Note before the Authors notes: Hi, This was my first story even before A Mew Life. It was never posted until now because I wasn't sure where to go with it after chapter 8. I had the whole overarching plot figured out but planning a trainer's route throughout the region, like events and interactions and stuff like that was harder than I thought it would be so I stopped writing it and wasn't planning on posting it till now. I might someday come back and plan it out but not right now. Enjoy ~ Future Me.
Author's Notes: Hello everyone! This is my first attempt at a story. Usually I only write for college literature assignments or something similar. I had this prologue written for a while now but was too nervous to post. I would appreciate reviews and criticism, but please keep any harsh negativity to a minimum.
I am only writing this for fun, and as such I will not have a regular chapter schedule or anything like that. I will write when I feel like it, though I am still adamant not to ever abandon this story. If I ever do decide that I cannot complete it then you will be notified in an update and I will probably still get out an impromptu ending if that happens.
Just a heads up, this is not a pokemorph or tf story, but one in the eyes of a pokemon.
At the end of each chapter I might have a fact about my interpretation of how the pokemon universe works. These facts might not have any impact on the story as only Arceus would know some of them. These facts will most likely be non-canon to the actual Pokémon universe but they will be true to my story's universe.
Disclaimer: I don't own or claim to own anything about Pokémon. Pokémon is owned by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc. This fanfiction is only intended for entertainment purposes and will not be monetized in any way.
Prologue
Warmth...
Darkness…
The occupant of an egg gains consciousness for the first time. She couldn't seem to open her eyes due to the warm liquid that surrounded her, so her mind automatically started to focus on her other senses. The sound of her own heartbeat was the only thing warding off the otherwise quiet darkness that surrounded her. She just floats there listening to the strange comforting sound for who knows how long.
She senses the presence of walls sheltering her from whatever might be outside of the only space she has ever known. She reaches a paw out to touch it. Strangely the detail of being entrapped does not make her panic or feel any sense of claustrophobia. She only feels a sense of contentment and calmness as she lets the loud rhythmic sound of her own heart beat slowly lull her back to sleep.
It was the end of the season when trees go bare of their leaves and temperatures start decreasing before the cold season. On this rainy day, two fox-like creatures lay in a cave, sheltering from the weather. Looking nearly identical to each other. These pokemon sport beautiful golden-white fur completely covering their four-legged bodies. At the end of each of their four legs is a paw with somewhat sharp dark-amber claws that are slightly translucent like they are carved from gemstones. A mane of fluffier fur hanging around their necks like a scarf and between their pointy ears also lay a tuft of the same colored fur that trails behind their head. At the end of their lean bodies sprouts no less than nine puffy fox tails each with a fiery-orange color at the tip. Their eyes hold piercing red cat-like pupils with white sclera that quickly turn completely red when they are engaged in a fight. Their faces have a pointed fox-like muzzle and at the points of their muzzles is a black nose which is constantly sniffing for new scents.
The two ninetales lay exhausted around an egg with red spots and a very odd spot that looked like a star near the top. The egg was centered in the middle of their nest made of recently collected and dried fluffy green moss and red leaves.
The last week had been very hectic for the couple, Silver the male and Petal the female ninetales. Their last home was in a small cluster of apple trees where the branches came together to form a roof to protect them from the rain. The spot had no walls and was generally without any hiding places. Pokemon that used the apple trees for food up until the couple moved in were getting mad at them for their lost source of food and were starting to get aggressive. They had decided after learning that they were going to have a kit that they needed to find a home that was less in the open and less hostile towards them. After a week of desperate searching in their forest for a home that would be suitable for raising a child, they had finally found the perfect place.
The cave they had found after much searching was somewhat small in size but it was big enough for their needs. Due to the current presence of two fire foxes the air in the cave was warmed to a degree that other beings, besides other fire pokemon, would call slightly uncomfortable. The entrance was what really made this the perfect place. Also small in size, the entrance of the cave was just small enough that a human or pokemon large enough to pose a threat would have to crawl through. This detail gave the soon to be parents the advantage in combat, if ever needed.
Outside the cave, almost touching it, was a small freshwater creek, along with the obvious plus of having water so close, it also had a little bit to the effect of covering up their scent. Past the stream on the opposite side of the cave is a small clearing surrounded by the same maple trees that filled the rest of the forest. In the center of the clearing was a large brownish-gray boulder, atop this boulder was a big flat spot, where they could sunbathe. Considering how perfect the place was they were both surprised that there was not one indication of any recent previous pokemon staying there. The only scent was so old that they could not tell what it came from. Other than a few somewhat ancient bones of a prey pokemon, the cave was completely clean.
Silver had been able to make the nest, stockpile meat, composed of magikarp and rattatas, and assorted berries to last a few days just before the egg had been laid.
"Cutting the preparations quite close, are we?" The exhausted ninetales named Petal said.
"Yeah you'd think that after 20 years of waiting for this moment, we would have been ready." Silver said exasperatedly. "Petal, do you think we are ready for this responsibility, to be able to care for a kit?"
Petal sighed, wrapping her tails around her and her mate then said "I am sure every parent is just as nervous as we are when they start, don't worry, if we really aren't cut out to be parents then the clan is only a day's run away." Petal said, trying to reassure him. "Plus we had such a great time together helping take care of hatchlings in the clan."
"Yes, but the mothers would take care of the youngest themselves, we only played with the older kits. We will have to tend to our kit's every need until they get older."
