Chapter 1: Comfort of Dreams
Seele sat in the back of the classroom, trying to make herself as small as possible. She fidgeted in her seat, her hands shaking as she tried to focus on the teacher's lecture. But no matter how hard she tried, her mind kept drifting away, lost in a sea of anxious thoughts.
"Hey Seele," a voice whispered from behind her.
She jumped, startled from her thoughts, and turned to see her friend, Lila, smiling at her.
"Are you okay?" Lila asked, concern etched on her face.
"I'm fine," Seele replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
"You don't look fine," Lila said. "Is everything alright?"
Seele shook her head, unable to find the words to express how she felt to Lila. She feared being judged and appearing weak if she opened up about her emotions. Instead, she retreated back into her own mind, where she felt safe from the world.
As the class wore on, Seele's anxiety levels continued to rise. She started to feel a tightness in her chest and a sense of panic creeping in. She knew she needed a way to escape, to find some kind of relief from the pressure.
So she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, focusing on her breath as she had been taught by her therapist.
"You can do this," she whispered to herself. "Just focus on your breathing and everything else will fade away."
She felt herself starting to relax, the tension in her muscles easing up.
"That's it," she thought. "Just keep breathing."
For a few moments, Seele was able to find some sense of calm, lost in her own thoughts. But then the bell rang, and she was jolted back to reality.
She gathered her things and made her way out to the hallway, keeping her eyes down to avoid contact with anyone. But then she heard someone calling her name.
"Seele!" It was Lila again. "Hey, wait up!"
Seele hesitated for a moment, but then turned to face her friend.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Lila asked, worry etched on her face.
"I'm just tired," Seele lied. "I think I just need to go home and rest."
"Okay," Lila said. "Do you want me to walk with you?"
Seele hesitated again, but then nodded. She knew she needed someone to talk to, someone she could trust. And maybe, just maybe, Lila could be that person.
"Thanks," she said quietly. "I really appreciate it."
As they walked through the school hallway, Seele's mind was racing with thoughts. She was grateful for Lila's company, but she couldn't shake the feeling of anxiety that was still present within her.
"You know, you can always talk to me if something is bothering you," Lila said, breaking the silence.
Seele hesitated for a moment, but then decided to open up. "It's just...I feel so out of place sometimes. Like I just don't fit in," she admitted.
Lila looked at her sympathetically. "I get it. But you know, nobody really fits in. We're all just trying to figure things out as we go."
Seele appreciated Lila's attempt to make her feel better, but she couldn't shake the feeling that she was different, that she didn't belong.
As they walked out of the school building, they were met with the warm light of the setting sun. Seele took a deep breath of the fresh air and felt a sense of calm wash over her.
"Lila, do you ever feel like you're just living in your own head?" she asked, her voice small.
"Sometimes," Lila replied. "But you know what helps me? Talking to someone about it. Even if it's just venting, it really helps to get things out in the open."
Seele nodded silently, taking in Lila's words. She wished she could be as confident and open as her friend, but the thought of sharing her thoughts and feelings with someone else was too daunting.
As they walked through the quiet suburban streets, Seele felt a sense of nostalgia wash over her. She remembered all the times she had walked these same streets, lost in her own thoughts and dreams.
"Seele, are you okay?" Lila asked, breaking her out of her trance.
"Yeah, I'm fine," she lied.
Lila looked at her skeptically, but didn't press any further.
As they approached Seele's house, she felt a sense of dread wash over her. The thought of going back to her quiet, isolated life was suffocating.
"Thanks for walking with me," she said, turning to look at Lila.
"Anytime," Lila replied, giving her a small smile.
Seele forced a smile in return, but couldn't shake the feeling that she was just fooling herself. She knew that her anxiety wasn't going away anytime soon, and that she would have to face it head on if she wanted to find a sense of peace.
As she walked into her house and closed the door behind her, Seele took a deep breath and braced herself for another night alone with her thoughts.
Seele's mind raced as she made her way up the stairs to her room. She felt like she was suffocating, like the walls were closing in on her.
She tried to take deep breaths, like her therapist had taught her, but that only seemed to make things worse. She felt like she was drowning in her own thoughts.
Finally, she made it to her room and collapsed onto her bed. She closed her eyes and tried to relax, but her mind wouldn't let her.
"Come on, Seele," she whispered to herself. "You can do this."
But the more she tried to calm herself down, the more her anxiety grew. She felt like she was on the verge of a panic attack.
