"Weirdo Magnet"
"Freak"
"Creepy girl"
"Oh-No O'Neil"
"April the Fool"
"That weird girl"
April was pretty sure she had heard it all. All those 'wonderful' nicknames her friends acquaintances had given her since starting high school. Okay, maybe it actually started around middle school, but it doesn't matter. It wasn't that bad really. Just some too-loud whispers she overheard in the hallway, and every now and again there'd be a snide comment. Nothing too annoying.
And yeah, April sat alone at lunch every day whenever Sunita wasn't visiting her, but hey, at least she had Barry's antics whenever someone insulted his cooking to amuse her. Could be worse.
She could've ended up with Dale in her lunch period. April shuddered at the thought. He was sweet, but in an over-the-top way that rubbed her the wrong way.
The teenage girl was just grateful she had her bots to text throughout the day. Things could be better, but they could also be worse, so you wouldn't be hearing April complain.
Much.
"And then he had the nerve to say I'm the weird one," April ranted to Leo, who was always up for some gossip over the phone during lunch period. "Puh-leaze. Wish Sunita was here. At least she'd have backed me up."
"Hey, what am I, chopped liver?"
"Sorry, sorry," April apologized, a fond smile tugging at her lips. "Of course I have you and the guys, I just meant someone here at school. 'Sides Barry, but he won't be backing me up in any arguments anytime soon."
"Yeah no, he's too busy pushing people off roofs," Leo replied, drawing a laugh from April.
"You ever gonna let that go?" April asked amusedly.
"Nope. Can't believe he hasn't been fired yet."
"I think people are too scared to fire the guy," April admitted as she heard a soft ping go off. She pulled the phone from her ear to see an Instagram notification telling her she had a new DM. She absentmindedly listened to Leo ramble about how bad of a guy Barry was as she opened the app, curious to see who was messaging her.
She recognized the username as one belonging to a classmate from her Geometry class and wondered if maybe they needed help with the homework. But once April opened the messages, her heart sank.
'Poor little freak'
'Acting like you're on the phone just so you can pretend you have friends'
'How pathetic'
"Hello? You still there, April?" The concern in Leo's voice pulled April's attention away from the rude messages.
"Heh, sorry Leo. Classmate texted me for help on tonight's assignment, must've gotten distracted," April replied, praying he didn't notice the shake in her voice.
"Oh ok." Leo didn't sound convinced but at least he didn't push things.
"I should probably start working on it, actually. I'll have to let you go.
"Yesh, you have fun with that. You're still coming on Friday, right? All-night Jupiter Jim movie marathon, with your favorite snacks~" April could hear the smile in Leo's voice and grinned slightly despite herself.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world. Later," April ended the call, groaning as she hid her face in her hands. She loved her boys, she really did, but it was hard having friends that no one could ever meet, with no way of proving that they exist.
April glanced around the cafeteria, trying to see if she could find the classmate that had DM'd her. She didn't spot the girl, though that didn't necessarily mean anything, it was a crowded area and April's eyesight wasn't great even with her glasses. The teen sighed and got out her homework, hoping to take her mind off the awful message. After all, it was just a one-time thing, no different from the rude remarks she received every now and again. Right?
Wrong.
For the remainder of the week, April's phone was blown up with DM's and texts from various classmates and random students, though how they got her number was a mystery. Some of these kids weren't people April could ever remember interacting with. Yet they all seemed awfully eager to send harassing and/or just plain cruel messages like everyone else.
'Weirdo Magnet'
'Creepy'
'No one likes you'
'Guillable a$$'
'Weirdo Magnet'
'Such a weirdo'
'You're so dumb'
'Weirdo Magnet'
'Can't believe we have to go to school with a freak like you'
'Ur the one who messed up the school dance, right?'
'Velma Wannabe, chasing ghosts with ur imaginary friends'
'Weirdo Magnet'
…yeah not a fun week for April O'Neil.
New Ending: Unlocked
Not that she'd ever tell the guys about it.
