Castiel was aware of the uncomfortable habit humans had of calling out to his Father during intercourse. He did not know for sure, but he assumed those awkward prayers had only gotten worse as the world became more secular.
He had not been aware, however, that individual angels could receive such prayers. Therefore he was confused when he found himself standing in the bedroom of the recent acquaintance of the Winchesters, Hermione Granger. She did not notice his presence. Rather she seemed entirely focused on what she was experiencing. The fingers of one of her hands between her thighs focused at the top of her sex. The other hand holding a facsimile of a phallus thrusting it into her body and mimicking the act of intercourse.
He'd seen humans copulate before. Had found himself invisible in a room when Dean had a partner. He'd waited until they were finished before making his presence known, though Dean had yelled at him for not knocking anyway. He knew humans fornicated for pleasure as well as procreation, but he'd never realized they'd do so alone, or with tools to simulate the experience.
He was fascinated as he watched her. The way her skin flushed and her heart raced. The way she whispered his name on a ragged exhale. The first time she said it her eyes were closed, but the second time, she was looking directly at him.
"Castiel..." She seemed a little shocked when she realized he was standing there. Then her lips tipped up in a mischievous smile. "Learning something new?"
He found his head had tilted to the side as he watched her. An odd habit he'd picked up that Sam Winchester referred to as his "contemplation face."
"Yes," he told her.
"Would you be interested in a more hands-on learning experience?"
He took a step closer to her bed, thinking of the way the sight and sound and smell of her was making his vessel react. Perhaps it would be beneficial to learn more. "Yes."
