Some things never change.

...

Late at night in the SGC infirmary. Soft sounds of people breathing, and machines humming. Dr Frasier made quiet rounds of the patients, Colonel O'Neil sat by Dr Jackson's bed, refusing all suggestions (and orders) that he leave. Things changed but some things never did.

Janet stopped by the curtained bed next to Daniel's. After a moment, she spoke, quietly.

"Colonel? Could you just help me here, please?"

"Sure." he rose and stepped over to her side.

"Just lift her a little. That's good. Now back down. Just so she's sitting up a little more. That's it. Thankyou."

Jack nodded and stepped away again. As he went back to his chair, the woman's eyes opened and turned to follow him. She smiled slightly and murmured. "I like your nurse. I've always liked big, strong men." She sighed "And he's got good hands, too. Nice..." Her voice trailed off as her eyes closed again.

Janet smiled, a little sadly, as she turned away.

Jack noticed the pulled back curtains and the empty bed next to Daniel's when he came back in the next morning. (Janet having finally chased him out to go have a shower and some breakfast.) "You've released her already?" he nodded at the bed "That was quick wasn't it?"

The doctor looked away for a moment, before meeting his eyes. "Not... really, Colonel"

Jack read the truth in her face and swore softly. "I'm sorry. Can I ask, what...?"

"A staff weapon." Jack winced. "She didn't really have a chance.

"If it helps any," she continued softly, "She liked the "male nurse" I had helping me last night. She said she'd always liked 'big, strong, men' and," She smiled as he looked at her blankly "you have good hands, apparently." He reddened as comprehension dawned.

"I, uh..."

There was a soft snort from the other bed. Jack turned to see Daniel watching them both. "Danny, you're awake. How're ya feeling?"

"Lousy. But better than yesterday."

"That's good. You missed a great hockey match yesterday." The Colonel sat down at his friend's side and Janet smiled. Things changed, but some things never did. Life (and death) continued as always in her infirmary.
