This takes place after my Killing Despair series and contains minor spoilers for it but not much if you've read the first two chapter's of my V3 rewrite. I wrote this back in 2021 but wasn't happy with it at all and decided to scrap it but I reread it last year and realized it wasn't that bad and figured I'll post it for mother's day. I can't remember if that day came and went or if it was always intended to be posted today but still, I figured I needed to post something to show I wasn't also sorry if it's quality isn't my usual standard. Grammarly moved most of its basic features to premium users. And I don't know when or if I'll buy it. I probably will since Grammarly is the best spell-checking service, and I don't know how to get by without it. Once I get premium, I will come back and properly edit this fic and if not. Please give me similar free grammar programs that I can use. With that said enjoy the story and happy Monther's Day. XD
Edit: I did say I'd fix it :D
It has been a year since Kotoko and Nagisa were adopted into Dakota and Nagito's family. Both teens suffered from a rough childhood, so when it was revealed that Dakota was going to take care of them, they couldn't be happier to have a family who loved them despite the things they did years ago. It was a calm spring weekend, and Kotoko Natalie was sleeping soundly in her bed—that is, until her alarm woke her up. She groaned as she rolled over to turn it off.
"Ugh, I forgot to turn that off last night. It's too early to wake up." She yawned, rolling over to get back to sleep. When her phone buzzed, a message lit up the screen.
"Ugh, who could be texting me at a time like this?" The young girl rubbed her eyes, feeling both annoyed and awake, as she grabbed her phone to see what the matter was. Thinking it was her girlfriend Amanda Kotoko, her eyes lit up to see it was May 9, Mother's Day.
"Huh, it's Mother's Day! How could I forget that's today?" The former fighter questioned, "I need to do something special! I need to get Nagisa!"
The ex-Warrior of Hope got dressed and rushed to her brother's room, jumping on the bed startling him awake.
"Nagisa, wake up!"
"Gyaaa! Kotoko, what are you doing? It's 8 o'clock on a Saturday. We don't need to worry about school today." The blue-haired boy commented,
"Well, I'm sorry, but today is very important, mind you! It's a day where every child shows a special someone that they appreciate the things they do!" Kotoko yelled,
"And that day would be?" Nagisa laid back down, not wanting to deal with his adopted sisters' drama. "And before you trick me into helping you, it's not Valentine's Day today; that was three months ago."
"Nagisa, how could you forget? It's Mother's Day today!"
"Mother's Day?! Oh my gosh, has it really been almost a year since we've been adopted?"
"Yes, I guess you're right. We've been living with Dakota and Nagito for about a year now." Kotoko realized, looking down thinking back to her childhood.
"Hey, Nagisa? Did you ever celebrate Mother's Day with your family?" She asked,
"Not really; the only thing my parents were worried about was my grades. Plus, my mom's allergic to flowers, so we never got her any. But what about you? Knowing your past? I bet it wasn't pleasant."
"My mom had a big ego, so my dad was always buying her expensive gifts. After that, he'd take her out to dinner, leaving me with a babysitter, or we'd go on a special trip, to put it lightly." Kotoko explained pulling on her skirt, trying not to think back to it.
"I can't believe your parents would make you do such horrible things just because they wanted you to be famous." Nagisa frowned, knowing the abuse his sister suffered from.
"Yeah, I wasn't their baby; I was their ticket to stardom, a train I never wanted to get on." She joked halfheartedly, "That's why I want to do something for Dakota to show how much I appreciate the things she did for us. I can't do this alone, so will you help me?"
"Of course I will." He smiled. I want to show our mom how much I love her too, you know. But what should we do for her? I don't think we have enough money to buy anything special."
Kotoko was quiet for a moment as she thought, then she got an idea. "How about we make breakfast in bed? It's been a while since Dakota had that, so let's make something for her." Kotoko suggested,
"That's a great idea, but are you sure we can pull it off?" Nagisa asked, tilting his head,
"Of course we can. We're seventeen now; we can make breakfast for ourselves, so let's do it for our mom." The former li'l ultimate insisted,
"Okay, let's go, but we better be quiet. She should still be asleep." Nagisa said getting out of bed.
The two adopted siblings walked down the hall leading to Dakota and Nagito's room. Peering inside, they saw the two sleeping soundly.
"Shh, let's not wake them up," Nagisa whispered.
"Yeah, they deserve a sleep-in with everything they're doing," Kotoko replied.
The two walked downstairs to be followed by Muffin, the family's Yorkshire Terrier.
