Chapter 1: End of a Life
Somewhere in Japan, 1997
For years, all Denji had ever wanted was a normal life, three meals a day, a roof over his head, and a girl to call his own. It was a normal life he never had, a life he always wanted. At the moment, he stood still, his mind hazy, his body transformed: two chainsaws protruding from his forearms, a mechanical head with sharp teeth, and a third chainsaw sticking out of his forehead. Denji stood in the middle of a warehouse, covered in the blood of the mutilated zombies that surrounded him.
"My servant, that exists somewhere in this universe!" A faint voice reached out to Denji in a language he's never heard before.
"Huh…" He quietly groaned, his mind still misty. "Who… can't understand," Denji said groggily.
"My divine, beautiful, and powerful familiar!" The foreign voice spoke again. "I wish and assert from the bottom of my heart... Answer my guidance!"
A flash of light appeared in Denji's vision before he was standing in the warehouse, and now he was sitting on a pile of logs with Pochita looking up at him. "Denji…" Pochita said.
"P-Pochita… what was it a dream?" Denji asked with a bit of confusion.
"Another force is attempting to take you away from this world…" Denji looked at the devil dog but couldn't say anything. "You will be sent to another world… one where you can start over… I am giving you a choice."
"What choice?" Denji asked. "What do you mean?"
"I can conceal your devil abilities upon arrival, so you can live a normal life." Pochita paused for a second. "You will still keep some devil attributes with you… like healing and strength, you just won't be able to transform like you just did."
"A normal… life…" The idea of living like everyone else, and being happy, intrigued Denji. "But what about you, Pochita? What'll happen to you?"
"Don't worry Denji, I will still be part of you.." Pochita said calmly. "Though, If you choose to transform Denji, I'll no longer be able to conceal your devil abilities…"
"So… I can live like an ordinary person… but I can't use most of my devil powers…" Denji thought for a moment before answering Pochita. "I'll do it, as long you remain part of me, and I get to live a nice life… I'll do it."
"Alright, Denji… just remember, I'll always be a part of you…" With a smile on his face, Denji hugged Pochita as his vision faded once again.
Tristain Academy of Magic, Tristain, Halkeginia
Today was the day of the Summoning Ritual for second-year students, this day is one of the most important days for a noble. All of the students were admiring their familiars, ranging from regular animals such as a frog, or to magical beasts like the blue dragon that sat next to her summoner. Almost all of the students at least…
"Now, was that everyone?" The balding teacher overseeing the sacred ritual asked. Professor Colbert looked around until someone spoke up.
"No, we still have Miss Vallière to go." A voluptuous student with red hair said from behind the Professor. She looked over to the pink-haired student behind everyone else and smirked at her.
Louise walked nervously to the front of the crowd of her peers. Hiding her anxiety was something she could only do with her pride as a noble. This spell won't be like her other attempts at magic.
"Louise the Zero!" One student jeered.
"What will she summon?" Another added.
"There's no way she can summon anything!" A third student said mockingly. "We'll just have another explosion, nothing else!"
Ignoring their remarks, Louise prepared herself.
"After all that boasting, you'll summon something more amazing than this little guy," Kiriche commented as she pets her newly summoned salamander. "Right, Louise?"
"O-of course!" Louise stuttered. "Please…" she whispered to herself before raising her wand. "My servant, that exists somewhere in this universe!"
"What's with that incantation?" A blonde girl holding a frog commented.
"Well, it's original." Said the flirtatious boy standing next to her.
"My divine, beautiful, and powerful familiar!" Louise continued. "I wish and assert from the bottom of my heart... Answer my guidance!" She waved her wand around in the air before pointing it outwards. Sparks flew out the tip of her wand.
'BOOM!'
Louise was engulfed in a cloud of smoke as her spell once again exploded.
"Just as expected!" One student yelled as the dirt in the air came down.
"Are you alright, Montmorency?" Guiche said as he held Montmorency in his arms. However, Montmorency only stared at Louise. "Is something wrong?"
Professor Colbert noticed it before anyone else, the air was filled with the scent of rotting bodies. Hoping for the worst to not have happened, the fire mage watched as the dust settled around Louise.
"GAAH!" Louise screamed as she looked down at the ground only to see a young boy, covered in blood. She managed to smell the blood on him and gagged at its horrid stench.
"Is.. is that a human?" One student asked. "He's dressed like a gutter rat, she summoned a peasant."
"Nothing less from someone who put up a huge front!" Kirche taunted. "A peasant, and a dead one for that."
"Stand back!" Professor Colbert told the students. "I think the boy is still alive." Jean Colbert looked over the boy, he was wearing torn pants, no shirt, and a strange pair of shoes. He seemed to be scrawny with dirty-blonde hair, his teeth were uneven, and his eyes had a different shape to them. The boy's eyes started to open slowly. "Louise, I suggest you finish the contract soon."
"B-but… he's…" Louise couldn't finish her sentence as she looked at the boy.
Sitting up slowly, he yawned and stretched out his arms. "W-Where am I?" The boy said in a foreign language. Looking around tiredly, he stared at the pink-haired girl in front of him. "Yo… who are you?"
"The commoner can't even speak properly!" A student laughed.
"She must have found him in the trash or something!" Another said.
"Professor Colbert, can I please retry the ritual," Louise said as she looked down at the boy she summoned. The other students laughed at her. "I can not keep this foul peasant as my familiar!"
"Louise, trying a second time would be blasphemous," Professor Colbert said as he looked at Louise. "Peasant or not, this boy is your familiar now."
"B-but… Fine!" Louise looked back at the boy on the ground as her classmates continued laughing. The boy just gawked at his surrounding, not really caring about the situation he was in. "N-normally a noble would never do this with a peasant boy!"
