Chapter 3 – The Hunt

Oliver woke up early the next day after a lousy night of sleep, were he felt like he had none. He went for a quick run and ended up at the bunker, training by himself. He tried not to think about the dream he had the previous night, the really vivid dream, but it was impossible. He had no idea what that was, he didn't do feelings so well and the only thing he was sure of, was the he was dying to find out if her lips tasted as good as they did in his dream.

He was deeply attracted to her.

He took his shirt off and started his daily training routine for a few hours.

He knew he was feeling really frustrated and the poor dummy paid the price. He took a look at the thing he accidentally broke in half on the floor, deciding he would buy a new one later. He threw its 2 pieces on the trash and went to the bathroom to wash his face.

- What did the poor thing did to you?

He heard her voice and stared at her. She was in her Supergirl suit with her arms crossed and that smile he liked so much on her face. This wasn't going to be easy, he just knew it.

- I was practicing a few new moves, it couldn't handle.

- You have to teach me them, I can handle it!

Kara noticed what she said and felt her cheeks burning as she stared awkwardly to her feet.

- I mean… - She said – I won't break in half

- I know – He said and they both stared at each other, in silence.

Kara walked pass him and took off her cape, putting it on the chair. She walked towards the kryptonite sensors to turn them on. She had her back to him and Oliver noticed how her back muscles were perfectly contoured in her suit. His stare followed to her waist and he quickly stared at the ground, trying to keep focused on their training they were about to start, apparently. He wasn't protesting it.

She kept walking around, seeing the different types of arrow he had, her eyes full of curiosity and excitement.

- I have a feeling they aren't regular arrows… - She said

- And you're right, they're not. – Oliver approached the table where his arrow display was.

- What can they do?

Oliver started explaining the different types of trick arrows he had and he couldn't help but noticing she was fascinated by it all. She stepped closer to where his bow was and gave him a brief smile with something that looked way to similar to puppy eyes.

- Can you teach me? How to use it?

Oliver took a look at her, noticing she was really excited to learn. How could he say no?

"Damn it!", he thought as he grabbed his bow, one arrow and mentioned with his head for her to follow him.

- Hold this – He said as he gave her the bow and helped her adjust the arrow on it.

He stood behind her, taking a slow step forward with his chest pressuring on her back. He helped her hold the bow, and his other hand guided her hand that held the arrow.

- Someone told me once that the secret was not to think, just feel.

He said in a low voice, his hand guiding her all the way.

- See your target.

Kara nodded slowly with her head as she focused on the target board on the wall across the room. She felt Oliver's hand guiding her to pull the string with the arrow slowly backwards and hear his voice near her ear as the air felt really thick.

- Feel the variation of the wind around you.

Kara closed her eyes, feeling her surroundings. She was really good at doing that cause to fly was the exact same thing. She would float high in the sky, taking a look at the entire city around her, feeling the wind touching her face. She just remembered the sensation and how good and at peace she felt.

- Fell the strings tighten – He said as he stared down at her – And let go.

She opened her eyes and shot, the arrow going straight to the center of the target. She lowered the bow and turned to stare at Oliver just a few centimeters from her.

- You're a natural – He said, getting a brief smile from her.

Kara stared down at the bow still in her hand; she gave it to Oliver and stared deeply into his eyes.

- I have a damn good teacher. And it's just like flying.

Oliver reached for Kara's hand holding his bow and he felt a rush through his veins he couldn't explain.

- And how is it?

He felt like their eyes were locked into each other's. Kara lowered her hands, remembering the best feeling she has ever had in her life, she felt when she was flying.

- Its liberating, like nothing I've ever felt before. The sensation of the wind from up there – She briefly closed her eyes and smiling, remembering the sensation.

Oliver kept looking at her in awe. She had this calm and bright look in her face that was contagious. She opened her eyes.

- It's my favorite thing ever.

- That's really nice. – He said taking a few steps backwards, offering her the bow one more time – Let's go again.

Oliver just stared this time as Kara kept practicing. He started throwing a few tennis balls on the air for her to hit and she just missed one. After a while, they resumed they hand on hand combat training and Oliver noticed how faster and better she was. She managed to avoid a few of his attacks way more than the night before, and in a fast movement, she trapped him against the wall but he escaped fast. They kept attacking each other, both of them focused and staring serious at each other, both panting and covered in sweat. Oliver reached for her waist in a fast move, knocking her on the floor. She smiled defiantly at him. Oliver reached for her hand to help her up but Kara took advantaged of it and pulled him down with her, rolling fast, making him stop with his chest to the ground. She fell above him, one leg on each side of his waist, stopping from moving as her hands held his arms down on the floor. Oliver took a deep breath, using all of his strength to make her lose her balance and managing to turn them around, but Kara was faster am jumped backwards, and Oliver stood up fast. They kept trying multiple punches, high kicks, twirls.