The clan is a group of ninetales and vulpix, probably the largest group of their species in the world in fact. Ninetales tend to group up and stay with their families due to how long they live compared to other species of pokemon. A ninetale's life can be pretty lonely and sad if they live away from other ninetales.
Both Silver and Petal were born and raised in the clan. Silver was born when Petal was in her 7th year and they have played and worked together ever since. Everyone in the clan knew they loved each other and considered them a couple even when they couldn't officially be one yet. They would frequently disappear together, spending time together even when on work duty. They still had to wait until Silver's 30th year to officially be paired by the eldest ninetales as per clan rules.
Like some other couples of ninetales they decided to live outside of the clan in the same forest. The strict rules they had to abide by all the time was getting on their nerves, as they could barely find time to see each other. Living alone meant that they only had to work for their own survival, not for the clan's wellbeing, though this meant less safety as well. This actually helped the clan since feeding the ever growing clan was getting harder and harder over the many years. Any clan's people who chose to live away from the clan were still considered to be part of the clan and can go back at any time.
Silver hungrily eyed the pile of meat and berries "I expect you are pretty hungry after delivering our egg, shall I prepare the meal?"
"Can you, I'm starving." She was glad he asked, she would get it on her own but she was so mentally and physically exhausted that she couldn't get up. Even with her stomach gnawing at her painfully she was already falling asleep.
Silver went over to the pile and grabbed a magikarp. Like many fire types they preferred any meat that they ate to be charred, so he started blasting it with his fire. He then split it two-thirds and nudged his mate with his muzzle to wake up the nodding off ninetales. He gave her the bigger portion.
Petal thanked him, and they ate their meal in silence. The meal preparations took ten minutes and to her that was way too long. Petal scarfed her meal down as fast as possible the moment it was moved in front of her. Silver ate at a normal pace watching her with amusement as Petal almost choked for a second time. After the meal they curled up around the egg again, sleep taking them as fast as it possibly could from their exhausting day.
The next day was far less exciting then the previous had been, Petal was still exhausted and stayed in the nest as she would be for the next few days. Silver kept her company taking care of her every need, cuddling, grooming, and talking to her for the whole day only stopping to get water and food.
Silver was just explaining the shape of a beautiful red flower he found in the forest that day, when he saw Petal was not entirely with the conversation. Instead she was staring unblinkingly at the egg. "Is something wrong?" He asked with worry evident in his voice.
Petal blinked and looked at Silver. "No, nothing's wrong. I was just thinking about the unusual star on our egg." She looked back to the star.
This being the third time this particular conversation was brought up, Silver stated his thoughts on the matter for a third time half-heartedly. "I still think it is just a coincidence that one of the many dots happened to look like a star."
Petal just would not stop trying to convince her love of her point. "No Silver, I highly doubt it is a coincidence that it looks like a star. Not one other egg we have seen in the clan nursery for the 30 years we had been there had ever had a dot resembling anything other than a circle or oval." Petal got up and stretched, aching from the last 24 hours she had stayed in one place and got some water at the entrance of the cave. When she was walking back she muttered "Though I only think it means good fortune or destiny for our kit, I hope at least."
Silver did acknowledge, even if he wouldn't admit it, that it was weird that the star was so perfect. Completely symmetrical, the star had five points that weren't rounded like the other shapes but sharp. The star had always seemed to shine in a weird non-obvious way and had grabbed his attention out of nowhere, multiple times.
After a few days of Petal resting in the cave with an overprotective mate taking care of her every need, which she thought was quite sweet, she finally felt rested enough to be active. This didn't matter much since it was her duty to protect their egg while Silver went to restock the food pile to last until the egg hatched. It was surprisingly sunny, so Silver allowed her a break from the cave while she sunbathed.
Only when Silver returned in the late evening and they started chatting like usual did something strange happen. Petal was laying around the egg talking when suddenly the egg shook, causing her to imminently freeze and stop talking, whipping her head around to look at the egg. Silver suddenly notices the silence that enveloped the cave and asks "What's wrong?" Looking toward his mate and the egg.
"I thought I felt the egg shake, which can't be right since it's not due for a few days." She said, still fully focused on watching the egg, looking for any indication of what she felt was real.
It shakes a second time. Silver, seeing this second shake, opened his eyes in worry, thinking their kit wasn't ready to come out yet. It shakes a third time and with this a crack appears in the shell, for better or for worse the egg was hatching early. The couple gets up and ready themselves to welcome their new kit into the world.
Prologue End.
Fact of the chapter.
All pokemon seem to be able to understand each other when they speak, even though each different species says different things out loud. The reason for this is that when a pokemon speaks they also emit a high pitched sound from their throats that is impossible to hear by human ears and makes no sense to human listening devices. This sound corresponds to what the pokemon wants to say even down to the tone of their voice. Any other pokemon will be able to understand this sound like it was a person speaking words. This is because in their ears there is a section that picks up on these sounds automatically. Pokemon themselves know nothing of this part of their biology, assuming they can just understand each other from the pokemon speech. Even after just hatching from an egg, pokemon seem to be able to communicate to other pokemon, this is due to the fact that both pokemon language and the understanding of simple concepts is instinctual. This is to help with survival, even if the newborn is without parents they can communicate and possibly get help from other pokemon.
Author's notes: I know this prologue was short, the future chapters will be way longer. Anyways, thank You all for reading the first part of what I hope to be a long story, I hope you enjoyed it.
