Chapter 5
Bill returned to Ralph's house later that evening, crashed through the front door, and plopped on the couch. He said, "I guess I was pretty lucky today with that screwball attacking Judge Julie."
Ralph exclaimed, "What do you mean lucky? That was terrible."
Bill explained, "For me, it was great luck; I didn't have to pay for those stupid trees and fence."
As the words were coming out of his mouth, the doorbell rang.
Ralph answered the door, and it was his neighbor, Jenny Collins.
Jenny walked in and said, "Oh, good, you are both here. Thank you, Ralph, for helping me when I thought I would die."
Ralph answered, "That was okay, I saw that you were having a hard time, and I didn't want you to get hurt."
Jenny walked over to Bill and gave him a big hug. He stood there, not knowing what to do, and finally lightly patted her on the back. She stepped back and said, "I wanted to thank you, Mr. Maxwell, for taking down the crazy man and saving everyone in the studio. When he started shooting, I thought we would all die, but no one was hit because of what you did. That was such a courageous thing you did with no thought about the possibility of you being shot. I still can't believe that you did that. I'm sorry for all the bad things I said to you in the past."
Bill looked at her and said, "Well, that screwball had so many bolts missing that he couldn't shoot straight if he wanted to."
Jenny smiled and said, "Thank you anyway," and left.
Ralph and Pam stood there looking at Bill, who had a dumbfounded look on his face. He had never had anyone give him that many compliments.
Ralph smiled and said, "It looks like you have a fan, Bill."
Bill glared back at him and said, "Oh, shut up," and left.
The next day Bill went over to Jenny's and offered to help her plant new trees and fix her fence. She accepted his offer.
Ralph and Pam watched Bill helping Jenny through their window. After Bill finished helping Jenny, he went over to Ralph's house. Ralph asked him with a smile, "Are your eyes watering from all that mushy nice guy stuff you were doing for Jenny?"
Bill told him, "Shut up. If that gets out, you're going to ruin my reputation," and gave him a small smile back.
