So I have worked on rewriting this story and I have changed some things. I do hope that you enjoy it. A little back story, Ev is Coulson's daughter, you will learn more through the story but I wanted to play with the idea of him having a daughter when Skye comes into the picture and how things would play out in that case. Ev was born in 1990 as well as Skye. I hope you like it and I own nothing.
"So let me get this straight? You and I are going to go and talk to Tony Stark about what happened while he was gone."
"That about sums it up."
"So why us?"
"Fury thought I could handle it, I do things like this all the time."
"What about me?"
"Well, I think everyone figured you would be able to get him to talk if I couldn't."
"I do have a way of getting people to open up."
"Don't I know it."
"Then again it could be that I am a lady and we know how he likes ladies."
"No, you are just my shadow to see how it is done."
"Was my coming my mother's idea, yours or Fury's?"
"I don't truly know at this point we were all talking so it could have been any of us who first brought it up."
"Mom doesn't like me to go in the field with just anyone."
"I know, another reason I am sure she sent you with me and not on another mission with someone else."
"How do you think this will play out?"
"Never know, if he lives up to the stories it sounds like it will be interesting."
"Well let's hope for the best."
Once there they talked to Miss. Potts then watched as Stark made the announcement of no more weapons which definitely piqued her interest.
After different attempts at talking to Stark and then being chased by a robot, they finally got to talk to Mr. Stark.
"Who's the girl?"
"Evangeline, I'm an agent at SHIELD and I have heard a lot about you Stark."
"Is that so?"
"You used to sneak into your father's lab when he was gone and try to figure out new inventions."
"How would you know that?"
"Peggy Carter."
"You know Aunt Peggy?"
"She used to babysit me."
"Who are you really?"
"I'm an agent, who grew up in all of it."
"So why did Peggy watch you?"
"She was very close to my parents."
"That would be?"
"Well let me introduce myself fully. I'm Evangeline Rose Coulson."
"She's your daughter?"
"Yes, and she has a flair for the dramatics like her mother."
"Which one?"
"You have more than one?"
"Well I have my mom who gave birth to me, I lost her when I was six and then mom and dad here adopted me. They were all friends and so it just worked out."
"Now you work together?"
"Sometimes, now I work with a lot of agents but it is always exciting."
"I have to admit I didn't see that coming."
"No one ever does."
Months later they were back at Stark's place although as Ev looked around she was surprised at how big of a mess happened the night before.
"Were you here for this?" She asked Nat, looking at her.
"Yes, it was quite the party."
"I would say, how is baby-setting going?"
"Well, it has been a job."
"That I am seeing, did you find something to help him?"
"We found something to maybe help take the edge off but we will see how it goes."
They walk over to where Fury is talking to Stark and watch as he gives him orders. Before Fury leaves with Nat, Coulson tells Stark how things will play out.
"He will do it," Ev informs Stark and they all go about what they need to do.
Ev is going over a file when her dad walks back into the room.
"We need to go."
"Where, I thought we were dealing with Stark and this mess."
"New Mexico, we have an 0-8-4."
"Really"
"Yes and Fury wants us to go in and confirm it. We will be meeting Barton there."
"Then we best get going." They went to tell Stark goodbye before they left.
"Nice to see you again Mr. Stark. I do hope you can find something to help you."
"Thank you, it was nice to see you again as well, mini spy agent."
"You can call me Ev."
"I like the other better."
"Bye, Mr. Stark."
"You can call me Tony.
"We will see." With that, the father-daughter duo walked out and made their way to check out the 0-8-4.
"It looks like a hammer."
"Really?"
"Well look at it, it's like a larger hammer. Am I wrong?"
"She has a point."
"Clint" Ev said before running over to him and the two hugged each other.
"It has been so long."
"I know, I will talk to Fury. You, Nat, and I need to work together more."
"If anyone can get him to do something it will be you."
"That you are very right about."
"Anyone know what this is?"
"My guess is a hammer of some kind."
"That's all you have Ev?"
"Better than everyone else at this point."
"I have missed you."
"Isn't that nice" They all walked in to figure out what was going on.