The boy continued to stare at Louise. "Huh?" Looking confused he watched as Louise got closer to him. "Whaddya sayin'..." He responded, still not being understood by the people around him.
"My name is Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière. Pentagon that rules the five powers, bless this individual, and make him my familiar!" Before the boy could speak again, his lips were pressed up against hers. Pulling away from the boy, she still looked at him in disgust.
"W-what the hell?!" The boy yelled in confusion. "I-I mean I don't mind gettin' kissed by a cute girl but… holy shit, that was-" Before he could finish, he felt a burning sensation in his hand. "T-the fuck?! GAAH!" The burning sensation spread from his arm to the rest of his body. He stared at Louise with a mix of resentment, confusion, and exhaustion before passing out.
"Those runes…" Professor Colbert muttered while looking at the hand of Louise's familiar. "C-class is dismissed for today." The students promptly left the courtyard, snickering at Louise's familiar.
Staring at the boy in disgust, Louise called over a maid to get him cleaned before returning him to her room.
A few hours later, the boy woke up on a pile of straw in a strange room. "Huh… what…"
He looked around until spotting the girl from earlier. "Oh… you."
"Oh, you're finally done sleeping, you useless familiar. Do you know how much trouble I went through today because of you?" Louise said, glaring daggers into the boy's eyes. "At least you no longer carry that stench." Louise scowled at him before turning over to her dresser and taking off her clothes.
"Yo… YO… YOOO!" The boy cheered with a grin.
"Shut up, familiar!" Louise threw the pair of dirty clothes at the boy. "I suppose you know what this means, even if you don't understand me."
"I'm not wearing this…" The boy deadpanned still not understanding anything Louise was saying. Instead, he just threw it back at her and grinned. "So, you got a name or somethin'? Pochita said this was a different world, it sure seems like it…"
"I can't hear myself think with your constant blabbering!" Louise yelled out of frustration before getting an idea. "Oh, I know! I'll use a silencing spell." Louise picked up her wand and started waving it. "Ansur Rel An."
'BOOM!"
"Wha- what the fuck was that?!" The boy yelled. "Are ya tryin' to kill the both of us?!"
"I-I can understand you…" Louise stared at her familiar with a bit of confusion. "I could've sworn I used a silencing spell my stupid familiar…"
"The fuck's a familiar?" The boy asked bluntly. "Also, who the hell are you?"
Louise stared at her familiar in disgust. "You will not use such vulgar language in the presence of a noble! You are a peasant, know your place!"
"Denji…" The boy said calmly.
"Huh?" Louise responded with a bit of confusion.
"My name is Denji," He said calmly before leaning back against the wall. After letting out a yawn, he slumped back against the wall.
"Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière." Louise said wait pride. "I expect even a peasant like you to know how influential the Vallière family is."
"Never heard of 'em," Denji said nonchalantly. "Don't really give a shit either way."
Louise's frustration grew as she looked down at Denji before pointing to the pile of dirty laundry. "Clean my clothes, familiar. And start showing respect to those above you."
"Dude, just take it to a laundromat," Denji said while eyeing Louise. "And I don't really care if you're above me or not."
"I didn't think I'll have to use this, but," Pulling a riding crop out of a drawer, Louise turned to Denji. "If you won't do what I say, I'll have to put you in your place."
"Fuck that, I'm gettin' out of here." Louise tried to whip Denji with the riding crop, but he took off out of the door before she could. Running down the stairs, Denji felt a sort of thrill. "This place is full of lunatics!" Passing by a blonde boy and a girl on the way down, Denji carried on.
Running down the stairs after her familiar, Louise spotted Guiche. "Guiche, have you seen my familiar!"
Guiche looked at the girl he was talking with before looking back at Louise. "Yes, in fact, he did. If you need assistance, I will never turn down the request of any maiden."
Nodding her head at Guiche, Louise continued making her way down the stairs.
"We'll meet again, Katie," Guiche said with a bow as he held a rose between his teeth.
Denji continued running, passing by a red-haired girl sitting at a fountain. Finally seeing the exit, Denji grinned, he was outside. "Holy shit!" Denji yelled while looking at the two moons in the sky. "Two moons?! This really is another world!"
"Familar!" The boy heard Louise yell.
"Dammit!" Before Denji could speak again, he was lifted off of his feet. "Woah- what the fuck!"
"What a troublesome familiar," Guiche said arrogantly as he waved his wand around. "Causing so much distress to your master, especially a maiden of her status."
"Hey, ya bastard, put me down!" Denji yelled while being tossed around in the air. If he had eaten more than a single slice of bread since the last day, he would have made a much more unpleasant scene.
"Guiche, don't kill my familiar!" Louise demanded. "Just bring him down."
"As you wish," Guiche let go of Denji, causing him to start plummeting toward the ground. "Perhaps this'll teach you some manners, you scum."
"Shit, shit… shit! SHIT!" Denji watched as the ground got closer, until blacking out once again.
Back in Japan
The morning sun rose over an abandoned warehouse, and the smell of death emanated out of the building. Recent reports about the Zombie Devil taking refuge inside the old building came to the attention of the Public Safety Devil Hunters. Stepping out of a car, three Devil Hunters made their way into the building: two males, and a female with pale auburn hair.
"Looks like someone made it here before us." The woman said with a smile as she looked over the mutilated corpses littering the floor of the building. "Check the perimeter. Make sure there aren't any zombies left." She said calmly as the two men left her alone.
"You must have slipped through my fingers…" The woman stared at the dead bodies with inhumane eyes; yellow eyes containing multiple red rings within them. "Chainsaw… I'll find you."
