My recent successes as a published author gave me some ideas to improve on this...

I have some better ideas...

One Year before Zoey goes to House of Night

"Gabe Schmidt, Night has chosen thee; thy death will be thy birth. Night calls to thee; hearken to Her sweet voice. Your destiny awaits you at the House of Night!"

Turning to face the sound, having just practically coughed up a lung, Gabe was smacked by a wave of heat that smashed into his forehead with a rawness that left him on his knees... and then it faded, leaving him with a headache, sore lungs and sense of joy. Shaking, he stood up. "I am a vampyre!" he cheered quietly, not wanting to draw attention to himself, even if it was night on a saturday. "I need to go to the House of Night before I die... but I am free, no longer homeless, no longer on the run from Cops and Social Services... I am free!"

He almost sprinted to the House of Night, having known the way there by heart for years. He reached it in an hour, walking into the open gate only to be stopped by a woman, a female Vampyre with delicate vine tattoos on her face. She had soft silky blonde hair and a warmth about her that left him smiling.

"Hello, there, you must be Gabe, we've been expecting you." She said, smiling warmly. "My name is Anastasia Lankford... it is a pleasure to meet you."

"Same, ma'am... I... I hope my attire is okay, I have been homeless for about a month now."

She sighed. "You would not be the first, come with me..." She led him away, towards the beautiful inner sanctum of the House of Night, where he saw a massive statue of Nyx. "Do you know who that is?"

"Nyx?" She raised a brow, curious. "I know a lot about your, my culture now... I guess... I love magic, myths and so on... I always wanted to be a vamp... the power, the emancipation... the idea was what got me through a lot."

"You poor soul..."

"Ma'am... is magic real?" She stopped. "I always wanted to practice, I just... I craved it, the idea of it... I know vamps claim it to be real, but is it?"

She smiled. "I teach Spells and Rituals, so yes, it is."

"Sweet! Can I study it?"

"Yes, technically you can... but I would advise you be very, very careful, magic always comes at a cost."

He sighed this time. "I... I want to learn, if that is okay. I want that safety, and to fulfill my dreams. I swear I'll be careful." What he didn't say was that he had no interest in the next stage of Vampirism, death. So many Fledgling died, if he could prevent that, then he could fulfill his dreams of power, freedom and enjoy life for once...

No one could and would stop him...

He would live and he would be free...

One way or another...
