Edith and The Elephant Chapter 4
Back at Gru's house, Gru and Lucy called Edith for a pep talk. "Edith, I'm afraid Stompy has to go to his new home in the zoo" said Gru. "What?!" cried Edith in horror. "I'm sorry, honey, but you know, elephants weren't supposed to be pets" added Lucy gently. Edith couldn't believe what she was hearing. "No way!" she said. "It cannot be helped. The world is what it is" said Lucy. Edith burst into tears and ran to her room sobbing. ''Edith, wait!'' said Lucy, ''Come back!''. But Edith didn't seem to hear her mom. Lucy went upstairs to comfort her. In the girls' bedroom that the three of them shared, Edith had buried herself under her duvet so no one could see her cry, but her sobs could still be heard though they sounded muffed.
Lucy came into the bedroom. She sat down on Edith's bed and put her hand on Edith's back and stroked her soothingly. "Edith, you have to believe this is what's best for Stompy" she said, gently. "Why does Stompy have to be sent to the zoo?" Edith sniffled and hiccupped in her voice, "I thought I'll be the top pet owner for having giant animal like elephants. Then I could have won a pet competition". "I know, but life is just what it is. You have to adapt" sighed Lucy. That night when everyone was asleep, Edith lay in bed too unhappy to sleep herself. Her eyes were still sore from crying. She heard Stompy bellow from outside in the garden as she got out of bed and went to look out of the window at him. Stompy stretched his trunk out. Edtih quietly opened the window and climbed out onto his trunk. He lowered her to the ground.
''Stompy, I don't want to lose you'' whispered Edith, ''Lift me back up so I can go put on a few clothes and we can run away together''. So Stompy lifted her back up to the window. Edith climbed back in a pulled on some clothes. She went to get her coat and grabbed some food for herself and Stompy. Then she quietly headed back up to the window and asked Stompy to lift her down again. ''Come on!'' she whispered, ''We mustn't wake anyone up or we won't be able to escape!''. As Stompy crept away with Edith riding on his back, he accidentally crushed Mr. McDade's car and luckily no one heard it! The next day, Edith and Stompy were still making their way down the streets when they saw two men up ahead carrying a big piece of glass across the road. The men spotted the elephant barrelling towards them at great speed.
''This way!'' said one man. ''No, that way!'' said the other man. ''No, no, no! This way! This way!'' insisted the first man. ''That way!'' argued the second man. ''No, this way!'' said the first man. Stompy with Edith still on his back got closer and closer. At the very last minute, he turned a corner to the other side of the road just missing the glass. The two men released the glass, sighing with relief, and their mistake kicked in when the mirror fell over and shattered into pieces! Edith and Stompy carried onto until they came to some hedge plants shaped like mammoths. Back at Gru's house, Lucy was in a panic. ''Gru! Edith's not in her room and I can't find her anywhere!'' she wailed. Gru groaned, ''You're joking?!' he said. ''No" We've really lost her!'' cried Lucy.
Then they heard Fred Mcdade, the next door neighbour from outside, "ARRGH! NOOO!". They went out to see him in total despair at his car. ''MY CAR HAS BEEN FLATTEN SPLATEEN! AS A PANCAKE!" he hollered. Gru and Lucy inspected the damage. ''How could dat have happened?'' Gru said, scratching his head. Lucy ran to the back garden and back again. ''Gru, Stompy's gone too!'' she said. They gathered the rest of the family and they all set in Gru's airship vehicle to find Edith and Stompy. Hours later that evening, ''There they are!'' said Lucy pointing, ''Stop here Gru''. Gru parked up the airship. They got out and Lucy ran straight at Edith and picked her up for a hug while the others pushed and shoved each other to do the same. Stompy however hugged them all with his trunk. ''Where were you?! You had us all worried sick!'' Lucy told Edith.
"I can't let you take him away from me! Stompy and I are friends! And I am never getting rid of him!" replied Edith. "Edith, listen to us!" hissed Margo, "Elephants don't make good pets! They need open lands and friends to play with. Stompy has to go to the zoo". "And they need proper food like leaves and everything" said Dru. "Face it! Dis elephant caused so much damage in my house long enough!" scowled Gru outrageously. Suddenly there came a bumbling noise. But Gru didn't notice he was sinking into a tar pit! ''Dad! You're sinking!'' shouted Margo. ''What?!'' said Gru as he looked down. "Someone find a rope!" cried Lucy. ''Good idea! Quick!" said Dru looking around franticly and desperately, "Get a rope, Get a rope, Get a rope, Get a rope, Get a rope, Get a rope, Get a rope, Get a rope, Get a rope! Get a rope! GET A ROPE!" he panicked.
But it was no use, there was no rope to be found. "We haven't got a rope" groaned Dru as Gru sank even further. "Stompy! Pull him out!" urged Edith. Stompy stuck his trunk into the tar pit and pulled Gru out who was dripping tar as he came up into view. He coughed and opened his eyes, ''I'm alive!'' cheered Gru. ''And we owe it all to this feisty feline'' said Dru. ''Uncle Dru, "feline" means "cat" said Margo. ''Oh'' said Dru. Edith hugged Stompy round the trunk and said, ''Mom, Dad. You're right, Stompy belongs in the zoo''.