Diggle came down the stairs at the bunker, hearing fighting noises and rushed just to see Oliver and Kara on the floor, their faces inches from each other, both panting like they just ran a marathon. Diggle lowered his head, trying to hide the expression on his face when Kara and Oliver noticed him and got up soon.

- You're progressing fast – Oliver told her as he walked to the table and grabbed a bottle of water, offering Kara another.

- Thanks. – She smiled – I need to go take care of a few things for Miss Grant now before she rips my head off over the phone… Yes, she can do it. – She laughed.

- I see you later – Oliver said as Kara flew away.

He turned to stare at Diggle, already knowing what he was going to say.

- Don't even start…

- What? I didn't say anything… - He laughed

- But you were about to…

- I just think is nice man… You seem… chill… Kara's presence here is doing you some good… Just saying.

Oliver kept quiet and took his father's book once again, taking a look at all the names left to cross from that list. Even if he indeed felt like the world wasn't entire on his shoulders, he still had a mission to complete. He got to the computer, trying to find more information about the next name: Frank Bertinelli when he got a message from his mother, to meet her at Queen Consolidated. He sighed and told her he was on his way.

- My mom wants to talk…

- Do you think she will ever let go of the idea of you working on Queen Consolidated?

- I don't think so… But I have a plan now. It's time for her to know about it.

Oliver knew his mother's plan. She wanted him to step up and take a job at the company, he didn't want that. He would never be able to do what he did being a business man, having boring meetings and needing to explain all the time where he went and what was he doing.

After a long boring morning, Oliver felt he finally go through his mother and at least for now, he knew she wouldn't pressure him anymore. Diggle stood by his side as they walked out of the company and Moira stopped to talk to some guy Oliver couldn't remember.

"One problem solved", he nodded at Diggle in silence.

- Please tell Frank I sent my regards – Moira said as she hugged the man she was talking to when they saw a motorcycle coming at their direction and the driver took a gun and aimed at them

Oliver was caught by surprise when his mom fell on the ground, shot. He rushed to check on her and Diggle acted quickly, taking his phone out of his pocket.

- Call 911 – Oliver shouted and started to run as fast as he could.

He ended up losing sight of the shooter and stopped running, taking his breath as he looked around. He was pissed.

He knew he wasn't going to get answers so fast, so he rushed to the hospital after seeing a message from Diggle, telling him his mother got admitted and she was stable, recovering. As soon as he got there, he met Thea's furious eyes as she rushed towards him, punching his shoulders.

- WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?!

- Thea, calm…

- DON'T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN! Mom was shot! You left her alone on the street to run after the shooter? REALLY?

- I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking…

- You never think, Ollie! – Thea said – You're lucky she is fine now! I'm taking her to Coast City for a few days, as soon as she gets discharged… And you're not invited! – Thea said as she sat back on the chair of the waiting room.

Oliver knew nothing he could say to his sister was going to matter and he knew deep down she was right. What was he thinking? He didn't have super speed like Kara, he would never get to the shooter in time.

- Oliver? Hi… I've heard what happened, is everything ok? How's your mom?

Oliver lifted his head and saw Kara standing in front of him, deeply worried. She acted impulsively, giving him a brief hug and he accepted it, unconsciously. He wasn't actually a hugger but right now, he didn't care.

- She's fine now, but my sister is furious at me… I left my mom on the street and ran after the shooter…

Kara mentioned for him to follow her away from Thea so they could talk.

- After I heard what happened, I flew around the region… I think I saw the shooter. At least I saw someone in a motorcycle, a gun inside their jacket and the person was really in a hurry.

- Did you see who he was?

- Yes. And it's actually a she. It's a woman. Brunette, blue eyes, she had this look of rage on her face. I was going after her but I hear screams, it looked serious so I went to help and ended up losing her from my sight, I'm sorry.

- Its ok, you did great – Oliver smiled at her – We need to find out who is she.

- I can draw her… in super speed and we can use facial recognition.

Oliver acted on instinct giving a hug on Kara. Diggle stood up a bit far away and Oliver could tell he had a funny smirk on his face, but that was not the time to think about that.

Oliver and Thea spoke with the doctors and they let him know that Moira was going to be ok and discharged by the end of the day. Oliver and Kara went to the bunker, since there was nothing else to do at the hospital but wait. This way, he could at least find out more about the woman who shot his mother and why she did it.

