Edith and The Elephant Chapter 1

A circus had come to town and the Gru family and even the minions had come to watch the show. There were lots of other people with their families in the big top too. There were clowns doing funny things like splattering pies into each other's faces and acrobats flying on trapezes. There were even some dancers doing some ballet which reminded Margo, Edith and Agnes or their dance recital of Swan Lake. At the end of the show, Mr Tal the ringmaster came into the centre ring with a microphone in his hand. "Ladies and gentlemen!" he announced, "As you all know, there has been a lot of people during the show". The crowd agreed. "Today, I am pleased to introduce you to the biggest mascot!" continued Mr Tal. A huge grey elephant stomped into the centre ring. The crowd gasped in awe. "Wow! An elephant!" gasped Dru.

''Cool! I'd like a pet like that!'' declared Edith. ''Elephants are too big for pets Edith'' said Gru firmly. "What? Why?" asked Edith. ''They being in the world sweetie'' explained Lucy gently, ''Wild animals don't make good pets''. "This is Stompy the Elephant. As you can see, he's the only circus animal in town'' explained Mr Tal, "Stompy, show those people what I've taught you". Everyone watched as Stompy stood up on his two back legs! Then he climbed onto a stool and then onto a barrel which started to roll along, but Stompy kept walking to keep himself put until he got off via another stool. Then Stompy followed Mr Tal around the edge of the centre ring.

He rolled over on his back like a puppy and even banged a drum with the stick in his trunk! The crowd cheered wildly. All expect Margo. Her interest piqued when she spotted the look on Stopmy's eyes. Despite the immense applause, the elephant looked tired and remorseful. ''Something's wrong. Terribly wrong'' Margo thought to herself. "As you can see, Stompy here has been trained with love and affection" explained Mr Tal. He secretly whispered to Stompy, ''Well, what are you waiting for?'' he said, ''Smile, or I won't feed you again till December!''. Hearing the threat, Stompy complied and he trumpeted. He stood on one back foot to get more applause from everyone there and he bellowed. When the performance was over and everyone was returning home, Margo thought about what she had seen.

It had been a good show at first, but judging Stompy's facial expression, something must be wrong. ''Hey, Mom...'' said Margo. ''Yeah, kiddo?'' said Lucy. ''That elephant, Stompy looked kinda sad'' replied Margo. ''Maybe there's something the matter with him or with the circus'' said Lucy. Later on, back at Gru's house, the three grownups were down in the lab with Dr Nerfario. Kyle was asleep and the girls were outside with Lucky, Blondie and the minions. They snuck back to the circus to see Stompy! The elephant was locked in his cage just outside the tent. Six ferocious-looking Dobermans guarded the cage. They had chains around their necks that were attached to stakes in the ground. The groups were in their hiding spots as Mr. Tal scolded Stompy.

''You missed only three left during your performance and forgot to do the grand finale!'' he said crossly, ''And just for that, no feeding time!''. Mr Tal turned to his dogs, Don't let Stompy out of your sight!'' he ordered. He walked away and the groups of Dobermans came out of their hiding spots. ''I knew something was wrong'' thought Margo as she, her sisters, Lucky, Blondie and the minions made their way towards Stompy. The gentle giant tried to lay down, but the cage itself is so cramped that the elephant can barely move. Stompy groaned. "It's OK, Stompy" whispered Edith. Stompy turned to see who was talking to him. "Don't worry. We're here to rescue you" whispered Margo. Stompy's eyes went wide in surprise. He stretched his trunk out to hug them. He was happy to hear what they told him. But just then, the dogs woke up and spotted the intruders! All the Dobermans growled viciously.

Blondie barked loudly at them. Agnes whimpered with fear as she clung to Margo. The minions looked franticly to find the keys, but Mr Tal had taken them away. Stuart searched for something else. He grabbed a large mallet. Hoping to smash the cage open, he picked it up. But it was far too heavy for him to lift. He fell backwards. ''AAAAAH!'' screamed Stuart. The dogs kept snapping at Blondie, who was still fighting back. Determined to save her, Edith began her ninja-like acrobatics and agility. She used her sword and nun chucks to scare off the Dobermans. "HA-HA!" said Edith triumphantly. She jumped onto the the hounds' backs, leaping from one dog to dog as they wheeled and snapped at her. Their chains started to tangle up.

Margo used some wire cutters to try and break the lock with all her strength. She grunted and strained. CLICK! Until at last, the door came flying open! Stompy smiled, happy to be free from the elephant-sized cage. He gave everyone a hug with his trunk to say thank you. "Come on, Stompy. Let's go home and invite you in" said Edith. They hurried away with the elephant, passing the guard dogs, who are all tangled in their chains. Bound together, the Dobermans growled. Margo, Edith, Agnes, Lucky, Blondie and all the minions rode on Stompy's back as he was so big. He strolled down the street. A while later. Mr Tal stormed past his clowns and Dobermans and stared at Stompy's empty cage. He was furious! ''I gave you mutts one job! Guard the elephant! And you dogs! YOU BLEW IT!'' he snarled at his Dobermans.

Then Mr Tal turned to his clowns. ''You morons! How could an elephant get past you?!'' he scowled. ''Sorry, sir, we were on our lunch break…'' began the thin clown. ''Yeah, I guess we just got ourselves…'' said the fat clown, but Mr Tal interrupted, ''Call the police! Call everyone!'' he snarled, clenching his fists and gritting his teeth aggressively.
