Closing the door to her room in Granny's bed and breakfast, a soft sigh escaped from Emma's lips as she pulled off her signature red leather jacket, the one she'd bought in Tennessee for $3.75 at a local thrift store. Throwing it over the back of the chair near the table that was beneath the window, she smirked a bit at the irony of her choosing a /red/ jacket when now it seemed she was rather besotted with Little Red Riding Hood. She sat on the edge of the bed to start working on the laces of her boots free, her feet were killing her and she just wanted them off.
Her life has completely turned upside since her son had appeared on her doorstep almost a year ago now. Turns out he was right and the whole town was fairy tale characters under a curse caused by his adoptive mother. Her parents hadn't been dead beats who'd left her on the side of the road, no they'd just put her in a magic tree so that she could save their people.
And while Emma understood the why of what they'd done, she can't help the twenty eight years of loneliness, bitterness and scars from being in the foster system. Surely being here in the town was better than being abused physically for her entire life. She also knew she was being pretty unreasonable but magic and fairy tales weren't real in the world they'd sent her too and this was too much for her at the moment.
After the curse had broken and she'd realized that her best friend was actually the mother that had given her up, she'd rushed back to the loft, packed her shit and ran to Granny's. Truthfully, if it hadn't been for Henry, she would have left Storybrooke and never looked back. Ruby had been here helping to calm the people within with Granny, she'd taken one look at her and had given her the key and that had been two days ago.
Tugging the second boot off, she groaned in relief and flexed her toes before she stood with the intention to take a long hot shower and then sleep for like a million years when there was a knock on the door.
A frown formed on Emma's lips as she pulled it open expecting it to be Henry, Mary Margaret or David but instead it was Ruby with a hot chocolate topped with cinnamon. Holding out the mug and a grin on her crimson painted lips, her words were gentle.
"I figured you could use a little pick me up." Well, she wasn't wrong. Letting out a sigh of defeat, she took the mug and opened up the door. Before she could say to come in, Ruby was smirking and sliding in.
"Thank you, beautiful" Emma said before taking a sip of her favorite guilty pleasure, one it seemed she shared with Snow White, who was her mother and nope, she was not going down that train of thought right now.
"No problem…on both accounts, Sheriff." Ruby teased before throwing herself on the fluffy bed that faced the window which gave a view to the clock tower.
The look Emma threw Ruby's way was both heated and annoyed. While hearing her girlfriend call her Sheriff made her want to climb over the other woman and lose herself in her softness, she was still in knots about everything.
"So, want to tell me why you ran in here like a bat out of hell and have been ignoring all attempts at contact with Snow and Charming, you know, your parents?" Ruby threw into the room like it wasn't the elephant in the room.
A groan was muffled into the mug of delicious coco goodness which caused the whipped cream to poof out into the air a little. Damn, she wasn't starting small. Emma would much rather tell the tale of her going to prison than reveal that she'd gone from loving her best friend to basically harboring resentment and more over her abandonment. Placing the mug on the table, she sat down on the edge of the bed closest to her and rubbed her hand over her face.
"Damn, you aren't holding back the punches today are you? To be honest, that is a long story and I don't really want to get into it. Let's leave it as I've spent my entire life wondering what was so bad about me that my parents would leave me in nothing but a blanket on the side of the road. I'm only alive because August came through that tree with me without my parents knowing. Without him taking me to the authorities, I'd have died. So to find out everything I thought I knew was a lie….it's hard and these feelings don't suddenly just go away because I know different now."
That was more than Emma meant to say really but once she'd started, she couldn't stop and she knew Ruby was going to pull more out of her if she let her continue this line of questioning. The mug, now empty, was set down on the table and then Emma was turning around and crawling onto the bed.
On hands and knees, she made her way over to the brunette and once her long blond curls were hiding the both of their faces, she dropped her head down to steal a kiss. They'd only just started seeing each other before the curse broke and now with everything being a cluster fuck, the two of them hadn't had much time to be alone lately, nor had they had time to get to know each other as Emma, daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming and Ruby as Little Red Riding Hood.
Fingers pushed Emma's hair out of the way and then Ruby was leaning up to steal another kiss.
"Okay, message received. No more talking about your parental issues. Granny closed up for the night, she's going over to Archie and Gepetto's, so I was thinking maybe we could hide in here for the night?" Ruby asked softly, while the fingers that had been playing with her hair, moved to her neck.
