Chapter 1

(The Great Valley)

Petrie was beside himself with sadness. He had just seen his uncle Pterano get banished. After watching the far walkers leave the safety of the Great Valley, Petrie simply took off for his nest.

"Hey Petrie. Where are you going?" Asked Littlefoot.

"Home. Me no feel like playing right now. Me sorry Littlefoot. Me just…just..."

Petrie began to trail off his response as his eyes teared up. Littlefoot knew what was wrong and why Petrie no longer wanted to play. He nudged his tiny flyer friend in comfort.

"I understand Petrie. You don't need to explain yourself. Climb up on my back. I'll take you home." Littlefoot then said.

Petrie nods in gratitude and climbs up on to his long-neck friend's back. They said nothing as Littlefoot walked Petrie to his cave. Mama Flyer glided down to scoop her son up. She thanked him for seeing him home safely.

"I just hope Petrie will be okay." Littlefoot said.

"He will be. He just needs some time to accept things." Mama Flyer responded.

"Okay. Goodnight Ms. Flyer."

With that Littlefoot left so Petrie could have his space to process everything that transpired with his dear uncle Pterano, him, and his friends.

(The Mysterious Beyond)

Pterano shivered and trembled. He hated the Mysterious Beyond. Being here invoked too many memories. Not one of them was good. The only good memory it brought was when he and his family welcomed his sister's hatchlings into the world with her mate. Pterano's heart sank thinking of his family. He hadn't been in the Mysterious Beyond for long and he already missed them beyond all comprehension. Pterano sighed sadly. How was he ever going to be able to keep the promise he had made if he was so far from his family; especially being so far from the children? He couldn't let his sadness get to him. Out here it was do or die. Pterano would have to find a way to get through the next five cold seasons on his own. He had to do it for his sister, for her children, for him. Pterano's mind briefly went to a memory he would very much like to forget. However, it was this memory burned forever into Pterano's brain that gave him the drive to continue to search for the perfect life he could give his family. After all, that was what he had promised to do as an uncle and to him. With this in mind,Pterano pulled himself together and took off searching for a place worthy to call home for the next five years.

(The Great Valley)

Petrie sat sadly on a tree branch. Normally, the young Flyer was afraid to perch so high up. However, fear was the last thing on his mind. Petrie stared at the Mysterious Beyond from his perch. He sighed sadly. He wanted his uncle back. Suddenly, an adult female flyer landed beside him. She was blue and wrapped her winged arms around Petrie.

"What's wrong Petrie?" Asked Mama Flyer.

"I miss Uncle Pterano. He promised he'd help me become brave and strong like he is. Me wished Pterano stayed here. Me knows he did bad things but him not all bad. Him save Ducky. Him no mean to hurt anyone." Petrie replied.

His mother sighed.

"I know honey. I understand how you feel. I miss him too."

"You do?"

Mama Flyer nodded.

"Of course. He is my brother after all. Bad as he was, he is still part of my family." She explained.

She nuzzled her son in comfort. Petrie could tell his mother was worried about Pterano as much as he was. She looked back out at the Mysterious Beyond.

"Oh Pterano, please be careful and take care of yourself no matter what. Come home soon. Remember your promise." She said.

(The Mysterious Beyond)

Pterano was flying as fast as he could. He couldn't stay in one place too long. Doing so might attract unwanted attention. He then a loud shriek from the distance. It sent a chill up and down his back. Pterano quickly hid himself in a cavern on a cliff. He trembled when he heard the shriek again. It was closer this time. Then Pterano saw a massive flying sharptooth glide by. He had pitch black wings and a smoke gray body. Fierce teeth like that of a fast biter; and a horrible scar running over a blinded eye. The one remaining eye, however, was opened and it was as orange yellow as the bright circle of life. Pterano shuddered. It was none other than the only Flying Sharptooth in this part of the Mysterious Beyond. Its name was One Eye. Pterano tried to calm his racing heart as panic and fear rose in him. One Eye had flown past him. Clearly, he was unaware of Pterano's existence, which Pterano was glad about. However, it made him wonder who the flying beast was really after. Pterano soon got his answer when he heard the pain shriek of a fellow flyer meeting his or her end at the cruel dagger like talons of One Eye. Pterano shut his eyes and tried to block out the sound of one of his kind dying so horribly. He heard the poor flyer crash with a thud, it's pained cries for help and mercy fading into weak whimpers as it was eaten alive. Finally, there was an ominous silence. Pterano let his tears fall. That flyer could have been anyone he might have known from his past. If not, that flyer had been someone's son, mate, uncle; or maybe even their nephew. Pterano then heard the grief-stricken cries of a female. Looking out from his cave. He saw a female flyer mourning the male One Eye had killed. One Eye laughed as he licked the blood off his beak.

