The peace and calm that was covering the land was an addicting, but dull, feeling.
In the years since the great fight between Woody and Tiger ring was long over, the time of peace ensured that he could live peacefully with his wife, Bo Peep, they lived peacefully on a land. Not that long ago, Jessie, a supposed lost sister of Woody, had arrived and was beginning to get to know the place better.
The quiet, unbeknownst to any of them, was about to be shattered when something entered the atmosphere and crashed in a large canyon. A ship bearing the Z logo was hot from the entrance into the earth, forming a crater.
Out came a man dressed clad in a chrome and purple spacesuit with a bubble dome who looked around the tranquility of nature began scanning the parameters.
The scanner beeped, indicating that no life forms were nearby.
"Buzz Lightyear Mission Log: I have arrived on planet M-304 in Sector 3. The planet seems to boast favorable conditions, the environment is far more promising than the reports have stated."
A few more adjustments to his communicator, Buzz did more scanning and another beep was heard.
"The air is breathable, switching off the air supply," he stated as his dome immediately vanished and he took a few sniffs before returning to the communicator.
"Conditions are pristine, no harmful toxins are present in the atmosphere, though the environment is largely unknown."
Buzz paused to look around, seeing only grass and trees. A few birds chirped and the sun shone pleasantly on the area.
"There seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere. I will move towards the northeast sector of this planet's continent until I find lifeforms on my scanners. Buzz Lightyear, out."
Buzz closed the communicator and pressed the red button on his chest, which activated his jetpack and away he flew, his scanner beginning a long-range sweep of the area.
Only a few minutes passed until lifeforms were detected, Buzz landed and checked further into his communicator. Three lifeforms, seemingly larger than standard animal species reported on the planet. Their power combined was smaller than his, so if there was going to be a fight, he was more than ready for it.
"Woody, would you mind getting some more fish? Our supplies are running low."
Woody was peacefully resting in his chair, reading a book when Bo called out from the kitchen. He had no idea what she was cooking, but whatever it was, it smelled good.
"I had planned to do it either after dinner or tomorrow," he called out, returning to his reading.
Bo Peep poked her head from the kitchen and rolled her eyes.
"Right, like when I asked you to cut the grass three weeks ago."
Woody sheepishly sank in his chair, the memory of her literally cutting out a path to the mailbox with a large matchete rose to mind. He had forgotten about it.
Bo Peep walked into the room and lowered his book.
"Think about it this way, honey, if you finish, there'll be a nice dinner waiting for you later and we'll do whatever you want tonight if you finish."
He looked up at her, surprised. He knew she was baiting him, there was no way she was going to want to do that, not with Jessie in the house.
"A-Anything? Even the..."
"Yes, cowboy, we can even pull out the stuff from the back," she laughed, loving how he got so excited about this.
"But, what about Jessie?"
Right, she hadn't thought about that. But she figured Jessie wouldn't mind being alone for a few hours, it was just a horse ride after all.
"I'll let her know and we'll go out together."
"And... and the game?" Woody was now on the verge of standing up, partly because he couldn't contain his excitement, but also that he didn't want Jessie to hear them, they were mainly speaking in whispers.
"You don't want to invite her to join us?"
That question got a forlorn look from Woody.
"But it's special when it's just us. I don't want her to know I still play... that."
"Honey, you grew up playing Cowboys and Bandits, no one's going to blame you for still having that board game to this day."
"Easy for you to say, you're not the one with something embarrassing like that."
Bo just laughed, she loved this man and it was cute how he still held on to his childhood memories, despite everything they went through.
"Alright, fine, we'll play it, just the two of us. Now, will you please go get some more fish?"
"No need to tell me twice," Woody smiled as he bookmarked his book and rose from his chair.
Less than two minutes later, armed with his hat and a fishing pole, Bo gave him a quick peck and wished him luck.
Woody breathed in the fresh air. It was barely early afternoon, but with his fishing pole, he'd have this done before dinner and then they'd do the things she promised they would. Oh, he was excited.
Bullseye seemed to sense Woody's cheerful energy and shared it with him as he had his saddle prepped on and they went off to the lake.
