Prologue
For as long as she could remember, she never really felt like she belonged in their land. It was a constant ache that she could never quite do away with, no matter how hard she tried. No matter how much people tried to encourage those feelings away. It was easy to note when the thoughts overweighed her mind, as she was very expressive in every sense of the word. It was so easy for anyone to tell when her mood was soured- it was practically written out on her face in clear lettering when she was.
Often she would wonder why she differed from her people so much, and she could never quite understand why it seemed to be such a big deal in her own mind. She was seen as beautiful, but she wasn't sure if it was genuine, or just due to status.
Her father would make little remarks about the pale pigment of her skin. Never once were they negatively charged, but the comments never failed to plant little seeds of self-consciousness within her mind. He would praise her as a beautiful gem reminiscent of the night sky- her skin mimicking the moon and her hair the unending night sky. Despite the adoration of his words, she couldn't see it the same.
Beautiful or not, she felt out of place.
Her brother and herself were twins, but they didn't share much of anything in common. The love between them ran deep, however, and was constantly met in full.

The heat continued to beat down on her skin, and the pale girl let out a miserable huff of frustration. Fanning at her face did nothing to ease it at all, and she allowed her glare of frustration to bore into the sand beneath her feet. In the distance, she could hear the laughter of both Atem and Mana, but she let it fall far from her mind as she kicked at the sand with the tip of her shoe.
She'd taken shelter in the shade of a tree, but it didn't do much to appease the hot sun warming her skin to the point it was painful. She wanted nothing more than to join her brother and friend in their game, but she was hesitant to step back out under the intense rays. The last time she'd played alongside them, she had ended up with an angry, red burn along her arms, legs, and face. It'd been equally as painful, as well.
So, she stood on her own underneath the tree.
Kagome folded her arms and crouched down so they rested on her knees. Boredom soon claimed her mind, and she stood back up to leave the area she'd hidden away in. Her disappearance went on to be unnoticed by the other two, and she soon began to wander the halls of the palace in search of something to occupy her time with. Though, it failed to work.
"Everyone is so busy," she muttered to herself as a small pout worked its way onto her face. The pout soon twisted into a frown. What was she to do on her own?
What she wanted to do was not something she could manage. She wanted to have fun with Mana and Atem, but she couldn't ask them to play within the palace walls. The last time they had played inside they had caused a huge mess and ended up causing many people to trip. So, unless it was simple games, it was suggested that they keep their playing outside where they were less likely to run into people and trip them.
She had made it to the library of the palace, and she sat down at the table there upon giving up on searching for things to distract herself with. Her arms were crossed on the tabletop as she rested her chin on top of them.
Despite her wishes, tears had begun to build up and her vision continued to blur even as the small droplets started to drip down her warm cheeks. Soon her sniffles brought sound to the room, and a figure passing by picked up on the sound.
"Did something happen?"
Kagome looked up at the sound of the voice, only to soon look back at her feet with nothing more than a quiet hum of noise. Her hands fell to rest on her lap, and her fingers dug into the material of her dress. The grip she had continued to tighten, even as Mahad sat down across from her.
"... it's too bright out for me to play," she eventually said. "I'll get burned again if I stay out there too long."
Backing up her words was the red flush to her cheeks. No matter how little time she had spent outside in the sun, her chubby cheeks had already begun to burn. Mahad looked over her defeated posture before sighing and standing back up. A second later he had her scooped up in his arms as he toted her along with him. The startled yelp that came from her was accompanied by her hands frantically grasping at his shoulders so her weight wouldn't tip too much to one side.
Her arms circled around his neck as he carried her on his hip, and she questioned where he was taking her once they left the library.
"You made a request that I teach you some magic yesterday, did you not?" Mahad asked her, and Kagome slowly nodded her head in response.
"I thought you said you were busy today."
"I was, but not anymore," was his response, and the conversation died not long after he said those words.
A smile appeared on her face, and she tightened the grip she had on him as she rested her chin on his shoulder. This adjustment made her a bit happier than she had been.
She kicked her legs back and forth as Mahad sat down at her side to show her to book he had retrieved from his room. It was large, heavy, and full of complicated things she had never seen before. Her curiosity quickly bubbled up to the surface, and she halted all movement as he began to inform her of a few things located on the pages of the book.
Spells, incantations, and many things just like those were just a few of what he showed her at first. Once he had explained enough he placed a wand into her small hand, giving her a light smile when her eyes brightened considerably from the more saddened glow they had held before.
"This will help you until you can manage without one," he told her. "Are you ready to begin?"
Kagome held onto the wand with both hands as to not drop it onto the stone flooring. She nodded almost immediately and hopped up from the bench Mahad had set her down on. "Yeah!"
Her sorrows of not being able to play with Mana and Atem had now been forgotten by the pale-skinned girl, and she now looked to Mahad with excitement shining in bright blue eyes.
A few hours had passed by before Atem took notice of the lacking presence of his younger sister. Playtime with Mana came to a halt as he looked around for her, only to frown when he realized she was no longer under the tree she had sought shaded shelter under. His frown continued to grow deeper upon realizing that she wasn't there at all.
"Kagome?" he called out in search of her. There was no response, and he turned to Mana to tell her that he was going to find the other girl. He made his way back into the palace walls and took to looking into each room he passed in search of the missing girl.
Each room he searched turned up empty, and he was about to turn and search a different hall when an excited laugh met his ears. He knew that laugh- he almost knew it better than any other sound he could ever hear. Kagome's laugh.
He smiled at first when he heard it. The noise was so light and whimsical that he couldn't not smile at hearing it. His smile soon faded a bit at realizing that he wasn't the one making her laugh. His heart panged in childish jealousy as he made his way to the room he had heard his sister's laugh originate from.
Atem peeked in through the doorway in search of the girl. It did not take long for his eyes to land on her, and an unamused expression danced across his features.
Kagome sat with her legs crossed while situated on Mahad's lap. She held a wand in her hands. Pink, glittering butterflies made out of magic fluttered around the pair. The look of amazement that appeared on her face twisted into joy as Mahad offered her praise.
"You're quite the fast learner," Mahad told Kagome, and she looked up at him with gleaming eyes. "You might not need to have your wand for long, after all."
She felt excited at hearing those words, and she quickly looked back at the butterflies she had created with her magic. As she did so, her eyes landed on the figure of her brother standing in the doorway and silently observing the pair in the room. Without warning, she bolted off of Mahad's lap and ran towards Atem with her wand still clutched tight in her hands. The butterflies dissipated as she ran through them. Kagome threw her arms around Atem's shoulders and knocked him down to the floor before he could even try to catch her.
"Atem, guess what!" she said as she settled herself on his stomach. Her eyes met his amethyst ones as she didn't even pause to wait for his response. "Mahad says he wants to teach me magic! He says that I have a lot of potential for it!"
Atem sat up some, his actions forcing Kagome to move and sit on his lap. Her happy expression and her clinging to him like she would so often do was enough to clear away his prior feeling of jealousy. With a smile, he lifted a hand and brushed a lock of hair from where it had fallen across the bridge of her nose.
"That's great, Kagome! You'll be great at it!"
Auroua-chan: Pairing is undecided. Suggestions are more than welcome. This is an older story I'm redoing.
So this story will take place in both past and modern times. Kagome's pairing in the past doesn't have to match with the pairing in the modern time, either. Personally, I'm always a big Seto/Kagome fan though. I'm open to all suggestions. The Kagome in the past will have her little crush on Mahad still, as well.
That's it for now. Thank you for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
