Mother's Day Morning

Nick quietly opened the door to his house so he wouldn't wake anyone. It was Mother's Day and he had wanted to run to the store and the coffee shop to get something for Jackie on his way home but the night before he worked in a landfill and he was not going in public without a shower first.

He quickly threw his clothes in the washer and then got in the hallway bathroom shower so he wouldn't wake Jackie by using the master bathroom shower.

After he was finished, he tiptoed into the bedroom, grabbed the pair of his jeans and the t-shirt that he had left on Jackie's makeup chair the day before instead of hanging back up in the closet. (Sometimes laziness pays off) and then quietly left the bedroom and walked back to the hall bathroom to get dressed.

He was just putting his shoes on so he could leave again when a little voice stopped him in his tracks.

"Hi Dada!" Boone said happily.

"Hi Buddy, go back to sleep, I'll be back in a little bit." He whispered to the little boy.

"Where you going?" He asked sleepily.

"I'm going to go to the store, I'll be back soon." Nick promised.

"Me go?" He asked excitedly.

Nick sighed, normally he wouldn't mind at all but he was in a hurry, he wanted to be home when Jackie woke up. Nick didn't have the heart to tell him no though, and he did love spending one on one time with the kids so instead of saying no he crouched down in front of him. "Ok, but you have to be quiet while I help you get dressed so we don't wake anyone, ok?"

"Ok, shhhh." The little boy said as he put his fingers to his lips.

"That's right." Nick answered with a smile.

He quickly carried Boone upstairs into Boone's room.

The child picked up a t-shirt with a dinosaur on it from up off the floor and handed it to Nick to put on. Nick smelled it, it smelled fine and there were no obvious stains on it so he shrugged and put it on him. Jackie wouldn't approve but she'd never know. He then grabbed a pair of pants that was on the edge of Boone's bed and put them on him.

He smoothed the child's bedhead down with his hand, again, Jackie wouldn't like that he didn't comb his hair but he was in a hurry. He put Boone's shoes on him and then they were ready to go, almost.

He got out a piece of paper and wrote a note.

Jacks: Boone and I are running some errands, be back soon. Love, Nick.

He figured if they didn't manage to make it back before she woke up, she'd have a heart attack when she discovered Boone was gone.

Finally, the two of them headed off to the store.

When they got there Boone looked around happily.

"Alright partner, what do you think we should get mommy? Chocolates or flowers?" He asked.

Boone had a different idea though.

"Chocite cake." He answered.

"Chocolate cake?" Nick replied with a raised eyebrow.

"Yeah." Boone said bobbing his head up and down.

Nick sighed but he still found himself being led by the hand over to the bakery.

"Which cake should we get?" Nick asked.

"Dis one." Boone said as he pointed at a white frosted cake with a red flower on it.

Nick had to admit it was pretty but it didn't say Happy Mother's Day on it, and Nick knew the only reason Boone wanted that one was so that he could eat the flower, and he also knew that all the kids would argue over who got to eat the flower and then it would be chaos instead of peaceful which is what Jackie deserved on Mother's Day.

"How about this one?" Nick asked him as he picked up a simple white frosted cake with the words "Happy Mother's Day" on it in pink icing.

"No dis one." Boone insisted as he pointed at his first choice.

"That one is pretty but it isn't a chocolate cake. It is vanilla." Nick told him. (That was a fib but Boone didn't know that.)

"Ok, dat one." Boone said, now wanting the one Nick had picked. Sometimes when they can't read yet, it's very helpful. Nick thought to himself as he picked up the cake.

They then wandered over to the flower section. "Alright, which flowers should we get mommy?" He asked Boone.

"Dis one." Boone said as he pointed to purple flowers.

"That's a good choice, mommy's favorite color is purple." He told the little boy as he grabbed the flowers.

They paid for their items and then left the store.