Kara wasn't joking when she said she could draw super fast because in a matter of seconds she had the image of the shooter. Diggle just stared at her, trying to wrap his head around it.

- The man talking to your mom was an associate of Frank Bertinelli. I got some information when I was doing my investigation – Diggle looked at Oliver – There's a war going on now between him and the Triad, apparently they have been blaming one another for attacks both sides are getting, but I'm not sure that's what's happening here.

- Thanks Dig – Oliver said as he took a look at a few papers Diggle gave him. – And it looks like we have the identity of the shooter… Helena Bertinelly? – He stared at the screen, surprised.

- His daughter? – Diggle asked – Why the hell would she do this?

- That's what we need to find out… - Kara said – Ok, so what's next?

- We go after Bertinelli… - Oliver said – Because he's on my father's list.

Diggle stared at Oliver, knowing what that meant. Kara kept staring confused at the two of them.

- List? What… list?

- Remember when I told you that there was a few things about me that I wasn't ready to talk about yet? – Oliver said

Kara nodded with her head. She have been feeling curious about it but decided not to push it. She knew pretty well it wasn't easy to be vulnerable and open up, to trust someone fully with your deepest secrets and she knew if Oliver ever felt like it, he would tell her. Diggle excused himself to give them some space. He already knew at least part of the story and he was sure they needed some privacy to talk; it wasn't exactly an easy subject for Oliver to deal. Something told him that now he was going to be just fine.

Oliver knew there was not going back now. Kara was deeply involved now since he was training her and she started to help them in a few missions while she was in town. He decided it was time for her to know more about him. He was finally ready to open up because something told him he could trust her with his life, and he decided to just follow his instincts, he had not much to lose anyways.

- After the Queen's Gambit went down, My dad, a member of the crew and I found a raft. There was not enough food or water for all of us, so my dad shot the guy, told me he wasn't the man I thought he was and that the city was dying. There was so many bad things he had done and that I needed to survive, to right his wrongs. He shot himself right there, in front of me after he gave me this.

Kara listened to it in horror. She knew how it felt to lose people you love, but she couldn't even try to imagine seeing one of her parents doing something like that in front of her. It must has been really traumatic. He gave her a small book and she took a look at it.

- There's a bunch of names… - She said – Who are those people?

- They are people… Criminals, who my father worked it. Really bad people that still do awful things and they need to be stopped. The justice system here is failing; they can't do what's necessary. But I can. I have been targeting them, one by one.

- Some of these people…

- I killed.

There was a moment of silence in the room as Kara kept reading all of those names.

- When I recruited Diggle to join me, he helped me see that I didn't need to be the killer that people thought I was. That's when I found another way, but I still do what's necessary to get results. I learned archery on the Island, along with a bunch of other things I'm not proud of… - He paused, staring at the ceiling.

This was harder than he thought.

- I've seen things…

Kara noticed Oliver's pain on his eyes. She took a few steps closer to him, a few of her fingers slightly touching the palm of his hand. She knew there was nothing she could say to him that would make it any easier because it was all recent. She remember how it was like when she woke up in the Phantom Zone and saw her pod coming to Earth, after realizing her planet and everyone she loved were gone forever. This kind of pain doesn't go away that fast. She felt his fingers reaching back and intertwining with hers.

- I've done things… Things that gives me nightmares.

Flashes of memories of that first year on the island came back to his mind. His breath quickened and Kara could tell he was about to have a panic attack. She squeezed his hand with hers, her free hand reaching for his left cheek as she caressed it slowly, standing a bit closer.

- Oliver, please look at me… - She said and he turned his gaze to hers – You survived. You've been through hell and you survived. It's ok not to be ok all the time, I've been there. You don't have to tell me everything now, it's ok. Its way too recent, don't push yourself to face it if you're not ready. – Her hand slid to his shoulder – You don't need to rush things. – She gave him that smile that was making him feel his hear melt inside.

Oliver felt the heaviness inside his chest vanishing. That was the effect she had on him.

He knew she was talking from experience. He knew she understood, "and God what a relief that she did", he thought. He stared at their hands, still holding each other and it felt so natural, so right.

- I can help you with this shooter, Helena. Will you let me? – She asked

- Thank you – He smiled back at her.

They let their hands go and Kara cleared her throat, blushing.

- Ok, so let's get to work! – She said

They spent some time creating a plan so Oliver could have a nice talk with Frank, find out what was going on with the Triad and why his own daughter wanted to kill him. Oliver sent Diggle a text for him to meet them in the bunker in 2 hours. As soon as Diggle got back, they told him the plan and prepared to put it in motion.