As they worked Ev was intrigued by the men who showed up and waited for her dad to come back in from talking to him.
"You know he is kind of dreamy."
"Why would you say that?"
"Look at him." Phil rolled his eyes as he walked away from his daughter. Ev got an idea and snuck into the room they were keeping him in.
"So I see that he was not getting anywhere but maybe you will be willing to talk to me. My name is Evangeline but everyone calls me Ev. What is your name?"
She waited but he said nothing.
"Alright, what about your cool-looking hammer, what does it do?"
After a moment Thor looked at the girl.
"It holds power."
"Power like electricity or magic powers."
"Thunder"
"Thunder, from a hammer. I don't understand." He didn't say anything else and after a moment it hit Ev what it was and who he was.
"Your Thor"
"You know me?"
"I have heard stories of you. I was not sure if they were real. Does the hammer control your thunder power? How does all of it work?"
"The hammer is my power."
"So why could you not pick it up?"
"Odin said I'm unworthy of it."
"Your dad, why?"
"Because I would not make a good king in his eyes."
"Who is he to say that?"
"The King and my father."
"Just because he says it does not mean it is true. You can be anything, and be worthy. Maybe you can't because you stopped believing in yourself. Sometimes the belief we have in ourselves is the most powerful thing we can have. Don't let what others think stop you from seeing who you truly are."
"You would not understand how it works there."
"No, because I don't believe in people being able to tell others who they are or who they need to be."
"You are not like most I have met here."
"I get that a lot." Just then a guy walked in and started talking to Thor while Phil gave a look to Ev and she looked down.
Once Thor had left with the guy Ev was in a room with her dad.
"What were you thinking?"
"That I wanted to help and I have talked to people like him before."
"He just took down multiple agents with no problems."
"Mom does that all the time, well did."
"Not the point. We know nothing about him."
"Because no one else could get him to talk."
"And you are the only person in the world that can?"
"I got him to talk to me, people trust you when you are open with them."
"That is not always how it works."
"Maybe not but I'm also not a kid. I'm an agent who has been doing this for a while and I know what I am doing."
"That Means NOTHING." Ev flinched as he raised his voice. Phil took a breath before he continued. "All I am saying is you don't know when something can go from alright to bad in a split second. I can't and won't lose you as well." With that Phil left the room leaving Ev shocked and confused about how to feel. What she did know is something about this reminded him of whatever had happened to her mother.
When all was said and done Ev had enjoyed meeting Thor and his friends but was ready to head home and see her mom.
"It was nice working with you little one."
"You as well Clint. I am going to see about working with you and Nat again. I miss working with both of you all the time."
"Well, I hope to work with you again soon. Say hi to your mom for me."
"Will do, bye Clint." With a hug, they part ways and Ev walks over to her dad.
"Are you ready to go?"
"I am, are you?"
"Yes," The father-daughter duo head to the car and take off.
The ride starts quiet and stays that way for the first half hour before Phil speaks.
"I'm sorry for how I handled things."
"Dad it is fine, you were worried and I am not always the best at following directions and listening to what you tell me. I just wanted to help and I thought a different approach might help. I didn't do it to be a brat or anything. I do listen to you I promise, It's just at times my head and heart are screaming different things, and sometimes the other one wins in what I decide to do."
"That is one of the things that makes you so good and special. You have helped so many people and changed so many lives because of following your heart but I just got upset even though I knew you did the right thing. I was scared that at any moment he was going to hurt you. That I would not be able to protect you, I can't fail you as well."
"Does this have to do with what happened to Mom?"
"I was not able to help your mom and I will never forgive myself for that. The thought of something happening to you as well. I would never be able to deal with something happening to you. I have not been able to keep all of you safe. I have failed your mom but I can't fail you as well."
"Dad you didn't fail Mom and I'm sure she would say the same. Mom will be able to work things out one day and come back to us. You are not going to lose me and we will get her back."
"I don't know what I did to deserve a daughter like you but I am glad I have you. I'm sorry for yelling at you."
"It's alright dad, truth be told I'm kind of surprised it took you so long to yell at me. I know I have not always been an easy daughter."
"But it has been the greatest mission in my life to be your father."
