On one stormy night
It had been almost a month since Scully had moved back to the unremarkable house lost somewhere in the countryside. So many things had happened since she left, with her heart heavy with sadness for leaving her soulmate behind. Destiny and providence, however, made it possible for them to find their way back to each other, in the healing process that followed.
Reconciling, finding William, learning about his true origin, unravelling a terrible plan to spread a mortal virus in the world and destroying the evil man behind it. Now, the sequence of events that took place once they agreed to return to the FBI was finally over; and it ended up in the most surprising and unexpected way for the now ex-agents, who decided to give their leap of faith forward together and allow themselves to experience the joy and peace they had finally seemed to reach.
It was past 6 PM and the night had already fallen on Earth, with the rumbling noise of thunders resounding closer each minute. The rain didn't take long to fall, along with lighting crossing the dark sky. Nevertheless, the weather outside did not disturb Scully from her secret contemplation in front of the bathroom mirror. She finished showering, dried herself and now she stood analysing her image, turning from one side to another, in awe with what she could see.
But then the lights went out on the following second, causing her to heave a frustrated sigh.
"I'll get some candles, Scully!" She heard Mulder saying from somewhere inside the house.
Even in the darkness, Scully managed to put on her underwear and a fluffy warm robe, tying it around her waist. Then, she run a towel a few times in her damp hair, combing it with her fingers so it didn't tangle too much. A minute later she heard Mulder's voice again.
"Now this is romantic!" He joked, placing one candle on the chest of drawers and holding another one in his hand. He was about to offer it to her when she opened the bathroom door, and at first Mulder didn't notice the expression on her face.
"Every time it happens it's like going on a time travel and back to the prehistoric age, Scully. Being out in the wild with just fire to face the wrath of ancient gods revolving in the sky!" The tone of his voice was an amused one.
He watched as she gave a few steps and stood right in front of him. The flickering candle light caused her eyes to sparkle like two blue stars in the middle of the night and they were staring right back at him.
"Mulder…There's…There's something I want to you to see…" There was a mix of anxiety and anticipation in her voice.
Smiling, maybe due to the simple fact that his Scully was there with him and it made him immensely happy, he gave a small nod. "Sure, what is it?"
Scully licked her lips and lowered her head for a moment and Mulder saw that she undid the knot in front of her robe and on the following second opened it completely, turning to look at him once again.
Slowly, his lips turned into a broad grin as she contemplated her body, now covered only with her underwear.
"Oh, Scully…I'm having a wonderful sensation of déjà vu…" He said, his eyes traveling down her silhouette and back at her face, only now noticing a certain expectation in her gaze.
Without words, she turned her eyes down and then back at him, as if she was pointing something. He followed her lead and looked down again, and the light of the candle that was still in his hand made it possible for him to finally see what she was trying to show.
The look in his eyes softened and he knelt in front of her, his face just inches from her belly, where a slight bump was now visible. His grin became even wider as he covered the spot with the palm of his free hand – his touch was careful and warm, as if he was touching something holy, nearly sacred.
"…only I guess this isn't a mosquito bite!" He was looking back at her with infinite love.
A moved smile graced her face as she returned his gaze, "No, it isn't…" She replied, tears already forming in the corner of her eyes.
Mulder turned to look at her belly again, and placing the candle on the floor, he wrapped both arms around her waist, bringing her even closer to him. Then, he pressed his forehead against the small area where the evidence of their love now rested.
So many times they shared that same gesture, with foreheads pressed together as a way to soothe their hearts. He seemed to be doing it again but now with the little one that was now growing in her womb. Mulder felt her fingers running along his hair, welcoming his caress, and they remained like this for a few moments, undisturbed by the thunderstorm outside.
Mulder finally moved his head and placed a gentle kiss against the spot where their baby stood. Still smiling, he looked up at her, meeting her trembling, nearly crying smile. Then, he stood up a little, sitting on the edge of the bed and pulling her to sit on his lap.
"Knowing that this little one is there is already amazing…But seeing and being able to touch the evidence that our child is real is…I…I can't even find a word to describe it, Scully…" His face was serious now, while his right hand still rested against her belly, and his left arm encircled her waist.