It was easy enough to act normal over text and the occasional phone call she'd received throughout the week.
Or so she thought.
Unfortunately, her attempts at pretending everything was fine weren't going as well as she thought it was.
The boys could be weirdly observant when it came to April.
ーーーーー
Especially Leo.
He thought his conversation with April was odd, especially when she spaced out and came up with some lame excuse to end the call, and was highly suspicious. His suspicions only increased the next day when April asked the guys not to call until she was in the courtyard.
And April never sat in the courtyard, unless one of the Caseys visited, mostly because Cassandra was known to pick fights and Junior wasn't great with crowds.
Leo wasn't the only one who thought April was acting weird. But try as they might, the brothers had no idea why their friend/sister wasn't herself that week.
Mikey suggested they should just try to act like nothing was wrong and then make Friday night's movie marathon a relaxing and fun night for April so maybe she would feel like talking about what was wrong.
But then things escalated before Friday even came.
On Wednesday, April once again waited until she was in the courtyard before calling Mikey, as the youngest had insisted she needed to hear about how Donnie's latest invention had blown up spectacularly. And, of course, they all had to be on speakerphone.
"It was so funny," Mikey laughed, as Donnie tried to interrupt with a 'That is a complete fabrication, Angelo', and 'Stop laughing, April!'
Raph sighed and shook his head at the younger siblings as Leo just smirked, waiting to interject with a good joke as April giggled.
Then a couple of things happened all at once.
Leo heard April's laughter cut off abruptly.
April cried out "Hey! Give it back!"
The sound of someone fumbling with the phone could be heard through the speaker of Mikey's phone.
Then, an unfamiliar male voice spoke.
"Ha, pretending to have friends again?" The voice said, which caused Mikey and Raph to look at one another in confusion while Leo and Donnie exchanged a worried glance.
Leo hesitantly opened his mouth to ask who this was only to be cut off by a second voice, a girl this time who sounded downright obnoxious.
"Aw, does the freak want her phone back? Wanna act like you've actually got someone to talk to?" The girl asked in a mocking tone. "We all know your only friend was that Sunita girl, and she switched schools, probably to get away from the Weirdo Magnet."
Oh-ho-ho, that was the wrong thing to say.
"That's it!" Leo exclaimed, snatching the phone as his brothers glared at it.
"Wait, Mark there's actually someone on the other line!" The girl said in a hushed tone.
"Damn right, there is. You and 'Mark' better listen up because we're only saying this once," Leo hissed, gesturing for his brothers to come closer so they could all be heard.
They were going to make sure these two random strangers learned what a terrible idea it was to mess with the Hamatos' big sister.
ーーーーー
April was pretty sure she'd never been so humiliated in her life.
All she wanted was to talk to her brothers and hear what shenanigans they were getting up to when her history classmates Mark and Jenny came up to her and took her phone right out of her hand!
Mark raised it to his ear and smirked at her while Jenny smiled smugly, both of them stepping out of reach every time April tried to grab her phone back.
As if that wasn't bad enough, the guys were still on the phone. They could hear everything those jerks were saying.
Now, April O'Neil is usually not easy to embarrass (goodness knows how many times the boys had embarrassed her enough times to help build an immunity against it) but even she couldn't help but tear up as she noticed all the other kids in the courtyard were watching the whole scene unfold.
She sent a little prayer to the Pizza Supreme that either the boys hung up (highly unlikely) or the bullies hung up (also unlikely) just so she didn't have to explain all the stuff that had been happening that week to four very protective ninjas.
Luck was not on her side as one of the boys apparently said something, catching Jenny's attention. Her and Mark pressed their ears by the phone so they could hear whatever was being said.
April watched in stunned disbelief as the two other teens grew paler and paler, a terrified expression growing. They seemed to get more and more freaked out until either the boys stopped talking or Mark and Jenny were too scared to keep listening. Jenny tossed the yellow-clad teen back her phone before both teens ran off, leaving a very confused April behind.
She hesitantly pulled the phone to her ear.
