Adrien sighed as he crumpled another piece of paper into a ball. How did Daddy design such perfect outfits when he sketched? Adrien didn't see him crumpling paper into balls. He slumped in his chair. He just wanted to make a picture of him and Mommy for Mother's Day.
Being an only child and not getting out a lot, sometime Emile Agreste could be Adrien's best friend. Adrien loved how silly and kind she was, and Mommy gave the best hugs. Even if Mommy got headaches a lot, she never gave up.
Last week she had taught Adrien how to bake a little apple pie and he gotten all covered with flour. Adrien had felt embarrassed and angry. "If we don't make mistakes, how will we learn?" Emile asked, wiping him gently until no traces of flour were left.
Recalling his mother's words, Adrien focused hard. He liked using his crayon box his cousin had gotten him for his fifth birthday. You could do anything with crayons and markers if you just used your imagination.
Adrien wasn't sure why, but whenever he colored just before he went to sleep, he would dream of a pretty girl with black hair and a gentle smile. She laughed and skipped, drawing everything in path that came to life.
Someday, I'm going to have a friend that likes coloring and creating, Adrien said. But for now, he was content to draw his family.
He looked up, startled, when Mommy came in, looking pretty with her soft yellow in a braid and her green eyes sparkling. "I was getting worried when you didn't come for breakfast. What have you been up to?" Emile asked, kneeling down by Adrien's little table.
Adrien stood up and held the picture up so his mother could see. "I drew a picture of you and me, Mommy. I know its not perfect….."
Emile shook with silent gentle laughter at the serious look on her son's face. Adrien could get that way: serious one minute, a total goof the next.
"I don't need it to be perfect," Emile said, taking the picture and kissing her son's forehead. "It came from you and you drew it with love." Emile held out her arms and Adrien ran into her safe embrace. She cuddled him in her arms as Adrien lay his head on her shoulder. "Will I ever have a friend that's creative and kind? One that likes colors?" Adrien asked.
"With your caring nature, I'm sure it won't be long at all. But for now, you can draw me pictures whenever you want."
"Happy Mother's Day, Mother. Your the best mother in the world. And thanks for being my friend."
