At the end of the world, when the oceans had turned red and the corpses of angels littered the landscape, Asuka and Shinji stared at the water. They both crouched as though braced for an action that never became expressed.

"Disgusting," said Asuka. The longer she stared at the red waves, the greater her disgust grew. It oozed into her chest and filled her with bitterness, adrenaline squeezing her lungs and guts. She stood up and turned away from Shinji, who was practically catatonic. "Why?" She demanded. Shinji did not look up. "Why did you do that to me?" A moment passed. No response.

Asuka whirled around, landing a kick on Shinji's shoulder. He toppled over and as he rose from the ground said, "You're right." Asuka raised her eyebrows, caught off guard by his sudden sincerity. "I am disgusting. I'm sorry, Asuka." He kneeled on the ground and prostrated himself. "Can you ever forgive me?" Asuka turned to face the opposite direction again.

"No," she answered, beginning to walk away, "but thanks for the apology."