"Ride like the breeze, Bullseye," Woody called, meaning that he wanted his horse to go fast, but not that fast.
What a day today might just turn out to be.
Buzz watched silently as one of the lifeforms left the shelter and was now heading someplace, leaving the other two by themselves.
He didn't want to do anything, but orders were orders, Zurg Command would not accept failure. Buzz looked into his scanner on his communicator, and honed on the two lifeforms. One was conversing with the man before he left while the other was the target he was sent to get, laying down quietly, doing something.
"The question is, how do I go about this...?" Buzz put his hand to his chin, deep in thought. He could go the sneaky route and do a full on kidnapping, but that wasn't his style.
That's more Zurg's, he thought. It was the ugliest, but most effective way to finish this mission. Why Zurg wanted this lifeform, he didn't get, but he wasn't going to ask questions he wasn't supposed to be asking, he was just supposed to get them, plain and simple.
The other option was to knock on the door and ask this lifeform if they'd like to go with him, see the stars and galaxies.
Come with me to meet your inevitable enslavement or demise at the hands of the Evil Emperor, oh yeah, that would totally work.
Buzz sighed, knowing that the sooner and quicker he did this, the easier it would be on him.
Just like ripping off a Band-Aid, don't think about it, just do it, he thought to himself as he sneaked his way over to the house.
The lifeform was said to be at the far side of the house, Buzz knew he could use the knockout gas before they had a chance to yell or fight back. He didn't like it, in fact, he HATED having to do this.
But good soldiers followed orders, Zurg had barked at them.
Good soldiers followed orders.
After making sure he wasn't detected, Buzz went over to the window and peeked in, hoping to get a good look at this lifeform.
What he got instead was the window opening, a move he did not anticipate as he quickly moved over to a corner to be out of sight. Was he detected?
No, he wasn't, he thought as out crawled a beautiful redhead, one of the most beautiful women Buzz had ever seen. Even from his look vantage point in the corner of the house, he stood mesmerized by her beauty.
She looked around before silently closing the window and running out to the stables.
Buzz shook himself out of his daze, he couldn't afford to let his feelings interfere with this mission, Zurg gave him orders and he was going to follow them.
He scanned the girl and it was confirmed, this was the one Zurg wanted.
Now Buzz was even more conflicted, he definitely didn't want this girl to be under the Emperor's sharp thumb, she was too beautiful for that.
A slap across his own face, Buzz reminded himself. The mission, finish the mission.
The girl came out, spitting out some bits of frustration like she was expecting something, but now it wasn't there.
Buzz watched carefully as she put on a jacket and made her way someplace. Now his job would be easier, so long as no other lifeforms would see or hear them, he could easily knock her out and take her to his ship.
With that, Buzz silently began following her.
Trying to keep silent proved to be difficult as she seemed to sense a presence nearby.
Every time she looked back, Buzz was forced to hide. His spacesuit was not built to blend in with this environment, but blast it, it was standard issue in Zurg Command.
Eventually, he managed to get close, but was met with a swift kick to the face.
Jessie stood bewildered at the weird-looking purple spaceman. She knew someone was tailing her, but this was about the last thing she expected.
"Who are ya?!" She barked, instinctively grabbing a stick and pointing it at him.
Buzz groaned and felt his jaw to make sure nothing was broken. If anything, this woman was like a rose, beautiful, but deadly. But there was no way he was telling her that.
Maybe that's why Zurg wanted her?
"Hey! I'm talkin' to ya! Who are you?!" Jessie yelled, her voice leaving a small echo in the woods that surrounded them.
Buzz was speechless, but he had to focus on the mission. He slowly got up and held his hands up, looking at the stick, then at her.
He didn't want to do this, but he quietly set his laser to stun and in one swift movement, he had stunned her and did a leg sweep. He was prepared to apply the gas, but she quickly recovered and moved to fight him.
Buzz hadn't anticipated this and he didn't want to fight her, so he used his martial arts techniques defensively, blocking her every blow and kick. They were almost synchronized with their moves, which made Buzz swoon just a bit in the midst of their fighting.