Scully placed the palm of her hand against his cheek, feeling his five o'clock shadow against her fingertips. "I understand what you mean…I guess none of us will be able to find the right word, Mulder. But the feeling…It's right here…" She moved her hand to lay against his heart.
His hazel eyes bore into her blue ones and he nodded in agreement. "Yeah…It is…"
Both smiled at each other and finally pressed their lips together, Scully's tears rolling down her cheeks. Their kiss was slow and loving, more romantic than passionate, as if it held a bit of the multitude of feelings that brought them together: love, friendship, loyalty, support, admiration. Mulder kissed her cheeks and the tip of her nose, playfully rubbing it against his own.
"I love you, Scully…"
"I know you do, Mulder…" She replied, still crying, but also holding a smile back at him.
Watching as the expression on his face turned into a questioning one, she finally let out a small giggle and placed a tiny kiss on his lips. "I love you too!"
Laughing, he nodded his head. "You know, every time I pictured you disrobing in front of me again, I could never imagine…this…" He said, continuing to run his hand against her belly.
She raised her eyebrows with amusement. "Oh, so you mean that all this time we worked together you kept on imagining me taking my clothes off in front of you?"
With that smug grin that would always pull the strings in her heart, he nodded. "I did! I mean, not the entire time we spent together, as I do love you for all your other uncountable qualities besides your beautiful, sexy body, but…yes, a great amount of time!"
Her eyebrows raised as she feigned surprise but he kept on smiling, pleased to hear his words. "Even if our relationship was based on team work and friendship and we were two people who held a great amount of respect and professionalism for each other?"
"Well, I can't see why I could not imagine you disrobing in front of me while all these other aspects of our relationship remained intact."
Scully narrowed her eyes but the amusement never left her face. "I see…Well, I don't know if you remember, but I've taken my clothes off in front of you before. Many times. Otherwise, this little one wouldn't be here."
With a look of satisfaction, Mulder nodded his head. "Oh, I remember each one of these times, Scully!" He said, with a wink.
"Hum…Good to know that, Mulder!"
"Plus, I am perfectly aware of how she ended up here! I can recount every detail!"
"Oh, 'she'?"
"Or 'he'. It doesn't really matter." He replied, causing her heart to swell with love at the constant reminder that their bond had become even stronger eight weeks before. Mulder ran his thumb against the tiny bump in her stomach and kept on with the playful conversation. "But what I mean is that I kept imagining what would happen if you disrobed in front of me again having this scenario in the background: a stormy night and with candle light replacing the electricity, exactly like how it happened in that motel room all those years ago!"
"I see. Both of us going back to the prehistoric era like you mentioned just now."
He lowered his voice, adding to it a sensual tone. "Yeah, totally out in the wild!"
Saying that, he captured her lips one more time, applying gentle pressure behind her head to hold it still while he savoured that caress, his fingers rubbing her skull through her damp hair.
Nearly melting under his touch, it took a lot of effort for her to pull away briefly, "I'm not going anywhere outside, Mulder." She said against his mouth.
Smiling, he tightened the hold around her. "Oh, no, I don't think it's necessary, Scully." Came his reply, together with a tiny kiss. "Plus, this bed is nice and comfy!" He wiggled his eyebrows causing her to laugh.
"Yes…it is…" She sighed while he kept on placing small kisses against her lips. "…And what did you imagine during all these years of earning for this scene to be replayed, may I ask?"
He pulled away just a few inches and gave a small shrug with his left shoulder, his face still one of enjoyment. "Well…First, it has to do with your robe falling on the floor…" He said, gently pulling the piece of garment that rested precariously on her small shoulders just enough to see it falling a second later.
Then, he happily scanned the curves of her body, admiring every inch and aware that they would change even more on the following months. "Then, even though you look just beautiful in just your underwear, I'd dare to think it also wouldn't last too long in your body…"
Mulder captured her smile with another loving kiss, causing her heart to skip a beat, while he gently reached behind her back to unclasp the black lacy bra she was wearing. The storm outside completely ignored as they melted into one once again, whispered loving words and moans of pleasure filling the bedroom of the unremarkable house under the candlelight.
The end.