"Well, it has been pretty amazing and special to be your daughter. Thanks for loving me and always being there. I know I don't say it all the time but I am grateful that I got you as a dad."
"You are truly welcome. But being your dad is my favorite thing. Whether you say thank you every day or not at all. I will always have your back. Making sure that people don't hurt you."
"I will always have yours as well."
"I love you, sweetheart"
"I love you, Daddy."
"Wow Daddy, you have not called me that in a while."
"I thought you could use it."
"That I can."
The rest of the drive was spent as a fun father-daughter road trip.
Time passed and Ev was sitting in a room with her father and Fury as they watched Captain America with the doctors that were looking him over.
"I can't believe he is alive. This is the coolest thing to ever happen here."
"Dad, you're fangirling."
"I know, I just can't help it. That is Steve Rogers, Captain America. MY Hero."
"Yes Dad, I'm well aware of all of that."
"Ev I am sending you in to talk to him."
"Why," father and daughter said at the same time.
"You are one of our best and close with Peggy and the others."
"I am too," Phil muttered as Ev took a turn in rolling her eyes at him.
"This might not go the way you want."
"Just try please."
"Alright, here goes nothing." She got up and walked into the room just as the doctors walked out.
"Hello Steve my name is Evangeline but everyone calls me Ev. It's nice to meet you."
"It's nice to meet you as well. I thought the other guy would come in."
"No, he figured I would be better at this. Nicer, not so blunt or bossy. With Fury, it could be anything truly. But I get off point, I want to help you with anything you need. So you can ask me anything and I will do my best to answer or help, or find you someone or something that can."
"Do you know what happened?"
"You went into the ice and they could not find you. Howard Stark looked for you and Peggy, everyone did. Howard put everything he had into finding you but slowly time went on and all of them had to move forward with life. We are thinking that something with the super soldier serum is the reason you were able to live for so long in the ice but we still don't know for sure. I wish I could give you more answers about that but the truth is we just don't know yet."
"What about all of this?"
"SHIELD `` is a new version of the SSR. Howard and Peggy built all of this and did some amazing things with it. I know there is a lot to take in and learn. I'm sure you are feeling overwhelmed with everything right now and I really want to be able to help you in any way that I can. But it is also alright to just take a moment and let things sink in. The world is very different than how it was when you went into the ice. A lot has changed and happened and it's alright to feel overwhelmed with all of it. So feel free to take any time you need to understand things and to just come to terms with things because it is a lot. Just let me know when you are ready and I will tell you everything and I will try to teach you how to live in this new world you find yourself in."
"Thank you for being so understanding and kind. I was slightly worried that people were not like that anymore."
"There are plenty of people who are rude and all but there are kind people. Don't worry, I'm sure you will be fine."
"You are making this a lot easier. Peggy and the others, did you know them?"
"Very well, I spent a lot of time with all of them. They are family to me and I love them all."
"Are they all gone?"
"All but Peggy. She is in a nursing home and has Alzheimer's. So she has good days and not-so-good days. But she also has the most amazing stories when she is having a good day."
"That sounds like her. Did the others just die over time?"
"Most of them yes, Howard died in a car accident with his wife but has a son Tony Stark and from what Peggy says he is a lot like what Howard used to be like. So there is that, although he might mellow some now that he is dating Pepper, I guess only time will tell."
"You know a lot."
"In my line of work, you need to."
"So are they family or do you just call them family?"
"No, I'm not related to any of them. My mom met Peggy as a teenager after she ran away from the foster system and Peggy helped her. At 18 mom joined SHIELD, made friends and life was good. Peggy and the others became her family. Then she had me and for the next little while things were good with some bad mixed in. When I was six my mom died on a mission and her best friends she had made at the academy became my legal guardians and then a year later they adopted me. Peggy and the others were the family that we all needed and I'm grateful every day for all of them and the love and acceptance they show."
"I'm sorry about your mom. I'm glad you had others to be there for you."
"Thank you, I got lucky. I was blessed with an amazing dad and mom who took me in and loved me even though they didn't have to. They chose to love me every day and I am a pretty lucky girl."
"They sound like amazing people."
