holding her drowsy youngest son, chuckled lightly. This person knew how to put eye drops on the old lady. Fearing that the old lady wouldn't bully the second branch enough. However, she didn't bother to have anything to do with someone like Wan Niang. That's why she didn't say anything.
On New Year, sewing couldn't be done. Nor could one sleep during the night watch. Mrs. Chen was really bored. So she sat on the kang and latched onto Yue You Ting to ask her about Zhou Jun Peng in detail. One bowed her heads shyly and did not speak, while the other nodded contentedly. The atmosphere was very lively.
On the other side of the main room, in front of Yue Da Fu sat the family's men. The father, sons, and grandsons sat together and whispered, "Wen Tao, have you used all the money you took last time? It's spring. It's in time, right?"
The future of the two grandsons had always been a concern for Yue Da Fu. Especially now that he had invested almost all his wealth in. It went without saying, he paid attention to this matter closely even in his dreams.
Yue Chang Fu was also very concerned about this matter. He was fired from the shop this time and had no face to go back to work in the town. He can only pin his hopes on his two sons who took the imperial examination and wait for his two sons to be promising. He'll be old Master enjoying their happiness!
Seeing that Grandfather, Father and two uncles having their bright eyes and anxiously looking at him, Yue Wen Tao nodded confidently: "Grandfather, don't worry. Gentleman Zhou who came a few days ago is a relative of the county magistrate's family. Now all the money is with him. When he left that day, he said that during the Chinese New Year, he would send the money to the magistrate's house and notify magistrate's wife to speak for him, I'm sure there's no problem!"
Hearing what he said, Yue Da Fu affirmatively nodded: "I saw Gentleman Zhou's etiquette that day. Can be trusted. It should be a done deal."
He had a very good impression of Zhou Jun Peng, got a good background and know the etiquette. When Grandson said that he said it, he naturally believed it.
"Which Gentleman Zhou?" Wen Zhou Jun Peng pair came, Yue Chang Fu weren't at home. He missed out.
"He's a classmate of our academy. Brother Zhou is the distant nephew of the magistrate's wife. Brother Liu's family owns a silk and satin shop in the county." Yue Wen Tao answered Yue Chang Fu's question: "This time, we collected money and give it to the magistrate. It was Brother Zhou's idea."
After listening to it, Yue Chang Fu nodded like it dawned in him: "Since he is a relative of the magistrate's family, he must have some real skills. I think this can work!"
The other men in Yue Family also nodded their heads in agreement. All of them looked forward to the new year; wished that it could be spring now and the entry exam begin early.
Chapter 35.Sow discord
For second branch's daughters, New Year wasn't much different from any other day. Because they weren't favored in Yue Family, they won't get lucky money when they kowtow to Yue Da Fu and old Mrs. Chen on New Year. They weren't qualified to join their cousin brothers in kowtowing to pay New Year's greetings to ancestors. On the contrary, they had to boil water and make tea when the men from the clan came to kowtow to Yue Da Fu to give New Year's greetings or when visitors come. They were more busy than before the New Year.
In the kitchen, You Yin fanned the fire vigorously to light the stove, while You Jin turned the spatula vigorously as she flipped vegetables to make stir-fry.
Today was the second day of the new year. It was the day when the married out daughter returns to her maternal home. Mrs. Chen and Mrs. Han left early this morning. Only Mrs. Su and Wan Niang didn't have their maternal home to return to. So they stayed at home.
In the main room, Wan Niang sat on the lower end with a big belly. She jollily accompanied their charming guest, Yue Chang Hong: "It's such a cold day. It must have be tough on Eldest Sister to make way here."
Yue Chang Hong loved to be flattered. Although she had only met Wan Niang twice, she didn't really hate her. On the contrary, she enjoyed her flattery. She beamingly replied, "It's just a few bit of roads. It's fine."
"What's wrong with Liu'er? How come she has a black face as soon as she enters the door?" Old Mrs. Chen looked at her granddaughter's unhappy face and felt a little unhappy in her heart: "On such a festive season, got to pay attention!"
From the start, Ge Liu-er was in a bad mood. Now being told off by old Mrs. Chen, she was even more displeased. She put on her shoes and went outside; leaving only Yue Chang Hong to embarrassedly explain to old Mrs. Chen: "Isn't Liu-er fourteen this year? Earlier, during the year end, her grandmother mentioned a family to us; saying that family had dozens of acres of land. That younger generation grew upright and is hardworking. He's currently working for his uncle, who runs a shop in the town!"