And then, suddenly, she had an idea.
She reached for the notebook on her nightstand and grabbed a pencil. She started to write down all of her thoughts, everything that was troubling her.
It was messy, with spelling errors and crossed-out words, but she didn't care. She just had to get it all out on paper.
As she wrote, she felt a sense of relief wash over her. It was like the words on the page were taking the weight of her thoughts off her shoulders.
When she was finished, she put the notebook aside and took a deep breath. She felt like a weight had been lifted off her chest.
She lay there for a while, just taking in the silence of her room. It was a strange thing, to find comfort in her own thoughts, but it was the only way she knew how to cope.
As the night wore on, Seele's thoughts turned to her dreams. It was the only escape she had, the only place where she felt truly happy and free.
She closed her eyes and let her mind drift away, lost in the endless possibilities of her dream world.
For a while, she felt at peace, like the weight of the world had been lifted off her shoulders. But eventually, sleep overtook her, and she drifted off into a deep, dreamless slumber.
When Seele woke up the next morning, she felt a strange sense of detachment from the world around her. It was like she was living in two separate worlds, one in her dreams and one in reality.
But she tried to push those thoughts aside and focus on the day ahead. She had school, but she also had her dreams to look forward to. And for now, that was enough.
Seele made her way to school with a sense of apprehension in her chest. She knew that she was going to face another day filled with social anxiety, but she tried to remain optimistic. Maybe today would be different.
As she entered the classroom, her heart rate started to increase. She felt her social anxiety take hold of her, like a heavy blanket suffocating her.
She tried to ignore the feeling, but it was like a constant buzz in the back of her mind. She felt like everyone was watching her, judging her, waiting for her to mess up.
She took deep breaths, trying to calm herself down, but it was no use. Her social anxiety was too overwhelming.
"Seele, hey!" Lila's voice broke through the fog of her thoughts.
Seele turned to see Lila waving at her from across the room. She felt a small sense of relief, like she wasn't alone.
"Hey," she said, trying to sound normal.
"I saved you a seat," Lila said, gesturing to the chair next to her.
Seele felt a sense of gratitude towards her friend. Lila was the only one who seemed to understand what she was going through.
As she made her way to the seat, she felt like all eyes were on her. She wished she could just disappear into her own mind, like she used to do when she was younger. But she knew that wasn't an option anymore.
As the class started, Seele tried to focus on the teacher's words, but her social anxiety made it nearly impossible. She felt like she was drowning in a sea of anxious thoughts.
"Hey, Seele, are you okay?" Lila whispered, sensing her friend's discomfort.
Seele nodded, but she knew that her poker face wasn't fooling anyone. She felt like her social anxiety was written all over her face.
"You know you can talk to me, right?" Lila said, a note of concern in her voice.
Seele hesitated for a moment, but then decided to open up. "I just feel like everyone is watching me, judging me," she admitted.
Lila nodded sympathetically. "I get it. But you know what helps? Just forget about them. Focus on yourself and what makes you happy."
Seele appreciated Lila's advice, but it was easier said than done. Her social anxiety was like a constant cloud hanging over her, following her wherever she went.
As the class wore on, Seele felt like she was suffocating. She wanted to escape, to run away from everything.
"Hey, Lila, do you want to hang out after school?" she blurted out, feeling like she needed to do something to escape her social anxiety.
Lila's face lit up. "Yeah, that sounds great! What do you have in mind?"
"I don't know, maybe we could go see a movie or something?" Seele suggested.
Lila nodded eagerly, and for a moment, Seele felt a sense of relief. Maybe she wouldn't have to face her social anxiety alone today.
But as the day wore on, Seele felt herself getting more and more anxious. She knew that she had to face her social anxiety head on, but the thought of it made her feel like she was going to be sick.
By the time school ended, Seele was a nervous wreck. She felt like everyone was staring at her, judging her. She just wanted to escape.
As she walked out of the school building with Lila, Seele felt like she was going to be sick. She knew that she shouldn't be feeling this way, that there was nothing to be afraid of, but that didn't make the feeling go away.
"Seele, are you okay?" Lila asked, concern etched on her face.
Seele shook her head, unable to form the words to explain what she was feeling.
"Let's just go to the movies," Lila said, sensing her friend's discomfort. "Maybe that will help you relax."
Seele nodded, grateful for her friend's understanding. She knew that she couldn't keep running away from her social anxiety forever, but for now, the escape was a welcome relief.
