Wine and Dancing
Summer, 1995
Sirius Black paced back and forth around Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place. The townhouse was everything Sirius loathed, and he could barely stand being stuck inside its walls. His mother's portrait wailed like a banshee behind the curtain he used to try and conceal it, house elves' heads mounted on the walls, miserably tattered and archaic furniture, and Kreacher's muttering and cursing were enough to make anyone feel depressed. The only thing Sirius looked forward to during the hot summer was visits from members of the Order of the Phoenix, who would use Grimmauld Place as a safe house. Remus was supposed to visit for a while after he was done recruiting new members this week. Before he was framed for murder, Sirius and Remus were together. But, ever since the aging Animagus had broken out of Azkaban, something had felt off between them. Remus was glad to see him and was relieved to hear that Black was innocent, but they had not had enough time to rekindle the romantic relationship between them. He had hoped that they would be able to spend more time with each other during the summer, but Sirius forgot that even though he is virtually trapped within his old family's walls again, Remus still had Order duties. "Come on, where are you, Moony?" Sirius grumbled out loud, staring at the clock on the fireplace mantle in the living room.
Another hour had passed before Remus Lupin had arrived. He was wearing his usual shabby robes and was carrying a large briefcase, much larger than the one he carried on the train to Hogwarts. Sirius raced to the front door to greet Remus. The former professor barely had enough time to set the large case down before Sirius flung his arms around him. "Moony, you have no idea how happy I am to see you!" He shouted with an ear-to-ear grin on his face.
Remus embraced Sirius slower, but still the same warmth. "I'm glad to see you too, Sirius." After he said that, Lupin let Sirius go. Sirius's smile faded. Black felt the hug was too short. He wanted to spend eternity wrapped in his werewolf's arms. "How are you doing?" Remus asked.
"Better than when I was in Azkaban. Not by much though. I hate being back here." Sirius answered honestly.
"I assumed that may be the case. That's why I brought you something to help liven the place up a little." Remus nodded towards the case.
Sirius tilted his head. Remus could see the gears turning behind Sirius's gray eyes. Remus began to remember how much he adored those eyes. "What is it?" Sirius asked, his voice like a child asking his parents what was inside a birthday present.
Remus smiled. "I'll show you." He lifted the case, took it into the living room, and opened it. The object was large. It had a base with an arm and needle, a round turntable, and a flower-shaped object connected at the top.
"Is this a gramophone?" Sirius asked as he helped Remus lift and place the object on one of the side tables.
"Yes." Remus confirmed. "I know it's a Muggle object, but if I remember correctly, you prefer Muggle music. So, I thought you might enjoy listening to some while you are here."
Sirius felt a sense of surprise and gratitude wash over him. "You brought this for me?" He asked.
"Well of course I did. When was the last time you listened to music like this?"
Sirius let out a quiet sigh. "It's been a while."
Remus opened up another compartment inside the briefcase and retrieved a large stack of records. "Well then, what would you like to listen to?" The werewolf asked.
Sirius had an idea. "Moony, why don't you pick first, and I'll be right back." He suggested as he headed towards the kitchen. He grabbed a bottle of Elderflower Wine that Molly Weasley had left at Grimmauld Place during her last visit. When he returned he heard the sound of a soft acoustic guitar coming from the flower-shaped speaker of the gramophone. He recognized it immediately. The title of the song was 'Here Comes the Sun'. "You still like The Beatles, Moony?" He playfully teased.
"Some things never change, Padfoot. I thought you might like something nice and positive."
He's so considerate, Sirius thought. However, Sirius didn't want Remus to treat him so delicately. Black respected that the shabby man understood he went through a lot in Azkaban, but he didn't want his old friend and partner to treat him like a fragile porcelain doll. Sirius wanted nothing more than to just pick up where they had left off before everything had happened at the end of the war. Sirius rolled his eyes. "Oh come on, Remus! You know that stuff puts me to sleep! We need something with a little more soul." The gaunt-looking man sifted through the records and found the perfect one to show Remus. Sirius changed out the records. A look of shock bolted through Remus's green eyes as he heard 'Jailhouse Rock' stream through the gramophone. Sirius opened the wine bottle, took a few sips, and began loudly singing the lyrics, while doing his best to imitate Elvis Presley's dance moves. "The warden threw a party in the county jail. The prison band was there, and they began to wail. The band was jumping, and the joint began to swing. You should've heard those knocked out jailbirds sing let's rock! Everybody in the whole cell block, was dancing to the jailhouse rock!"
Remus thought Sirius had gone mad. Why would he pick something that would echo his time in prison. "Wait, if you want something faster, I have a better song." He politely suggested. As Sirius set the wine bottle down, the werewolf changed the records again and then swing music began playing. "Benny Goodman is a great artist too." Remus commented. Remus reached for the bottle and gingerly took a sip of the Elderflower Wine and set the bottle back down.
Sirius's eyes glistened. Swing music is perfect for dancing. He extended his hand towards Remus. "Would you care to join me, Moony."
Remus always had a difficult time telling Sirius no, especially when he had those pleading puppy dog eyes. "I would be happy to, Padfoot." Remus took Sirius's hand and the two began dancing around the living room. As songs began changing and the wine bottle contents dwindled, both wizards grew more relaxed around each other. The dancing soon became stumbling, and Sirius felt Remus's grip on him grow tighter, as if he was afraid that Sirius might fall. "I really missed this, you and me." Sirius whispered.
What Sirius was unprepared for was what Remus said next. "I missed you too, Padfoot."
They continued teasing each other about their song choices, and when Sirius selected the Queen album, he decided to make his move. While 'Somebody to Love' filled the living room, and Remus and Sirius were laughing about something ridiculous they had done while they were at school, Sirius clumsily leaned in and kissed Remus. When Remus kissed him back, Sirius felt like he had finally gotten a piece of his old life back. He had his Moony.