"Uh, what did you guys say to them? They seemed kinda…terrified," April said. She heard some snickering from the boys and geez did that make April worry about their response.
"Just let them know they weren't being very nice, that's all," Raph replied. But his voice sounded a little too amused for that to be the actual truth.
"All that you need to know is they won't be messing with you again," Donnie added. "Also, I may have hacked into your phone, with the sole intention of finding out who had taken your phone using the camera, but I came across some very distressing texts and DMs you neglected to inform us about."
April groaned, earning herself a tsk from Leo.
"We are so talking about this when you come over on Friday," Leo warned her. "But for right now, don't worry about them or anyone else. We've taken care of them."
"How?"
"Well, for starters, I have taken the liberty of deleting all of those horrible texts, all of which contained false content regarding to your character," Donnie responded. April smiled at the obvious attempt at comfort, which was the best April was gonna get from the genius. "I also created a program that automatically blocks people who make new accounts with the same phone or use certain words in their messages to you."
April sighed in relief; she hated all of the constant notifications, and blocking all of the users was taking up too much of her time as it was.
"Dr. Delicate Touch may or may not have had a few words to as well," Mikey said a little too gleefully. "His associate, Dr. Feelings, will be paying you a visit over the weekend when you're here."
"I guess I deserve that. Seriously though, thanks guys," April said, feeling a warmth in her chest, thinking of how much she loved her brothers and how much they cared about her. "I didn't want to bother any of you, but…well, I guess it's only fair that I tell you the whole story on Friday. If you really don't mind hearing about my drama."
"Hey," Leo sounded serious, a rare event that April hardly ever witnessed. "We got you, sis. What these guys did wasn't cool and you don't deserve it. Any of it."
"We'd do anything for you, Riri," Raph churred, and the familiar sound made April feel safe like it always did. "And I hope you know that, in case something like this happens again,"
"Yeah. I do," April felt tears welling in her eyes and she blinked them away as the conversation turned into something more light-hearted, continuing the story about Donnie's failed invention.
She felt more like herself than she had all week and couldn't wait for Friday. A weekend with her brothers was exactly what she needed.
April hadn't been sure if she would have to deal with any more messages or harassment while she waited for the school week to be over, but she'd worried for nothing.
No one said much of anything to her when she came back to school. She might've gotten the occasional glance her way or had people move away from her as she walked through the halls, but no one had anything to say to her.
If they had to interact with April, her classmates were extremely respectful, being polite as they got their schoolwork done. People seemed to panic a little whenever they were paired up with her and even looked a little afraid sometimes.
The boys had been tightlipped about whatever they said to Mark and Jenny, but whatever it was got not only them, but everyone to leave April alone.
As curious as she was, April knew better than to look a gift horse in the mouth. She would simply wait to see how long this peace would last.
If there was one thing she had learned in all of April's years of knowing the turtles, it was that sometimes, it was better not to question things and just go with the flow.
April loved her brothers, and while the name 'Weirdo Magnet' sounded like an insult from her classmates, she was happy to hear it from her brothers. After all, if she didn't naturally attract weirdness, she wouldn't have met the boys in the first place.
And they were pretty awesome. Usually.
AN:
Donnie: are we ever going to tell her about how we threatened everybody who'd said something and blackmailed them into treating April with actual decency?
Leo: Of course not. You know what she'd say; 'you can't go around threatening my classmates because they were mean to me'
Raph: You really think she'd say that?
Mikey: Knowing her, probably. Humans are weird.

Comment that inspired this chapter:
Idea - "One of her classmates takes April's phone while she's on call with one of the guys and gets a thorough death threat if they ever mess with April again. Which is actually funny because I envisioned Leo saying that, like he was when he took her phone."
I tried to incorporate stuff from the original first chapter as well as a couple of things from chapter 2 that I felt really went well with the plot.
Btw I appreciate any and all story ideas. I think this is the end of this story but I've got more ideas in mind for the series! Hope you enjoyed this final chapter.
- Kitkat Out!