Eventually, he made the wrong move and she got the upper hand, sweeping him off his feet and holding down his chest with her foot.
"Listen, buddy, we can do this nice or do this rough and I ain't afraid to leave ya out in these woods," Jessie panted, holding her fists out, ready to fight again.
If it wasn't for the mission, Buzz would've allowed himself to fall for her right there and then, but he couldn't. Zurg wanted her alive and he had no choice, but to do as told.
Good soldiers follow orders, he thought bitterly as he quickly sprayed the gas in her face, which made her recoil and try not to breathe it in, but the surprise attack caught her off-guard enough to make her lose consciousness.
Buzz caught her before she could hit the ground and for a few moments, he studied her.
She was even more beautiful up close, he swallowed a lump in his throat and activated his jetpack, heading towards the location of his ship.
He really hated this.
Woody arrived to his favorite fishing spot which was on the side of a large lake. He had plans to build a boat so he could actually go into the middle of it and catch the bigger fish that weren't able to go to shore.
"Nice and quiet, eh, Bullseye?"
Bullseye only snorted in response as he happily munched on some apples that Woody had brought for him. Today was the perfect day for fishing, indeed.
He had set up his fishing pole with some bait and had just begun to fish when he heard someone calling out to him from the woods.
"Woody! Woody!" It was Bo Peep, looking scared and exhausted from having run across the forest.
"Bo? What happened? What's wrong?" Woody held her by her hands when she caught up to him, he knew Bo would never do such a thing unless it was really an emergency. He waited for her to catch her breath, hoping the worst hadn't happened.
"It's... It's Jessie! She's gone... She's-"
She was immediately interrupted by the sound of a something taking off. They both looked over at the far side of the lake and saw a chrome and purple spaceman carrying an unconscious Jessie.
"No.. JESSIE!" Woody cried out and immediately got on his horse.
"RIDE LIKE THE WIND, BULLSEYE!"
Bullseye didn't even need to be told once as he immediately began to scale around the lake, hoping to catch up with the airborne spaceman. Bo called out to him to have her come with him too, but she decided it was best to wait and pray he came back with her safely.
It wasn't easy for both of them, the trees blocked the man from view several times, almost making them lose trail. But they eventually made it to where his ship was.
"Come on, Bullseye, full speed ahead!" Woody hushed to Bullseye, who had a full line of sight on Jessie.
He only hoped he could make it on time.
Buzz had barely managed to put the woman into his cockpit when his scanner detected the presence of a lifeform approaching the vicinity.
He turned and, sure enough, there was the man from earlier on his horse. Maybe using the jetpack wasn't the best idea.
Buzz locked the ship and prepared to fight the man coming up to him rapidly, Zurg had made it a point to train his soldiers to never back down from a challenge so that all would know the terror of Zurg's army.
And among the best of the best was Buzz Lightyear himself, no one below him even came close.
"Hold it right there!" The cowboy called out as he jumped off his horse. Buzz only stood at ease, eyeing the stranger for any indication of his power.
"Let her go!" He called out, his face held an angry expression, the likes of which Buzz was familiar with and he was justified in being angry, he was literally kidnapping someone close to him.
"I am Buzz Lightyear, member of the elite within the ranks of Zurg's forces. I am detaining this individual and taking her into custody under the authority of the Evil Emperor!"
Woody blinked, not sure what half of that stuff meant.
"Listen, I don't care where you come from or why you're here, but let Jessie go! NOW!"
Jessie, huh? Buzz pondered on this, but immediately pushed it away, he only needed to showcase his strength and then he'd be out of here.
"I'm afraid I cannot do that, I have orders to bring her in."
"Orders or not, I'm not about to stand here and let you take her away!"
Both stood and looked into each other's eyes. The tension began to thicken as the wind blew between them, lightly howling as it did. Leaves from the trees rustled as the wind picked up, both men stared at each other silently, willing the other to do something.
Eventually, Buzz did as he jumped forward and yelled as he delivered a punch, which Woody dodged and jumped away before jumping back and replying with an elbow to the face, which knocked Buzz off to the side.