"That's exactly what you get when you try and interfere with my business. Your nephew should have known that by now." He said with a sneer.

Pterano's stomach lurched. The dead flyer looked only a few seasons older than Petrie. What's worse, he was light brown like Petrie too. The grief-stricken aunt was a lighter blue than his sister. This was very hard for Pterano to watch; and yet he couldn't look away. The female flyer glared at the smug One Eye.

"I will kill you for this! Mark my words One Eye! My nephew will get justice!" She hollered.

Suddenly, a black and purple flyer swooped in and tackled the female to the ground.

"Are you stupid!? How dare you talk to the boss like that! Do you want to die too!?" She hissed.

The light blue female flyer wept and shook her head. The other female nodded and crawled off of her.

"Thanks for coming to my rescue Sema; but I can easily off a mouthy weakling like her." One Eye then said.

"Yeah well, I know you don't like fighting right after eating too." Sema replied.

Pterano's eyes widened. Sema was a young adult flyer. She looked and smelled newly matured. Pterano shivered. It seemed the newly matured always took up with oldest and strongest members of their kind. He didn't blame her. Life in the Mysterious Beyond was hard. It was a huge benefit to stay on the good side of creatures like One Eye. No one would hurt you. They wouldn't dare. Especially if a monster like One Eye called you his friend. Pterano hid as One Eye took off for the sky above. Meanwhile, Sema helped the light blue female up to her feet. Pterano then saw One Eyes companion embrace the other female.

"M-my nephew…my nephew is dead…he's dead." She blubbered.

"Ssssssshhhhh, it's okay. I know it hurts." Sema said.

"How can you stand roosting with that monster?"

"Sometimes I ask myself the same thing. Look, One Eye got his vengeance. As far as I know, it was only your nephew he was after. Please take what's left of your family and leave."

"But where shall we go?" Asked the female.

"I don't know; but anyplace is better than here." Sema replied.

Sema then got hit with a new scent. Someone new had entered the Mysterious beyond. Looking up, she saw Pterano shying away from the ledge.

"Look, you better leave before he decides on killing the rest of your flock too. I'm going to make sure he is satisfied." Sema then said.

She then turned to face the rest of the flyers who had gathered to watch the spectacle.

"Well, what are you all staring at? Get out! Shoo! The show is over! Buzz off you damn scavengers!" She said sharply.

The others flew away. Sema then flew up to the cavern Pterano hid himself in.

"What are you doing in my cave?" She asked.

Pterano was startled and began to try and explain himself. However, he only managed to stutter incoherently.

"You don't belong here. This place is dangerous or was what happened just now not enough of a warning?"

Pterano then took a cleansing breath and explained that he was on punishment for trying to take over the Great Valley. Sema's demeanor changed when she hears the words Great Valley.

"Wait, are you telling me that the Great Valley is real?" She then asked.

Pterano nodded.

"Indeed, it is. It's a haven for all creatures who want to live in harmony." He replied.

He then realized he never introduced himself.

"Oh! But where are my manners? I am Pterano." He then said.

"I'm Sema." Sema replied.

"So Pterano, tell me more about the Great Valley."

Pterano grinned and was more than happy to tell her everything he knew. Although he was careful not to give away too much. While he could tell she wasn't evil; she still was one of One Eye's friends. That was something to be very wary of.
