Chapter 4
Harvey Smith had traded places with the day shift janitor. He usually had the night shift, which allowed him time to prepare for the day he would take out Julie Shineman. He had replaced all the fake courtroom door locks with actual ones and was the only one with a key. He hid a clean set of clothes to change into, to appear as one of the courtroom audience members, and made friends with the night guard; his lunch box was never searched, so it was easy to sneak the gun in.
At an opportune moment, he entered the courtroom with the audience and sat next to the door. Judge Julie entered, and everyone rose. He hated rising for a demon and thought, 'No one will ever have to do this again once I'm finished with her.'
As the testimonies droned on and on, he finally decided it was time. He went to the door and locked it, then he pulled the gun out of his pocket and fired it into the air to get everyone's attention. Everyone dropped to the floor, many screamed, and he yelled at everyone.
"Everyone, don't move! If you don't move, you will all leave here alive. I don't want to hurt anyone. All I want is Judge Julie. Are those cameras recording?
The director nodded yes, and Harvey said, "Good, keep them going; I want the world to see what happens to demons when they go against what the Lord wants."
The director said, "Okay." In a shaky voice, and crouched back down behind lighting equipment cases.
Harvey shouted, "Julie Shineman, stand up right now!"
While Harvey was concentrating on Judge Julie, Ralph noticed that Jenny was shaking, crying, and on the verge of total panic. Ralph crouched, duck-walked over to her, and put an arm around her, trying to calm her down so she wouldn't do anything to upset the man with the gun. He had her crouch down and moved her around behind the audience benches. He whispered to her to lie on the floor and try to be quiet.
Harvey saw Ralph and Jenny's movement and shouted, "I told you not to move. What were you doing over there?" pointing the gun at Ralph.
Ralph stood up with his hands held up and said, "I was helping Jenny; she was scared."
"Okay, Mr. Hero, and you aren't scared."
Ralph replied, "No, I'm scared, just like everyone else." Thinking that was what this guy wanted to hear.
Harvey told him, "Get back to where you were, and don't move again."
Ralph went back to the defendant's podium and crouched down. Bill eyed him and told him to remove his shirt and expose the suit. Ralph shook his head NO and pointed to the cameras.
Judge Julie slowly lifted her head above the desk with apparent fear in her eyes.
Harvey saw her coming into view and said, "Ah, there is the demon. Come down here," with a victorious smile.
As she stood and stepped off the podium, she recognized Harvey Smith, and with a surprised and brave tone in her voice, she said, "Harvey Smith, is that you?"
Harvey was amazed she recognized him since she would never let him speak and barely looked at him during the whole trial for custody of his son. He replied, "Yes, it's me."
"Why are you doing this? Is this what you want your son to see you doing? I thought you were a Christian. Do Christians do this sort of thing?"
As this conversation was going on between Julie and Harvey, Bill got the attention of Boyd Johnson, the Bailiff, and mimed to him to use his gun on Harvey. Boyd mouthed back to Bill, 'It is fake.' Bill looked disgusted and looked back at Ralph with a 'See!' look on his face, miming for him to take his clothes off again. Again, Ralph refused. Bill mimed for him to go invisible by looking down and closing his eyes. Ralph again pointed to the cameras.
Harvey answered Julie, shouting, "They do if they need to remove demons from this world. More Christians should do this. That was what I was teaching my son; how to recognize evil and resist temptations. You have kept me from making sure that he learns this. You are a demon and must be removed from the world. You are corrupting the entire world with this show. Only God can judge people, not a demon like you!" His voice kept getting louder and louder. He was shaking and getting more and more agitated.
Bill recognized the signs and knew something was going to happen soon. He whispered to Ralph, "He's going over the deep end, Ralph; you have to do something now, or he's going to put her lights out."
Ralph could see that Bill was right and quickly removed his clothes. With the suit exposed, he jumped up and turned invisible. He ran in front of Judge Julie just as Harvey pulled the trigger. Ralph put his arms over his face and head to protect himself. The bullets bounced off, invisible Ralph.
Harvey saw the bullets bounce away from Judge Julie, not even hitting her and was shocked that the demon had this much power. He stood there with his mouth open and dropped his hand with the gun down. At that moment, Bill tackled him to the ground and pulled the gun out of his hand. Ralph, still invisible, ran to the courtroom door and pulled the door open, ripping it off the hinges.
He shouted, "Everyone out now, hurry!"
Having been behind benches and containers, the audience and crew didn't see the door ripped off its hinges by an invisible entity. They didn't know how the door came open and just accepted it in their panic to escape the crazy person with a gun.
Boyd ran over and held Harvey down while Bill held the gun.
Ralph became visible and went to Judge Julie to ensure she was okay. She looked at Ralph and said without missing a beat, "I see why Mr. Maxwell brings you on FBI stake-outs." She sat back down on a chair, almost falling into it.
Ralph told Judge Julie and Boyd, "We must ask you not to say anything about this to the authorities."
Bill jumped in, "Yeah, it is a secret government operation that civilians can't know about."
Ralph explained, "I am going to have to destroy all the videotapes of this; it cannot be broadcast."
Judge Julie nodded okay, and Ralph went around and pulled the tapes out of each camera and crushed and slightly melted them with heated hands.
They could hear the police sirens. Bill told Ralph, "You had better get out of here, kid." Ralph agreed, picked up his clothes, and turned invisible. He went behind the studio building, became visible, and flew home.
Judge Julie asked, "How does he do that?"
Bill answered with his head cocked sidewise, "It's a secret, and you wouldn't believe me if I told you."
When the police came, Bill told them that while Harvey was yelling at Judge Julie, he could sneak up behind the guy, tackle him and get the gun. Several shots were fired as he went down, but no one was hit. Judge Julie and Boyd both told the same story.
When the studio crew returned, they couldn't believe all their tapes were destroyed. Nobody could answer how that happened.
Due to Bill Maxwell's involvement in taking Harvey Smith down, the producers decided that Bill didn't have to pay for Jenny's trees and fence. Jennifer Collins was awarded the amount for damages listed in the lawsuit and paid by the producers.