He quickly recovered by doing some backflips before landing on his feet. Buzz again felt his jaw that was still sore from the kick Jessie gave him earlier, he needed to be more careful, this was now a weakness.
Woody didn't wait as he jumped ahead to where Buzz was and the two began exchanging blows.
When it seemed like they were evenly matched, one would try to pull a sneak attack, which the other would block or the other would try to attack faster, only for the other to return the favor at the same speed.
Eventually, the two yelled as they each brought a finishing punch and had them connect with each other, causing a large shockwave that created a small crater and caused Bullseye to fall back, not wanting to get hurt.
Both Woody and Buzz stood panting, their fists still connected with each other for a moment before they both jumped back.
This guy was good, Buzz didn't think there would be anyone to match his level of power, especially one from this planet with hardly any warriors. Clearly, further study was required.
Meanwhile, Woody knew he had to save Jessie at any cost, so he began to do what he had done years back and began to raise his power.
Buzz noted this as his scanner beeped, indicating that the lifeform was growing in strength, which was something he had never seen before.
What was he?
Woody let out a grunt as he brought his power to a higher level, not his very best, but at least better than before.
"I'm giving you one last chance, Blightgear-"
"Lightyear."
"-to let Jessie go and I promise you we can walk away and pretend this never happened."
Buzz looked for signs that this man was bluffing, but it didn't matter anyway.
"As I've stated before. I have orders to bring her in and I will not return empty-handed."
Woody smiled and took a deep breath, he really was going to do this the hard way, wasn't he?
"Then, don't blame me for what happens next."
Woody charged ahead with a large shout and Buzz moved to block an oncoming punch, but Woody jumped over him and jumped back with another elbow, catching Buzz completely by surprise with his sudden boost of speed.
Buzz turned around, but before he could recover, Woody jumped forward again with a yell and began to land a barrage of punches on Buzz, who couldn't block them all in time. The barrages ended with a heavy kick upward to send Buzz flying before Woody jumped up and finished with a heavy kick downward, which sent Buzz spiraling towards the ground and landing with a crash, creating a crater and dust flying everywhere.
Woody landed, panting as he got on one knee, trying to catch his breath. He was definitely out of practice, but he hoped that his attack would be enough.
The dust began to settle on the spaceman who was submerged halfway into the earth. He opened an eye and forced himself back up. Woody was astounded, he wasn't expecting this guy to get back up so soon, but he was happy to finally have someone worthy enough to challenge him.
Buzz dusted himself off as he ignored the pain in his torso. He had to hand it to the cowboy, he had underestimated him.
Warning: Major Damage Detected. Applying Horon, his suit chirped as Buzz felt the injection and started to feel a little better. He made a show by stretching, showing this cowboy he wasn't going to go down easily.
"I must say, that attack was impressive," Buzz smirked as he rotated his arm, but inwardly, he was trying to study what this man had done to spike up his strength enough to get the drop on him.
"Hope you're not thinking that's the best I've got," Woody replied with a smirk, playing along in hopes of finding a weak point on Buzz, he was already sensing exhaustion inching across his body. He wouldn't have much left before he passed out, he needed to finish this quickly.
Buzz did his final stretches and made a "come get me" motion with his hands, daring his opponent to come take him on. Woody wasn't always one to take these challenges head-on, but this time, he bit the bullet.
Knowing the same attacks probably wouldn't work twice, Woody instead moved to sweep Buzz's legs, but the space ranger seemed to detect this as he caught Woody's leg and tossed him aside like a ragdoll.
Woody quickly recovered with a hand-spring, but was immediately met with a barrage of chops and kicks, Buzz's martial arts form was now on full display as he easily overpowered Woody by attacking quickly, striking the weak points on his body then finishing with a kick outward.
Woody didn't feel anything, but as soon as he was able to stand his ground, it was like his body began to give out on him.
"H-Hey! Can't.. move..!"
Buzz panted softly, then chuckled.
"There's more than one way to travel and more than one way to handle a problem. And like that, there's more than one way to fight that takes more than swinging wildly, cowboy."
Woody struggled to keep his ground, his body screaming that something was wrong. Buzz walked closer to where the struggling cowboy was, his stride full of confidence as if the battle had already been won.