After they had gotten in the truck Nick glanced at the clock, it was near 9:00 in the morning, no way would Jackie still be sleeping when they got home, especially because they had one more stop to make. He was just about to start the car when he realized something, he wanted to stop and get Jackie a coffee but he there was a new flavor she liked and Nick couldn't remember which kind that was. He didn't want to ask her because he wanted it to be a surprise but he knew someone that would be able to help.

He got out his phone and scrolled to Jackie's best friend Lucy's number. Lucy had young kids so Nick knew she'd be up but he also knew that when she was sleeping she kept her phone on silent, Jackie jokingly gave her a hard time about missing several text messages over the years because she'd forget to turn her phone off of silent mode after she woke up, so when she'd finally check her phone during the day she'd have several unread text messages and missed calls, it was a running joke between the two women.

Hi Lucy, it's Nick, what's that new coffee drink that Jackie likes at her favorite coffee shop?"

He figured if she didn't answer him by the time he got to the coffee shop he'd get her an iced white chocolate mocha because he knew for certain Jackie loved those.

She text him right back though:

Iced Huckleberry latte.

Thanks Lucy, and Happy Mother's Day! He text her back before starting the car.

No problem, and thanks Nick!

"Boone, what do you say to mommy when you see her today?" Nick asked the little boy as they drove.

Boone thought for a minute. "Hi mama?" He guessed.

Nick laughed.

"Tell her, Happy Mother's Day." He told him.

"Happy Mama Day." Boone parroted back.

"Yep, good job!" Nick responded.

Jackie sat at home reading the paper, enjoying the quiet of the morning. Nick's note had cracked her up. She was just about to start reading the sports section when her phone dinged with a text message, she picked her phone up, thinking it'd be Nick. It wasn't though, it was Lucy's husband Steve's number that popped up on her screen. Jackie's heartrate sped up, thinking that something was wrong with Lucy or one of her two little boys, why else would Steve text her and not Lucy?

She opened the message.

Hi Jackie, it's Steve, sorry to bother you but I wanted to buy a coffee for Lucy for Mother's Day but I don't know what kind she likes. Help me, please!

Jackie laughed.

Iced Caramel Latte with whipped cream on the top. (The whipped cream is her favorite part!) Jackie typed back.

A minute later another text message dinged on her phone.

Thanks Jackie, I owe you one! Happy Mother's Day!

No problem, Steve, and thank you!

Just a few minutes later the front door opened and Nick and Boone came bursting into the house. Boone came up to Jackie and thrust the flowers at her.

"You and daddy got me flowers? Thank you, they are so pretty!"

Boone grinned proudly at her as he crawled on her lap.

"Hi mama, Happy Birthday!" the little boy said cheerily.

Jackie laughed.

"Thank you, sweetheart! Jackie responded, not bothering to correct him because he looked so proud of himself, and after all it was the thought that counted in her book.

Nick chuckled and shook his head as he carried the coffee and the cake into the room.

"Happy Mother's Day!" Nick told her as he handed her the coffee and leaned down and kissed her.

"Thank you, and yum, you got me a coffee." She said after kissing him back.

"How did you know to get me an iced huckleberry latte?" She asked as she took a sip.

"I uh, texted Lucy and she helped me out." He admitted sheepishly.

Jackie burst out laughing, she grabbed her phone and went to her text messages and then handed Nick her phone.

He burst out laughing after he had read the exchange between Jackie and Steve.

"Mama look it." Boone said, interrupting them as he gently pulled on the sleeve of Jackie's nightgown.

Once he had her attention he gestured happily to the cake.

"You got me a chocolate cake too? I am one spoiled mommy! Thank you! We'll have some after breakfast, ok?"

"Ok." Boone said with a broad smile before crawling off of her lap and toddling into the other room.

"The cake was his idea." Nick whispered to her with a grin.

"I figured." She responded with a smile.

"Thank you for all of this." She told him.

He smiled and leaned down and kissed her again.

It had been a wonderful start to Mother's Day!

The End! Happy Mother's Day everyone! Enjoy your day!