"Isn't this a wonderful news? What's there to be unhappy about?" Wan Niang didn't know Zhou Jun Peng's visit during the year end and naturally felt that Ge Liu-er was well suited to such conditions.
However old Mrs. Chen understood the reason as soon as she heard it. She sighed heavily and said, "This child has ambition!"
In fact, how could old Mrs. Chen not want Ge Liu-er to be able to marry Gentleman Zhou? But there was no movement on Gentleman Zhou. Maybe he didn't like Liu'er. Wouldn't it be a sin for Liu-er to this good marriage for him?
"Mother, I don't know what to do. That child was so angry that she refused to kowtow to her grandmother on New Year's eve. She is still angry today!" Yue Chang Hong was at wit's end by her spoiled daughter's tantrum. Seeing that there were only old Mrs. Chen and Wan Niang in the main room now, she lamented and asked old Mrs. Chen for advice.
What can old Mrs. Chen do? Reaching out her hand, she poked her daughter's forehead. Wishing that iron could be steel, she spoke: "Really? A big matter like marriage had always been decided by parents' and matchmaker's words since ancient times. If you husband and wife think that this younger generation is suitable, you can finalized the engagement. It can't be that you still want to go to the county city and tie Gentleman Zhou over to marry her?"
"I'm just afraid that Liu'er can't think it through!" Yue Chang Hong knew Ge Liu-er's temperament: "She's like this since young. If she doesn't get her way, there will be trouble!"
The mother and daughter were silent for a while. Wan Niang, who was on the side, grasped the underlying story. It turned out that Ge Liu-er had a crush on Gentleman Zhou, who visited during the year end. Now she refused to set her eyes on other! The cogs in her mind turned and suggested an idea to Yue Chang Hong: "Eldest Sister, Liu-er is just a little girl. How can she know what it good? Since this younger generation is good, it is better to take Liu-er to the town while the market is on and have a look. Maybe she will nod her head?"
When Yue Chang Hong heard this, she felt that it made sense and clapped her hands at once: "Yes! I'll take Liu-er to the town in two days!"
The three people in the room chatted away. They didn't notice Ge Liu-er, who was outside the door. She had heard everything they said just now.
After lunch, Ge Liu-er made up an excuse and went from the main room to the room where Wan Niang lived in the west wing. Slightly drowsy Wan Niang saw her coming. Although she didn't know what was going on, she got up with a smile and greeted her: "Liu-er is here."
Ge Liu-er unreservedly sat on the kang. Her round eyes were filled with disgust for Wan Niang: "Why did you give my mother an idea to take me over for a look?"
Wan Niang, who was speculating the situation, didn't expect her to be so direct. For a moment, she didn't come back to her senses: "Ah? What look? Who did you hear it from?"
"You. I was outside the door when you gave my mother this idea." There was some hatred in Ge Liu-er's eyes. Why couldn't the people around her understand her? Could it be that she was really going to marry a country man who dig food from the soil? She recalled of the rich wives in silk and satin clothes she saw in the town before. They were so imposing. Then thinking about the ash-covered and soiled faced aunties in the village, Ge Liu-er decided right there and then that she must marry a city gentleman in the future!
Wan Niang found it slightly awkward. She didn't expect to be caught by the person herself. This wasn't evident on her face. Her mind spun and an idea popped up: "Liu-er, let me ask you this. If you don't promise your mother to go have a look, can you marry Gentleman Zhou?"
Not waiting for Liu-er to reply, she continued: "You know in your heart that you only met Zhou Gongzi once. How could you possibly marry him?"
Hearing Wan Niang ripping open her own scars so frankly, Ge Liu-er was about to cry: "All of you look down on me! You all think I deserve to live a lowly life!"
Seeing that she was lying on the kang and started sobbing, Wan Niang softly comforted her: "Liu'er, no matter what, I am also your aunt. Naturally, I would think of the best for you." Moreover, Wan Niang also had the heart to climb high. How can she not understand this? She suggested: "If you really want to marry Gentleman Zhou, I have an idea..."
As soon as she heard that she had an idea, Ge Liu-er immediately wiped away her tears and looked straight at her: "What's your idea?"
She had already regarded Wan Niang as her last life-saving straw.