"They really are. Although you are my dad's favorite hero. So I'm pretty sure he would love to meet you sometime."
"I think we can arrange that."
"Thanks, Steve."
"Anything for the person who has been so kind to me."
"That is the easy part of this job," Ev tells him with a smile.
It is a short break and over the next few weeks, Ev helped Steve settle into life in the 21st century the best she can. Things were going well until an unexpected visitor showed up.
Ev is on the helicarrier with Fury and Natasha.
"Will you tell Coulson I need him?"
"On it." Ev follows Nat to get her dad and meet up with the others who were there.
"Is it bad that I kind of want to see Mom kick Fury's butt?" Ev asked Natasha after overhearing her mom threaten to kick Fury's butt if anything happened to her.
"No, I would love to watch it as well. Especially Mama Bear. That would be pretty entertaining."
"That it would." The girls walk up to Phil and Steve.
"Agent Romanoff, Captain Rogers."
"Ma'am"
"Hi"
"Hi Steve"
"Hello Ev"
"They need you on the bridge. They're starting the face trace."
"Ev"
"Don't worry papa bear, I have her. I already promised mama bear. She will be fine."
"I will see you inside."
"Go, I'm fine." With one more look at his daughter, he made his way inside.
"It was quite the buzz around here finding you in the ice. I thought Coulson was gonna swoon. Did he ask you to sign his Captain America trading cards yet?"
"Trading cards?"
"They're vintage. He's very proud."
"He's your father then?"
"Yes, that is my dad, a huge Captain America fan. He grows on you thought."
They walked over to Banner and talked to him before Nat told them they should head inside before they started to lift up in the air.
The girls took the boys inside where they all talked and got to work on the things they needed to do.
Ev was helping Nat fly the quinjet to pick up Loki. They watched Tony show up and they got Loki. Nat talked to Fury while Ev focused on flying when they saw the start of a storm.
Then Thor showed up grabbed Loki and flew out.
"That is Thor, he's a good guy." Tony left first and then Steve.
"Do guys ever listen?" Ev asked Nat.
"I will need to get back to you on that one."
After getting the guys back they were back talking about what to do next when Ev saw her dad walk in with Tony.
"I'm saying pick a weekend and I will fly you anywhere you want. Have some family time with Ev." He tells Coulson as they walk in.
Tony goes on a monologue and they all start talking as Ev watches the back and forth with all of them.
A little while later Ev was watching as they were all fighting.
"Find your dad, '' Fury told Ev. As they all kept going. Ev watched from the doorway as the people who were supposed to help did nothing but argue with each other.
Then there was an explosion and they all fell down. Ev set up looked around and watched all of them. Fury walked over to her after giving the others orders.
"Are you alright?" He asked helping her up.
"I will be."
"I hope so I don't need your mother coming after me."
"I will be fine I promise"
"Go find your dad and stay with him."
"Got it." Fury and Ev went their own ways. Ev walked through the halls looking for her dad and realized that she was hurt from hitting the wall. She carefully lifted her shirt to see her side red and starting to bruise as well. Her mom definitely would not be happy.
Ev was trying to find him when she felt that they were losing engine power quickly. Holding onto the wall she continued to walk.
She walked into the holding cell and saw Loki out and her dad on the ground. Her dad shot the weapon at Loki and he went flying back.
"Daddy" Ev ran to her dad and looked at him.
"Hi baby"
"I NEED MEDIC NOW" Ev yelled into her comms.
"Daddy, I need you to stay with me. Look at me, just stay with me."
"I love you, and your mom."
Fury came in and started to talk to Phil as Ev held his hand. Until he stopped talking.
Fury pulled her back as the medics worked on him. Then they called the time of death.
"NO" Ev fell and Fury grabbed her before she made it to the ground. He held her as she cried. Before taking her out of the room.
"No, I need to stay with him."
"Evangeline, it's alright he won't be alone. You need to go out for a minute." As they walked out she saw Nat come running up to them with Tony and Steve behind her.
Ev flung herself into Nat's arms and more tears started to fall down once again.
"Nat, what do I do? I need to tell Mom."
