[The Gryffindor common room]
"Come on Ron. It's not like the whole school has to see you. Just me," she reassured him.
"It's the whole bloody school, Hermione. I won't do it!" Ron protested.
"Put it on and maybe I'll reconsider it. Besides, we can pretend it's not you. The mask will cover your face anyway," Hermione told him, an amused smile grazing her lips.
Ron grabbed the bright yellow costume before walking up the stairs towards the boys dormitory to change into it.
Hermione had made a bet with Ron that Cho would kiss Harry when they left the couple alone after the D.A. meeting. None of them really believed they would kiss; Harry was far too hesitant around her. But they still made the bet, agreeing that the one who lost would have to wear a bright yellow chicken costume to lunch.
The costume was found in a corner inside the room of requirement when they were bored during the meeting. Harry was busy helping Cho with some wand movement that she'd already been seen managing. Hermione noticed their joined hands around Cho's wand.
When they left the couple alone after the meeting, she made sure to grab the costume.
Hermione tried to convince him that the wand movement lesson was something more and they might kiss once left alone. Ron on the other hand was clueless as usual and was convinced that Cho's admiration for Harry was solely her being impressed by his defensive skills. She suggested that they made a bet on it which he was quick to agree to.
Hermione imagined what would happen by lunch; she could really envision the adorable pink shade that would reach the top of his ears when he was embarrassed. She heard a creak from the stairs looking up to see Fred and George walking down the staircase, a wide grin on their faces.
"We met our dear brother on his way up. I'm sure he's going to look adorable in that costume. Don't you agree, Hermione?" they teased.
She blushed, trying her best to hide that she probably would find him adorable in the ridiculous chicken jumpsuit. They laughed at her obvious expression before exiting the common room on their mission to tell everyone in Gryffindor of the display they would get by lunch.
Hermione heard a quiet cough making her turn around. Ron was dressed in the costume they found and he actually looked adorable. The arms and legs were a bit too short for his lanky frame. He blushed to the top of his ears, accepting the feathery mask that would cover his face.
"Fred and George have probably told the whole school by now. They will know it's me even with the mask on. I'm telling you, I won't do it," he sighed.
"Oh come on, Ron. What do you have to lose?"
"My pride. My sanity. My lunch," Ron answered dramatically.
"Oh, be a little more dramatic," Hermione laughed, rolling her eyes. "You will actually lose your lunch if you don't do it. Need I remind you it's bacon sandwiches today?"
"It's my favorite food! How did you know?"
"Your mum told me it's your favorite," she shrugged. "If you meant how I knew the lunch today, it was Neville who told me. He visited Dobby in the kitchens."
"You will make me do this some way, let's just go there," Ron said, showing every bit of nervousness and regret on his face.
[The great hall]
Hermione went to the great hall before Ron, giving him the chance to walk inside without him being associated with her. Because if someone saw him with her they would guess who was wearing the costume.
She sat down beside Harry, who immediately asked her where Ron was.
"He will be here soon, he just wanted to change clothes," Hermione told him.
She wasn't really lying, besides the part where she said that he wanted to change clothes. Hermione started eating the bacon sandwich that arrived on her plate. She almost choked on her first bite when she heard laughs erupt, followed by the sight of Ron in the chicken costume.
She gasped as he stole a few sandwiches from where she and Harry sat.
"Ron? Why are you wearing that?" Harry questioned, his confusion clear on his face.
Ron didn't answer him. He just took a firm grip on his sandwiches and headed for the exit.
"Sorry," she said, flashing Harry an apologetic smile before following Ron out of the great hall.
She could hear the laughter behind her as well as Fred and George telling everybody who was in the costume. Hermione followed him to the common room where she found him on one of the couches, having taken his mask off.
"Please tell me they didn't laugh at me!" he said as she sat down beside him. "I'm sure they did, but I was so focused on just getting the sandwiches and disappearing again."
"Of course they laughed. They know it was you too," she added, teasing him. "Your brothers made sure of that."
Ron groaned, hiding his face behind the mask he held up in front of it. He broke off a piece of the sandwich and slipped it into his mouth behind the mask.
"These are really good!" he exclaimed, once again taking off the mask. "Mum's bacon sandwiches are better of course."
She smiled at him. It was adorable how no matter how good the house elves's food was, his mum's food would always be slightly better.
He looked at her, getting a funny idea as his face lit up.
"You sure you don't want to bring the costume for your skiing trip? It's warm enough to wear out in the snow," he added jokingly.
"I'd rather wear something else," Hermione laughed.
"Oh come on, Hermione. What do you have to lose?"
"My pride. My sanity. My lunch," she smirked.
He grinned at her.
"As I said, this costume is warm enough to wear out in the snow and it's very warm here by the fire. I want to change into something normal before everybody gets back from lunch," he said, swallowing the last bite.
"Hurry up, I hear people outside!"
"Haha, very funny. You better remember this look, cause I'll never wear it again," he said.
"I'll make it my mission to get you to wear this again. I'm sure your brothers won't mind helping me ," she joked, taking the chance to really look at him now that he had suggested it.
Ron blushed, rubbing his neck underneath his left ear. She realized that she had looked at him longer than necessary and turned away from him as blood rushed into her cheeks. Did she just openly check him out? Yes, she did.
She sank down into the sofa, thinking of every possible thought that might be running through his head right now. Hermione turned around, relieved to see that he was already making his way up the boy's staircase. As if feeling her gaze on him, he turned around. He flapped his arms, making her laugh and forget why she was even embarrassed.
He really is adorable.
