Betrayal

Sakura collapsed, kneeling numbly in front of the lifeless body of her sensei.

She couldn't hear the murmurs of the growing crowd forming around her and the once fifth Hokage of the Hidden Leaf. Couldn't feel the pain of her injuries.

She reached to grip the hem of her sensei's tattered robe just as she felt the first tears fall silently. Her body shook as she tried to process the scene that lay in front of her.

Tsunade of the Senju clan had fallen.

Someone called her name softly beside her. She didn't know who. She didn't care.

Hands gently came around her shoulders, trying to move her but she could barely blink let alone command her body to respond.

She wasn't even sure she was breathing.

So this was what true loss felt like.

It could never go back to the way it was now.

Things had irreversibly changed.

He wasn't just a boy who left his village to avenge his family. He wasn't just a missing nin wanted for war crimes in the Shinobi Wars. He wasn't just Uchiha Sasuke from their old Team Seven. He couldn't be the man she wanted him to be anymore.

Their fate was simply not meant to be.

Sakura watched with pale mortification as two ANBU officers cover the Hokage's body in a white sheet and move to place her on a stretcher. Sakura's grip loosened and she let go of her sensei. Another medical officer announced the time of death while the crowd dispersed to clean up the damage from the battle and tend to the wounded. Some lingered with heads bowed and some murmured prayers for the safe passing of the Hokage's spirit to the next realm.

She couldn't think of anything else.

He did this.

Sasuke.

He was responsible.

Sasuke.

She witnessed the fatal blow herself, unable to do anything to stop it. For a split second she thought it was an illusion. Surely, the boy she knew so long ago would never commit such an unforgivable, irreversible act and then just disappear.

He knew what Tsunade was to Sakura. Her mentor. Her family.

Her hurt turned cold.

How could she have ever loved a monster like him?

How could she have ever been so foolish!

Unforgivable.

Despicable.

The words repeated themselves like a mantra in her head.

No.

More.

She knew how this would end.

She knew what she had to do.

She has to find him.

She has to stop him.

She has to kill him.

She has to.
