Eddie stretched her tired limbs as she settled down in bed for the night. It had been a long day on the beat, which included a quick trip to the hospital to make sure her ankle was still intact after twisting it when trying to chase down a perp. Thankfully, she just needed to stay off of it for three to four days and make sure to elevate and ice it whenever she got the chance and it would be as good as new.
She laid back and looked over at her husband's side of the bed, which had gone untouched for a few days now. Jamie was attending a bachelor party of one of his old law school buddies in the Caribbean and was due back home on Sunday. Of course, she missed him and was looking forward to him coming home but it did feel kind of nice to have their big bed all to herself.
She grabbed her phone and scrolled through it for a few minutes before it started ringing with a phone call from her husband.
"Hello?" she answered.
"Hey you," Jamie responded.
"Who is this?" she questioned with a mischievous smile forming on her face.
He let out a small laugh, "You know who it is, Ed."
"Do I? This can't be my husband who's living it up in the Caribbean right now while his poor wife is over here working the days away trying to pay for his trip."
"Oh get out of here," he chuckled. "I'll bring you out here for our next vacation. You'd love it. It's beautiful out here."
"I'm holding you to it," she said. "How are you? You've barely texted me today. I was getting a little worried."
"I know. I'm sorry. Where we were, the signal was terrible. That's why I just waited to call when we got back."
"You guys just fished all day?" she asked.
"Mhmm. We're really living it up over here, Ed," he joked. "A bachelor party every guy dreams about."
"I can tell. And now you're in bed by nine o'clock. You're really showing your age, hon."
"We value our sleep now. And we need it. These forty year old bodies don't function like they should when they don't have enough sleep." She heard him shifting around in bed. "And how are you? Quiet day?"
"It was actually pretty eventful if I'm being honest. We got our first call from the moment we went on air. We arrested a few people, chased down a perp, then," She paused for a moment before continuing, "...ihadtogotothehospitaltogetcheckedout and everything turned out fine. It was all in a days work truly."
"Wait what? You had to go where?" he asked.
She sighed, "I had to go to the hospital."
She heard him take a deep breath on the other end before responding, "What happened?"
"We were heading back to the precinct when we found a suspicious looking guy hanging around the bodega around the corner. We got out of the car and he immediately took off running when he saw us. Badillo went one way and I went the other. I followed him down an alley but tripped in a pothole and twisted my ankle. I tried to get back up but it was hurting really bad. Badillo took me to the hospital to get it checked out. Nothing is broken or torn thankfully but it is swollen so they said that I need to stay off of it for a few days and it'll be as good as new."
Jamie let out a sigh of relief, "Good. Why didn't you call me?"
"Because it wasn't that bad, Jamie. And I knew that we would talk tonight. I'm okay, Bub. I really am."
"Okay," he replied. "As long as you're okay."
"I am," she confirmed. "I have my ankle up on a few pillows and have ice on it too."
"You better. I'm glad you're okay."
"What's the plan for tomorrow? Don't tell me you guys are going fishing again."
"We're going snorkeling in the morning and then going to another good fishing spot in the afternoon."
"Damn. Maybe I should fly over there to show you guys how to really do a bachelor party."
"Ha! That's funny coming from you," Jamie responded. "You would be out like a light by nine o'clock."
"No I wouldn't! I would show you guys a good time. And that reminds me, I did some shopping yesterday and found a cute little number in the lingerie section. It's black and hugs me in all the right places. Unfortunately, you're over there so I can't show it to you." Eddie smiled to herself as she heard a small hitch in Jamie's throat. She loved to mess with him like this, knowing that it would make him miss her a little more and that it would be a good build up to when they reunited on Sunday.
"I know what you're doing and it's definitely working," he said, clearing his throat.
"Good. Just like I planned," she joked.
"Send me a picture?" he asked hopefully.
"That was the plan until I got this swollen ankle. I guess you'll just have to wait until you get back."
"I swear, Ed. I'll fly home right now or I'll get you a ticket on the next flight out here. I'm serious."
Eddie laughed, "It's just a few more days, babe."
"I'm looking up flights for you right now."
"You're crazy. I am not flying out there, Jameson Reagan. Especially with this fat ankle that I have. You enjoy the rest of your trip and I'll see you on Sunday. The wait will be worth it, I promise."
"Okay fine," he relented. "I guess I'll let you go so you can rest. Call me in the morning before you go in. You'll be on desk duty now until your ankle is better, right?"
"Yep. Until next week."
"Good. Get some rest and keep icing that ankle. I love you, Eddie."
She smiled, "I love you too. Goodnight."
"Goodnight hon."
Eddie hung up the phone and placed it on her nightstand then reached over and turned off the lamp so she could go to sleep.