"One thing at a time sweetie. Come with me and we will get you cleaned up alright." Nat led the girl out of the hall and somewhere she could have a moment without everyone watching.
"He's gone"
"I know sweetie. It is going to be alright, I have you." Nat told the younger agent that she had watched grow into the agent before her and in that moment she saw a scared little girl and promised to do whatever it took to help her.
"What happened?"
"Loki stabbed him. Ev was there when he died."
"Is she going to be alright with Agent Romanoff?" Steve asked Fury.
"Natasha will take care of her. She is very protective of her." with that they all walked out.
After a while, Ev went to Nat and Clint who were talking.
"Hi"
"Ev I am so sorry."
"It's not your fault Clint, don't blame yourself."
"Come here." Ev walked over to Clint and Nat and they pulled her down in between them and held the girl together. After a while of her crying and them trying to comfort her Clint walked out to the bathroom on the side. While he was there Steve walked in.
He talked to them and told Nat and Clint to suit up.
"I'm coming with you."
"No Ev, stay here."
"I can help and I will. You let me come with you or I'll go by myself."
"Fine but you stay with me." Ev followed them all out after changing and they made their way to the fight.
She helped to get people away fighting off the chitauri as she did. Once everything was done she was in the tower with the others as they made a plan.
"I'm going with Ev to tell her mom," Nat said.
"You don't need to, Nat, really I can do it."
"I know you can but I am not making you do it alone."
"We should go. I don't want Mom finding out from someone else."
For Ev telling her mom that her dad was gone was harder than she ever could have thought it would be. They held onto each other and cried. They didn't leave for a few days wanting to just be with each other and try to find a way through the pain they found themselves now facing.
The next few months were difficult for all of them. Dealing with the fallout of what happened in New York.
Ev was trying to come to terms with losing her father. Mother and daughter were trying to do their best to be there for each other and trying to find a new way to go on without their husband and father.
Ev was with Nat as they walked into the tower to meet with the other Avengers.
They were all there waiting with Pepper.
"Ev it is so nice to see you again," Pepper told her as they walked in.
"It's nice to see you as well."
"How are you, little one?" Clint asked before pulling the girl he had known most of her life into a hug.
"I'm alright, it's getting better I guess."
"What about your mom?"
"She's trying to hold it all together for me. She is so worried about me that she is not worried about herself. So I make sure that she is taking care of herself but I know she is having a hard time and she blames herself. Thinks she could have saved him if she had been there. It's just hard, she is more worried about me than normal."
"We are here for both of you, just feel free to ask."
"I know Clint and thank you."
"You were the little girl at Peggy's," Tony said all of a sudden.
"What?"
"You were making cookies with Peggy and Ana."
"I remember, Peggy told me you were her friend's son but you lived far away."
"You would play there a lot if I remember right."
"I was at Peggy's a lot. We were very close my whole life."
"So Coulson knew Peggy?"
"Ya both… well all of my parents were close with Peggy. She even trained both of my moms. So in a roundabout way, Nat and I were also trained by her. Although she did train me and Rachel all the time otherwise, I guess I would have been double trained by her."
"Who's Rachel?" Bruce asked.
"Rachel is Peggy's granddaughter and one of my really good friends."
"All of them have grandkids who are all best friends and work together with SHIELD going on special missions together and everything. The Howling Commandos welcomed Ev and her mom in and her mother. Then when Phil became friends with them at the academy they brought him home one weekend and the others met him. They all became friends and were close after." Nat told all of them.
"Mom says Dad kind of fangirled over them. It was his dream to meet all of them. Plus he liked having a big family. He was an only child, his dad died when he was young and then he lost his mom when he was in the academy. So they became his family just like they became my mother's family."
"They were quite the group to bring together. But they were all amazing guys."
"That they were, and they had the best stories, including about you Steve. They even told me stories of when you were a little boy Tony and I have to say you sounded like you were a handful for sure."
"What kind of stories did they tell you?" Tony was slightly worried.
"Ones they made me promise not to repeat unless I needed blackmail. They were kind like that. Plus Peggy would get mad at them when they would tell stories that were not age appropriate as well."
"I now worry about upsetting you."