"First, promise your mother to have a look. Then beg her to let you stay at your third uncle's house in the county city for a few days. Find a chance to meet Gentleman Zhou and cultivate a good relationship. If it's doesn't work, we, women, will always have some assets."
With a purposeful gaze, she eyed Ge Liu-er's well-developed chest: "Sometimes, a man would give you his life at the hook of your finger as long as you use the right method. Let's not mention a good thing like marrying you into the family?"
Ge Liu-er was a little embarrassed by her blatant eyes. But when she heard that she could marry Gentleman Zhou, her heart was full of joy. She even changed the way she addressed Wan Niang: "Second Aunt, is what you say true?"
Wan Niang smilingly nodded: "Of course I won't lie to you."
She was very satisfied about winning over the heart of another relevant member of Yue Family. Only when the more people on her side, the sooner and more stable she can become the proper daughter-in-law of second branch. Not a disgraceful equal wife.
Ge Liu-er also had no other ideas. She felt what Wan Niang said had some truth. So she nodded, thanked Wan Niang, and left the west wing satisfied.
You Yin, who came back from the outside, noticed Ge Liu-er's eyes were red but had a grin as she came out of Wan Niang's room. She timidly greeted, "Elder Cousin Sister."
Ge Liu-er glanced at her with some disgust. She was really a poor country girl who had never seen the world! Ignoring her, she just walked away.
You Yin thoughtfully looked at the tightly closed door of the lower room in the west wing. She couldn't figure out why would Ge Liu-er and Wan Niang get together. She didn't bother to think about it.
Back to Ge Liu-er. After returning from Yue Family, when Yue Chang Hong tested out the idea of taking her to the town. Ge Liu-er knew what was up and nodded in agreement. The mother and daughter began to plan for this doomed matchmaking trip with different thoughts.
The Spring Festival was over soon. In a blink of an eye, it was time for Wan Niang to go to labor.
On the second day of February, it was Dragon Raises Head Day.
After coming out of the main room in the afternoon, Wan Niang had yet to return to the west wing. when she let out a cry. Her face paled in pain. It turned out to be delivery due day.
Since this was his long-awaited son, Yue Chang Lu was naturally the most concerned. He hurriedly helped her back to the west wing. Then he hurriedly drove the ox cart to the next village to invite the Granny Wen.
But not long after Yue Chang Lu set off, Mrs. Su, who was only about a month away from delivery due date, also got contractions. You Jin panicked when seeing Mrs. Su lying on the kang with her teeth gritted: "Mother! How are you?"
Mrs. Su was used to giving birth. She naturally knew that she was going into labor ahead of time. Her pale face showed a weak smile: "I'm fine. Quickly take your sisters out. Don't scare them."
Only then did You Jin notice panic and fear in the eyes of several younger sisters. Especially the two youngest sisters, they were about to cry. She hurriedly ushered everyone out of the west wing: "You Yin, You Zhu, you two, go to the stove and boil some hot water. You Bao keep a good eye on the three younger sisters. Don't let them run around."
Although the children were flustered, they all listened to You Jin's words. They busied away despite the fear in their hearts.
Old Mrs. Chen, who was sitting on the kang in the main room, heard the chaos outside. She put on her shoes and came out to find out that both of them were in labor. She blasted an earful at You Yin sisters who were busy boiling water: "What's the use? It got to be another two money-wasting things! Still wasting this old lady's firewood!"
You Jin can't care about anything else. She knew Mrs. Su's pregnancy wasn't good and her health was very poor. She had to go and invite Doctor Ma. If Mrs. Su can't get through this, then everything will lose hope.
As soon as Doctor Ma heard that Mrs. Su had gone to labor early, he hurried to fetch the medicine box. Even Doctor Ma's wife, Mrs. Lin packed up when she heard that Granny Wen hadn't arrived yet and followed: "I had helped with delivery in the earlier years. It'll do some good to have help."
You Jin gratefully knelt down and kowtowed heavily to the two of them: "Grandpa Ma and Granny Ma did our family a huge favor. I will definitely repay you two elders in the future!"
Mr.s Lin hurriedly helped her up: "You child. Do you still need to be polite? Let's go and quickly check your mother!" Mrs. Su was pregnant with twins. On top of that, it was premature birth. It might get dangerous.
You Jin nodded and led the two to Yue's house.
