It's the morning after the big return to Port Charles and Spencer felt like he could still sleep for a week...and he would too if it wasn't for the fact that he was missing his Trina terribly. Her absence from his side was a deep chilling ache that wouldn't go away, but he knew that there was really nothing he could do about it at the moment. Her family hated him and probably with good reason. They would want her to themselves for a while before he intruded on her time again. So he had resigned himself to life at his grandmother's, under the same roof as the woman that had ruined his relationship with his father and had targeted the woman he loved with her psychotic antics. Amnesia or not, Spencer could barely stomach even the sight of Esme. But he would, for now. For Ace's sake if nothing else.
Stretching his tired muscles, he stepped into the shower and allowed the hot water to wash away the tension from the past few days. Then he stepped out and got dressed. It was time to start his day. He didn't know if he'll be able to see Trina just yet, but he'll at least call or text her. He didn't miss the concern in her eyes as he had walked away from her, patting her shoulder instead of doing what he really wanted, thanks to his fear of her father standing right by her and her mother's glare. There was something in him that told him that a public display of his love would be inappropriate and maybe too much for her overprotective parents to bear. So a pat on the shoulder was all he dared to give before walking away.
He was sending a text, asking Trina if she was up when he walked into the kitchen to find his Grandmother making breakfast. From the smell, it was his favorite. Blueberry waffles, cheese egg omelet, and buttered toast. He smiled at the sight of Laura moving along the kitchen. Being mayor, his grandmother barely had time to cook, but when she did, it was always a treat to look forward to. He got a glass from the cupboard and opened the fridge to take out a pitcher of orange juice.
"Grandmother, you're cooking?" Spencer poured the juice with a slight smile, trying to push the weariness he felt away.
"Yes. I figured that Victor most likely didn't feed you properly on that ship and a nice big breakfast would do you good...and also maybe as an apology," Laura turned to her nephew.
"An apology?" Spencer frowned, taking a seat at the kitchen table.
"Yes. I know that I blindsided you yesterday by calling Esme. I was so happy having you and Ace back, I wasn't thinking. We should have just brought him back to her at the house instead of having her meet us at the hospital. I am sorry. I know it was awkward for both you and Trina…"
Spencer sighed and looked down at his hands, studying them. "Well...I can't say that I was happy to see her that soon...and I especially didn't like seeing her anywhere near Trina. But I understand. Like I said, she's Ace's mom. She had a right to be there for him."
"I just don't want her presence to come between us. I'm just trying to facilitate peace between us all for Ace's sake. He loves his big brother...but he also loves his mother. He's a baby that needs both of you in his life. Especially since Nikolas can't find it in himself to be an adult and come back," Laura looked away, the disappointment she felt in her son clearly in her eyes.
Spencer felt his own heart ache for his grandmother. He knew that it must hurt her to see how his father was behaving. He should try to make this easier for her, but he didn't know how.
"I am trying to get along with her, grandmother. I wasn't even sarcastic with her yesterday. Did you notice?"
Laura chuckled. "I figured that you were too tired to be sarcastic...and perhaps too heartsick."
"Huh?"
Laura's laughter was sweet and genuine as she sat down and took her grandson's hand. "Spencer, I had witnessed the most romantic reunion that I have ever witnessed in my life. Trina flew into your arms and didn't let go until we had reached the hospital. I know real love when I see it and I could tell how leaving her side, even temporarily was painful for you both. I'm not blind."
"I wanted to take her with us so badly, grandmother. But she was with her family…"
"I know. It wouldn't have been a good idea. Even though I think she would have followed you anywhere if you had asked. I remember after the adventures with Luke...there was nowhere I wouldn't have gone with that man," Laura sighed at the memories, still unable to believe that all of that was finally over. No more evil Cassadine plots to stop. No more Luke...which hurt more than she cared to admit. They may have divorced a long time ago, but there will always be a part of her that loved him. After all, he did give her some pretty epic memories and two beautiful kids that she wouldn't trade for the world.
"It's going to be hard being away from her. We grew so close on The Haunted Star. All I could think about was protecting her and Ace somehow. I was so scared for her."