"Don't worry it would take a lot to upset me. Anyways I am sure that you all did not get together to talk about me."
"No, we do need to discuss a few things."
They went on to talk about The Avengers and how they were going to handle everything.
Two days later Ev found herself working with Agent Ward on an undercover mission. They were dressed up for the fancy party and she looked over to him.
"Have you ever done something like this?"
"Why?"
"You are way too tense, someone is going to figure out that we are here for different reasons if you don't relax already."
"I'm relaxed."
"Sure you are, let's dance."
"What, why?"
"So it does not look suspicious and we can check out the room without people knowing what we are doing."
"Right, that is a good idea."
"Do you know how to dance?"
"You tell me." He led her to the dance floor where they started to dance around.
"Not too bad. Try to see where the best spot is to sneak out."
"Do you do this a lot?"
"Not a lot I guess but I have done it more than most."
"You are always working with people."
"And you never do."
"I like it being just me. I don't need to worry about keeping someone else safe. I will do better on my own."
"Well, I'm sorry that I have made this harder on you."
"No, not like that. You are pretty easy to work with. You are trained by the best and you are good at what you do."
"Thank you."
"I also wanted to say how sorry I am about your father. I knew you were close."
"Thank you, I'm guessing you knew because of Garett."
"He did mention you a few times."
"Well, I guess it is getting out more now anyways. Everyone seems to know I am the daughter of two agents and he was my dad."
"So who is your mom?"
"That you need to figure out on your own."
"You know I will."
"I count on it. I see our opening come on." Ev pulled him off the dance floor and behind a doorway that had a second staircase.
Making their way up they start to look around as they pull out a device to scan for the alien artifact they were sent for. Opening a door they walk into a room and find a safe behind a painting. Ward goes to use a device to open it when Ev starts to use a combination and then pulls it open.
"How did you do that?"
"I have learned a thing or two from all the people I work with. You would be amazed by the things I can get into." Ev grabs the artifact and puts it in the small case they have before shutting the safe and heading out with Ward. As they make their way back down the stairs and into the hallway to the party they hear someone coming.
Ev pushes Ward into the wall and kisses him as the people walk into the hall. They quit as they walk past and head up the stairs leaving before Ev pulls away.
"What was that?"
"That is how you make sure people don't ask too many questions. Now let's go before they find out."
They leave and make their way back to the hotel they are staying at. They get ready to leave both changing out of their party clothing.
"So is it that bad to work with people?"
"I am not a fan of it, but I guess you are not that bad."
"You should keep your mind open. There are a lot of fun missions you can have when you are willing to work with people."
"I will keep that in mind."
As they are heading out they are spotted and start to make a run for it where they end up on the roof.
They are both fighting off three different guys when one kicks Ev and she falls over the side of the building. Quickly grabbing the edge as her mom had trained her to do in this situation she holds on and tries to get herself back up.
"WARD" Ev calls out and then hears gunshots.
"GRANT" trying to pull herself up she starts to slip even more. Just when she thinks she is about to fall a hand comes down and helps pull her up.
"Don't worry, I have you." Ward pulls her up and she falls into his arms.
"You saved me."
"That's what partners do right?"
"It is, thank you."
"Well as I see it, I could not let the girl who just kissed me die right after. That would not be very professional." Ev let a smile come across her face.
"Would you look at that, I even got you to smile."
"What happened to the cold heatless Ward people told me about?"
"Guess you were able to melt some of that ice."
"We should get out of here."
"Probably" they stood up and that was when she saw the blood.
"You're bleeding, where are you hurt?"
"It is fine."
"No it is not, come on we need to make sure you are alright."
Once back in the room, Ev looked at his wound which was only a flesh wound but she still cleaned it and bandaged it up.
"You're different than I thought you would be as well."
"What do you mean?"
"You are one of a kind, in a good way don't worry. I don't think anyone has ever been so kind to me."
"It's just who I am" With that they left to get back to SHIELD.
Well, there is the first chapter with some background. There will be some more later. Also, Ev already knows Ward so we will see if it changes anything as well. I do hope that you enjoyed it and review it to let me know what you think.
