Take a Dicey Chance: Paula Symes has one younger son with Down's syndrome after having two later in life daughters b. March 2002 and b. April 2005 and Gerry is the father to Timmy Standing (5th of March 1995) who has two much younger half sisters. This fanfic contains the original cast of Brian Lane, Jack Halford, Sandra Pullman and Gerry Standing. There is one in joke about Gerry's role in "Just Willam" during the 1960s.
The 29 year old man is the spitting image of Gerry Standing and Paula Symes in hair colour just before his began to grey and blue eyes. He enjoys drama, the soaps, a fan of David Jason and reads science fiction avidly and adores The X Files. He has an eye for the ladies just like his father Gerry.
His talent was nurtured by Gerry who tirelessly worked in the police force with bringing up Timmy Standing after his relationship with Paula Symes broke up. He described Timmy as "a blessing", teaching him not to take things for granted and live to enjoy.
Timothy's talent first showed itself at his specialist school, Maze Hill in Greenwich, South-East London, where his ad-libs in plays were legendary. Gerry as a child did lots of acting, appearing in the '60s as William Brown in the BBC's adaptation of the Just William books and later on as a CID detective womanised and party-loving his way through.
"She's been married twice before her two daughters dad, I've been married three times, so I can't see any point," he says to the cameras about old flame Paula Symes when the papers ask about how Timmy Standing came around. Then Paula accused him of being a heavy-drinking wife-beater - an allegation he denied, but which threatened to wreck his former police career, despite a public rebuttal from Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman.
"We are all ex-Old Bill brought back to work on a case," explains Gerry, 64. "There's a lot of stuff about how the police now are so politically correct that they can't arrest anyone. I've worked with Sandra and Brian before and I've known Jack for years. We all gelled straight away." when he is asked about the premise behind UCOS in the London Metropolitan Police.
He last worked with Sandra Pullman years ago when they played the leads undercover of a paedophile ring in 1992, reuniting for UCOS since 2004 "I felt sick and very angry when I read those stories with Paula Symes because that's not Gerry, that's not what he's about." she hits out at Paula's calculating claims "earlier, when working in The Sweeney, he was away a lot. He'd leave at 7.30 in the morning and get back after 10 that night." getting regular feedback from other retired cops.
Quite often we read about a suspect from a rape case who's rearrested and convicted on DNA evidence 22 years later. You hear much more about old crimes being reinvestigated," explained Brian Lane.
"We don't really think of each other as father and daughter any more. She thinks of me as the stupid younger brother," Gerry laughs when talk turns to Emily Driscoll who is his surrogate daughter from another affair.
Meanwhile, Gerry's continued womanising was creating more problems for the family. "Dad had an affair while he and Paula were still married and didn't tell us about it," recalls Emily. "Then one day we opened a newspaper and there it was. It was a shock to learn about it that way. I know it was his fault for not telling us, but I suppose he was so involved with what was going on, he didn't think. When you hear all the revelations that celebrities come out with today, what dad did was pretty tame in comparison. All he did was fall out of bed with Paula Symes."
But more painful revelations were to follow. Paula Symes spoke out, alleging that she was ending her ten-year marriage to Gerry because of his drunkenness and violence towards her. Her disclosures proved the last straw for Emily's mum. For the first time in the 14 years since Gerry had left her, she broke her dignified silence and leapt to her ex-husband's defence.
In 2002, Gerry Standing has lost a great pal and mentor from his first days in London Met's Flying Squad unit which he still hasn't got over years later.