A night in with Ruby sounded wonderful after the absolute hell of today. She'd had to deal with her parents trying to see and talk to her, saving Regina's ass again after she pissed off the dwarves and Gold had been in to see her to remind her of the favor she owed him. Settling herself in between silky thighs, she dropped her head down into Ruby's neck and pressed a kiss there.
Arms came around Emma and once she was being held, she melted against Ruby.
"I think a night in with you sounds absolutely perfect. I need to shower and then maybe we could watch a movie while having dinner?" Emma offered before pressing another kiss to Ruby's neck and pulling back so she could see her face.
Fingers with nails painted a bright red trailed up Emma's back as a grin was sent her way.
"I'd like to counter the offer with me joining you in the shower and then we can go downstairs and raid the kitchen. Granny made pot pies earlier and we just have to reheat them and then we come back up here and we'll watch the movie while snuggling? Maybe even getting in a few gropes with each other?"
A genuine smile appeared on the Savior's lips and she rolled them quickly so that Ruby was straddling her hips. Sliding her hands up Ruby's thighs, Emma pursed her lips teasingly as if she was truly thinking of turning the offer down. The brunette in her lap, started wiggling in response to the teasing and so only moments later, Emma was giving in with a laugh.
"Alright, alright, you minx. Let's go, into the shower with you. I'm feeling dirty after dealing with Regina and my stomach just might eat itself." Sitting up, Emma wrapped an arm around Ruby's waist and stole a kiss before pushing her girl off her lap and climbing from the bed.
Once they were both under the stream of hot water, Emma sighed softly when she felt Ruby's fingers start lathering up her hair. Slender fingers seemed to touch all the right places as they worked at massaging the scalp.
"Oh gods, sweetheart, that feels amazing. Did I ever tell you, you have magic fingers?" Emma groaned, meaning the statement in all the ways you could.
"I'm pretty sure you've mentioned it once or twice in the past week. Please feel free to stroke my ego as much as you want, Princess." That was a nickname Ruby had started to use in a term of endearment and Emma knew it was one of her girl's ways to help soften the blow of finding out her parents were Snow White and Prince Charming.
As always, Emma ignored the moniker and instead focused on the light flirting that Ruby had started engaging in which was causing the blonde to soften and not be quite so anxious and tense.
"How about I stroke something else after dinner?" Emma teased in response while tipping her head back at Ruby's request.
"I think you have yourself a date, Beautiful." Was the reply that came before Emma promptly relaxed as fingers worked the soap out of her hair.
Ruby had been the first person ever to wash Emma's hair that wasn't a hair stylist and the intimacy of it had slammed into her the first time they'd showered together. And it wasn't just that, it was the way that Ruby never seemed to expect or want more than Emma was willing to give. If Emma wanted to cuddle, Ruby would cuddle, if she needed to get out, Ruby would walk with her. There was no pressure and it was something Emma was not at all used to it.
And even though she'd been holding strong to that wall of bitterness, her girl was quickly knocking it down, brick by brick.
When Emma finally pulled out of her thoughts, she was being wrapped in a towel and guided out of the shower, blue eyes full of alarm swung towards the brunette as she stepped out onto the rug.
"You were pretty out of it and I figured you were like Snow and tended to get into your head a bit. So I washed you….I behaved and here we are. Now be a good little Sheriff and go get dressed and we can have those pot pies."
Sticking her tongue out like a child, Emma headed into the bedroom to throw on a pair of sweats and a tee shirt. Pulling her wet curls up into a messy bun, she did not have the patience to deal with those waves, she looked around to find her shoes and found Ruby pulling on a shirt of hers.
And the possessiveness she felt slam into her, knocked her off balance emotionally. Ruby in her clothes, Ruby smelling like her soap and her shampoo. Smelling like /her/. Next to the possessiveness, her heart skipped a beat and her stomach flip flopped.
The longest relationship Emma had ever had was with Neal and that had turned out horrible. Pregnant and in jail for a crime she hadn't even committed and the man she thought that had loved her, in the wind. But there was just something about Ruby that seemed to settle the chaos that had lived in her, her whole life. Is this what the songs mean when they said in a moment you just know?
Should she listen to her heart and to what it was telling her? Or should she lock the doors to her emotional fort and stay behind them?
It's Ruby's fingers sliding into hers that pull Emma from her rapidly declining thoughts and it's a smile from those red lips that has Emma's own pale pink ones returning the smile.
"Come on, Sheriff. Let's get you some of Granny's Pot Pie. And then after, some of Red's famous cuddles." Ruby teased as she led Emma out of the bedroom and down the stairs.
Comfort and Pot Pies sounds like everything Emma never knew she needed.
