Cold. It was a sensation he had become familiar with within recent years. The frost and the horrors humanity had both found, and resorted to, had made it so Midoriya hadn't felt truly warm since before he even arrived in this place. Yet, though he thought he had known what cold felt like, the sensation slowly flooding his body was a chill he had never felt before.

As he lay on the ground, the crimson puddle slowly growing around him, the thought that came to his mind was surprising to even him. Not "who shot me" or "why", it was simply "huh, where'd they get a gun from? Did they make it or keep it since london? And how did they make powder for it?". It was a testament to both his jaded nature, shock, and his overactive mind that these inane curiosites were what went through his head during his passing.

Above him he heard a mad roaring. Weakly he looked over to see them dragging out The Captain towards the waiting crowd. The waiting crowd and the main steam vent from the generator. Realizing what was about to happen, Midoriya weakly tried to pull himself towards them, but even he knew he would be too late. A painful boot landed on his back, driving out a bloody cough from his lungs. Above hum he heard a voice,

"Stay still mutt, if you live long enough now you'll get to see your precious tyrant get what he deserves. Heh, killed by the machine he made us slaves to run. Fitting end eh?" Too weak to speak, Midorya was unable to defend their actions, to explain the necessity and hardship both he and the captain had ordered and faced, to show them that their actions were truly for the greater good.

They locked The Captain into restraints over the manhole and as they reached up to the release lever, he met Midoriya's eyes. He smiled grimly and opened his mouth. The words he spoke were lost to the crowd, but Midorya had seen him say them so many times he recognized them just from his lips. As the steam shot up, Midoriya watched the man he respected most, the man who had taken him under his wing, who had listened and believed him about his past in another world, die in front of him in a cruel and ironic execution that they had never had the courage to use themselves.

The strength left him. The will to hold on was gone. As he faded into the final dark he muttered a phrase to himself. The same phrase he had said before. The words he had heard spoken and yelled and cried countless times. The final words of The Captain. "The city must survive". Midorya died.

Midoriya opened his eyes.