"Good morning, Muffin. Had a good sleep?" Kotoko asked, and Muffin wagged her tail in reply.
"Kotoko, can you feed Muffin while I get the cookbook out?"
"Yeah, sure thing." Kotoko grabbed the dog food and poured a little too much, causing the bowl to overflow.
"Whoops, sorry, Muffin. I'll clean that up." She apologized, grabbing a broom while the little puppy ate her breakfast.
"What happened, Kotoko?" Nagisa inquired, raising an eyebrow,
"I accidentally poured a little too much into Muffin's bowl. Don't worry, it's all under control." She promised cleaning up the extra food.
"So, what should we make for our mother?" Kotoko questioned,
"I'm thinking since Dakota comes from America, we could make pancakes or waffles." The former sage suggested,
"That's a great idea, and we could put some whipped cream and strawberries on them to make them extra special! I knew I could count on you, Nagisa!" The pink-haired girl cheered,
"Ha, thanks, Kotoko." He chuckled with a slight blush, "Hey, are you sure we should be doing this on our own? Maybe we should get Nagito to help us?"
"Someone mentioned my name?" Nagito questioned coming downstairs.
"Morning Nagito." They greeted,
"Good morning, you two. What are you doing up so early? It's the weekend I thought you would be sleeping in." The former lucky student asked,
"It's Mother's Day today, and we wanted to make breakfast for Dakota," Kotoko explained.
"Well, it looks like I'm not the only one wanting to surprise her. I'm heading to the bakery to pick up some cinnamon rolls, but if you need any help, it can wait."
"No, I think we'll be fine." I want to do this myself. But can you at least get us the ingredients?" Kotoko asked,
"Sure thing, what are you making?" Nagito questioned,
"Pancakes." They replied,
"Hmhm, I'm sure she would love them." Nagito chuckled getting out the ingredients, "Try not to make a mess, you two. I'll be back in a half hour. Call me if you need me, okay?"
"Okay, we'll see you soon." They waved goodbye as Nagito left the house.
"So, where do we start?" Kotoko wondered, "First, we should put aprons on; we don't want our clothes getting dirty. Then we should wash our hands before putting all of the dry ingredients in the bowl." Nagisa instructed,
"Got it." His adopted sister replied, and the two put on their aprons, washed their hands, and got to work.
"Kotoko, hand me the flour." Nagisa requested getting measuring cups out.
"Here you go. Whoops!" Kotoko gasped as she lost her grip on the bag, spilling some.
"Thanks, but next time, use the measuring cup." Nagisa coughed from the flour hitting his face.
"Sorry." She smiled sheepishly, also covered in the white powder.
"It's fine; there's still plenty left. Now let's move on to the wet ingredients. Can you hand me an egg?"
"Sure, I've got a whole bowl full," Kotoko replied, walking to her brother when she slipped on some flour and tossing the whole bowl in the air.
"Kotoko! Hold on, I've got you!" The blue-haired boy panicked, grabbing all the eggs before they broke. But two of them fell into the frying pan.
"Well, looks like we're having eggs too." Nagisa joked,
"Yeah, now that's what I call a happy accident," Kotoko added, making both laugh.
The two continued working in silence as Nagisa put the batter in the pan; meanwhile, Kotoko was mixing the extra.
"Hey, Nagisa, could you turn the music up? I love this song." Kotoko asked, stirring the bowl,
"Sure, I like this one too." He nodded, turning the music up a little. Kotoko started to tap her foot and sway.
"This has such a great beat. I can't help myself; I've got to dance a little." She smiled, allowing the music to carry her away.
"Careful, Kotoko, we don't want to make another mess," Nagisa warned, but it was too late as Kotoko spun around, knocking into the bawl of pancake batter and spilling it on the floor.
"Oh no!" She cried, "I've really got a case of the clumsies today."
"It's not your fault; we've all had days like this." Her brother reassured her, putting a hand on her shoulder. "I remember when my mom gave me new shoes for the school year. They were two sizes too big. I kept tripping for a week; once I even fell in front of the entire class. It was so embarrassing."
"I remember that. It got so bad Jataro offered to make you new ones." Kotoko laughed,
"Yeah, that was one of the nicest things anyone offered to do for me. So don't worry about it; let's just clean up before Dakota wakes up."
"Okay, thanks, Nagisa." I feel much better." She smiled, hugging her brother.
"No problem; now help me find the mop." He replied,
The two siblings found a mop and bucket and started cleaning just as their adopted mother came downstairs.