"I know you were."
"I still don't get why she had followed me. I mean...thank god she did, because I would never have gotten home without her, but the fact that she cared about me that much…"
"It's breathtaking."
Spencer nodded, happy that his grandmother seemed to be understanding him. "Yeah. I've always loved her like that, but to know that she feels the same is all I could ever ask for. The question...what now? How are we going to navigate being together now in the real world? Her parents hate me. She has her own life and I have mine...can we make this work?"
"Spencer, the question is, how badly do you want this to work?"
"I want it more than anything, almost more than my brother's guardianship. I just want us to be together, always. No more barriers between us. I want to take her on dates. I want us to spend the night together and cuddle in bed. I want us to... Netflix and chill…"
"Netflix and chill...I'll never understand that saying," Laura frowned.
Spencer just laughed. "You don't have to understand it, grandmother. Just know that I want it...but I can't do it here. Not with Esme about and no offense, not with you here either. I want..a private space for Trina and me...you know? Some place where we can be just us. No worries about psycho-exes or disapproving parents. Or sweet grandmothers who should have her own space to enjoy her marriage now that all of her kids have grown."
"Oh, Spencer…"
"Grandmother, it's true. You've raised your kids. You've raised me! This should be a time when you and Kevin can be together in your own space, doing you and Kevin things. You shouldn't have to worry about your grandkid's shenanigans. You should be enjoying your life, being carefree right now. You've paid your dues, you know?"
"I didn't think that you even thought about that," Laura blinked feeling tears in her eyes. She squeezed her grandson's hands and looked at him with warm blue eyes that told him how much he meant to her. "Spencer, I wouldn't trade a moment that I get to have you under my roof. It wasn't just for Ace I went to Greenland for, you know. I went there for you too, because you have been my joy for so long. You were the main reason I wanted Victor out of Port Charles. I didn't want that man anywhere near my precious grandson. I love you so much."
Spencer felt tears in his eyes at her words. Thanks to his grandmother, he had some idea of what it would have been like to have a mother. He loved her so much and would do anything at all for her in the world. He would give her the world if he could.
"When Mr. Curtis told me that you were there in Greenland...he had to give me the responsibility of getting Trina to the plane to get me to go...because I didn't want to leave you. You were one of the reasons that I didn't want to leave Port Charles at all! You and Trina and Ace...you're the most important people to me."
"He knew I'd want you to get on that plane to safety," Laura smiled, seeing so much of Nikolas in the young man, as well as herself.
"I love you, Grandmother."
"I love you too, my precious boy. Which is why it pains me to say this...but I think I need to, so you'll know that it'll be alright. I have things held down here. I can keep an eye on Esme and Ace. What I need you to do is move out."
"What?" Spencer frowned, alarmed by Laura's words.
"I need you to move out. Sitting here, I can see that you are miserable without Trina. And you just told me all that you needed to be with her and be happy and I need that for you. I need you to be happy, loved, safe Secure. So I need you to get your own place so you can have that private sanctuary for yourself and for Trina."
"But...what about Esme and Ace? I can't just saddle you with them like that…"
"Don't you worry about Esme and Ace. I have them handled. Besides, with her amnesia, Esme is not that much of a bother anymore. The aim is to make her feel safe so she feels that she and the baby are safe here. This way me and Kevin can keep an eye on both of them and step in if we need to."
"Grandmother…"
"I need you, my lovely grandson, to go get your own place so you can live your life with the woman you love by your side. With the way Portia was looking at you, you both are going to need that safe place. Trust me on that."
"I do trust you, grandmother. More than anyone...well...anyone that's not Trina…"
Laura just laughed and got up from the table to make Spencer a plate now that the food was done. "After you finish eating, we'll bust out your laptop and look at some apartments and penthouses. I know there's a building near here that may be suitable for a young man such as yourself. Sonny may also know of some places that you can rent."
Spencer happily ate his food, feeling better about his situation. His grandmother was not at all offended that he wanted something different from his current situation and was even going to help him find a place of his own, so he and Trina could have their own little world to retreat to when the real world got to be too much.