"I attacked your weak points, your body won't be able to move for another few hours. Consider yourself lucky I have no intention of killing you."
He felt panic rising with every step Buzz took closer to him, he needed to get up, he needed to fight. Jessie was counting on him! Woody managed to stand a few times, but quickly fell down each time. Buzz finally made it and grabbed Woody by the throat, lifting him up easily.
"Face it, cowboy, you've lost," Buzz stated simply, which confused Woody as it seemed more like Buzz didn't want to be saying this.
Buzz tossed Woody behind him, put a foot on his back and grabbed his arms, pulling them backwards.
"O-OW!" Woody yelled out in pain.
"Remember this pain, cowboy!"
Another pull, more yelling by Woody. who tried desperately to break free, but Buzz had him pinned down good. It didn't help that his own body was still trying to process the earlier attack.
This wasn't good.
"Ready to surrender?" Buzz hoped he would have enough sense to back down, but experience taught him that all creatures with warrior's hearts seldom ever gave up.
"No! Never!"
"Then, you leave me no choice!"
More pulling and yelling from Woody, who couldn't remember the last time he felt this helpless. His thoughts immediately began to think about his life, the first time he found Bullseye, met Bo Peep, their wedding, finding Jessie and now this.
This was the end, wasn't it?
When there wasn't a reply, Buzz couldn't bear it any longer, he fought back a tear or two as he moved to finish this torture quickly.
"Remember what happens when you assault the forces of the Evil! Emperor! ZURG!"
With that final yell from Buzz, he pulled harder, which made Woody yell and nearly pass out from all this pain he was feeling at once.
I'm sorry, Jessie... I couldn't...
He was fading, he could feel it. But none of that came close to the realization that he had failed Jessie when she needed him most.
He had failed.
Woody went limp and Buzz felt he had made his point.
He hated this brutality, but this was a requirement as being a part of Zurg's army to instill fear into everyone you met and punishing those who dared to fight back.
This wasn't Buzz's style at all, but he had to do it if he wanted to live.
Right as he was about to let the unconscious cowboy go, his ship began to rattle and shake, until the cockpit broke open and out jumped a figure.
The redhead from before, Buzz thought as he saw Jessie land near them, her eyes filled with fury as she saw Woody unconscious and Buzz holding his arms.
Tears filled her eyes as her anger seemed to grow to the point of boiling. Her energy quickly rose, causing a red aura of energy to radiate from her and the ground to shake on a level Buzz never felt before..
"LEAVE! WOODY! ALONE!" She screamed as she charged forward and landed a heavy blow right across Buzz's face, sending him flying across the field.
Buzz attempted to recover by landing on all fours, but he was quickly grabbed by the waist and launched backwards by Jessie into a suplex, crashing halfway into the ground.
She wasn't finished as she flipped over and began landing a heavy barrage of punches, causing the small crater to grow and grow with each punch. Jessie was hopping mad, screaming as she landed blow after blow, tears falling from her eyes as rocks flew everywhere and dust kicked up with all of the motion.
The whole area around them began to shake, animals were running away from the action, birds had trouble flying with all the shockwaves and Bullseye held onto a tree for dear life.
Eventually, Jessie grabbed his legs and twirled a mostly dazed Buzz around before throwing him up to the sky, then she let out the biggest yell she had ever mustered, willing Buzz to be blasted off the planet, but in her yelling, energy leaped out of her mouth into a beam that glowed with a intense yellow color, lighting up everything around them..
Buzz snapped out of it long enough to hold the energy beam at bay, he was absolutely bewildered and confused at what was going on. The two held their ground, Jessie shooting the beam with Buzz holding it back, any clouds around them seemed to dissipate as if running to get away from this struggle.
But this wouldn't do, he had to die for what he did. HE HAD TO! Jessie let out an even larger blast and quickly climbed up, enveloping Buzz into a sea of energy. His suit gave off several alarms as it fell apart in the energy wave, not able to handle it's intensity which seemed to rival that of the sun's.
In his final seconds of consciousness, Buzz only had one thought.
This is why Zurg wants her.