Oliver knew Frank was one of his dad's closest friends, so he was sure this plan would work. He was going to pay him a visit, with Diggle driving them there while Kara would stay outside and only interfere at his signal for any kind of danger. She stood there, hidden using her x-ray vision the moment Oliver knocked on Bertinelli door's and walked in.

- Oliver, how long! – Frank said as he welcomed Oliver in and closed the door behind him. – I'm sorry for your dad.

- Thank you. I appreciate it. – Oliver said, politely as he took a look around- This house is as beautiful as I remember.

He took a look at the stair and saw a tall figure. It was Helena. She smiled, coming down the stairs and looking curiously at Oliver.

- Do you remember my daughter, Helena?

- Vividly – Oliver said as he shook her hand – He stared back at Frank – Listen, I don't want to take too much of your time, so I'll just ask you. Do you think we could have dinner and discuss some business?

Frank looked intrigued at Oliver. Oliver seemed the only one to notice the shift in Helena's posture.

- Queen Consolidated would like to set the deal with that partnership you and my dad were planning… They think is the perfect time for that.

- I'm glad to know it. – Frank said – I'm sorry I can't go, something came up and needs my entire attention but… - He took a look at Helena and smiled – Maybe my daughter could go. I trust her and know you can close the deal.

- I would… love to – Oliver said, not expecting that at all.

Oliver nodded as Frank excused himself to take a phone call. Oliver left room for Helena to follow him as he scratched the back of his ear.

Kara saw that and closed her eyes, hearing what Frank was talking on the phone. She opened her eyes, satisfied with what she heard. She murmured, knowing Oliver was hearing her on the comms.

- He was talking to someone about how his people kept getting killed and how the Triad was behind it. Apparently the Triad killed one of his allies, believing Bertinelli declared war by killing one of the Triad members.

Oliver smiled at Helena, opening the door of the car waiting for them. Diggle drove off and Kara followed up in the sky, using super speed after she heard where they were going to.

- Look at you, taking women to dinner to close deals… I think that's your thing – Kara teased on comms.

Kara reached for the rooftop of a building right next to the restaurant and waited for them to get there and as soon as they left the car, Kara used her x ray vision again. She told her before that she could help but Oliver told her he wanted a chance to talk to Helena, to find her motivations and maybe convince her to stop before it was too late.

Kara hated waiting. And she was sure that's what bothered her.

Oliver sat across Helena and they talked about their families. Helena had a mysterious look in her eyes and she was clearly not happy with the situation.

- I don't think is a good idea to close a deal with my dad – She said

- We know each other for years now, I don't see why not.

- My dad… Is not a good person.

- What happened? – Oliver said, noticing her voice failing.

- Nothing, I'm just trying to spare a dear friend from a lot of trouble.

She gave him a tiny smile. They had dinner, drank a few sips of wine and talked about life, business and fun.

- I confess I wasn't sure about coming here with you… - He said – But I'm glad I did.

- Me too – She said in a more friendly way, relaxing on her seat.

Kara rolled her eyes.

"Really?" she thought and decided not to let it bother her, because there was nothing for Kara to be bothered about in the first place. She noticed a car stopping right next to the restaurant and 4 men stepping out of it. Kara warned Oliver and still nothing of his signal. Kara observed. The men went inside, told everyone else to leave. One of them stared really pissed off at Helena and she smiled, waving at him.

- Hi Salvati!

- Daddy's little girl. I knew it was you.

Oliver kept staring at them, mentally planning his next move as he waited.

- What? What have I done? – Helena asked

- I know you are the one orchestrating this war between your father and the Triad… But this stops now.

- He deserves it! He deserves it for what he did to Michael!

- You noisy boyfriend was messing with danger… We found the laptop, he was going to the feds, so you dad told me to put him down… And I gladly did!

Helena had pure hatred on her eyes. Kara recognized the look. Now it was clear why she as targeting her father: Revenge.

- You idiot, the laptop was mine! I was going to bring it to the feds! Michael didn't deserve to die.

- Yes, he did… And so will you

They guy said and before he could slap Helena on her face, Oliver stopped his hand just in time, punching him in the face. A huge fight broke inside.

And still there was no signal from Oliver. Kara was starting to feel impatient.

- Oliver, where's the signal? I can stop them!

She still had no answer.

She was getting impatient. She was about to wait a bit longer when she saw Oliver was stabbed on his back while he fought Salvati. Another guy was about to shoot them and Kara got really mad, flying in super speed.

She was done waiting.