"Morning, you two. Oh." She stopped as she saw the mess in the kitchen. "Um, someone want to explain to me what happened here?"
"Sorry, Dakota, it's all my fault." Kotoko confessed, "I wanted to make you breakfast in bed, but I kept slipping up and made a huge mess."
"Oh, Kotoko, it's okay, sweetheart; we all make messes." Dakota cooed, rubbing her daughter's head, "Here, let me help you out."
"Are you sure it's Mother's Day? You should rest." Nagisa insisted,
"It's fine, you two; I've been meaning to clean the house anyway. Now where should we begin?" Dakota asked as Nagito returned from the bakery.
"Oh my, it looks like you two had a little trouble while I was gone." Nagito looked around at the mess and put a box on the table.
"Morning Nagi, what's in the box?"
"They were supposed to be cinnamon rolls, but the bakery was out, so I got some donuts instead," Nagito explained.
"Mmm, that sounds even better." Dakota hummed, licking her lips.
"I knew you'd like them. So can you tell me what happened here?"
"Kotoko's got a case of the clumies." Nagisa began to explain, "We were trying to make pancakes and eggs, but she kept tripping."
"Oh, poor thing. Why don't we clean up and make breakfast together?" Nagito suggested,
"That sounds like a nice family activity." The former Ultimate Performer agreed,
The foursome cleaned up the mess and worked together to make breakfast. Nagito and Dakota made the pancakes and decorated them, while Kotoko and Nagisa set the table.
"Kotoko, could you hand me a fork?" Nagisa asked,
"What? "Oh, sure, here you go." She replied, giving him the utensil,
"Still feeling a little down about the mess?" Dakota guessed,
"Yeah, a little. I feel like I ruined the surprise."
"You shouldn't feel bad about it. I remember the first time I made breakfast in bed for Dakota; Muffin got a little too excited and knocked the tray right out of my hands." Nagito recalled,
"Really?!" The two gasped,
"Yep, Muffin was a puppy back then, so she wasn't trained to sit and stay. She got into a lot of trouble when she was younger." Dakota smiled as she remembered Nagito opening Muffin on his birthday and the trouble the little Yorkie got into.
"So, I guess I'm not the only one who's made a mess making breakfast for you." The pink-haired girl realized,
"Of course you aren't, and even if you were, I will always love you and your brother." Dakota smiled lovingly, hugging her daughter.
"You know I'm so happy and grateful to have a mother who loves and supports me," Kotoko said tearfully.
"I am too sweet, girl; you deserve all the love in the world. Now how about some breakfast?" The other offered
"Sure." Everyone nodded,
The family gathered around the table to eat when someone knocked on the door.
"Hmm, who could that be?" Nagito hummed,
"I don't know; I wasn't expecting anyone," Dakota answered, opening the door to see.
"Surprise fam!" Kokichi Ouma announced coming inside with his boyfriend, Shuichi Saihara.
"Kokichi, Shuichi? What are you doing here? I thought you were visiting your parents for the weekend." Dakota wondered but was happy to see them nonetheless.
"Well, that's the thing; we forgot Mother's Day was today, and our train was delayed due to too many passengers," Shuichi explained.
"So, we decided to visit you while the crowds cleared out. By the way, we've got a card." Kokichi said, giving it to Dakota,
"Aw, Kokichi, you are too kind." Dakota was awed reading it in her head.
"It's the least I could do; I see you as my mother too." You saved me and my friends from that twisted killing game; the least I could do is show you my appreciation." He explained shyly,
"Oh, I love you guys so much." Dakota pulled Kokichi and Shuichi into a hug as Nagito, Kotoko, and Nagisa joined in. Dakota was grateful to have two adorable, adopted children and one honorary one. It was the best Mother's Day she could ask for.
The End
I hope everyone has a great Monther's Day and enjoyed the first Danganronpa fic in a good long while. TBH I have fallen out of love with the series last year. I still love it but it's not my main priority series anymore. Killing Despair is not canceled but I don't know when I'll be updating my V3 or dr1 fic's at least one or two chapters are done for My Life in Despair School, but I want the entire act to be done so you won't be waiting months for them. In other news I have a Tumblr now, which I'll be using to update you all on my fic progress and I mean it. If any of you are interested, you can find me as Creative Cutie. Hope to see you there; with that said gang I'll be heading out I'll see you again very soon I promise just wait a little longer and you'll be seeing me post more frequently until next time. ;)
