Izuku didn't know what to do with the truth bomb Shoto gave him for why Shoto doesn't use his fire quirk but didn't have time to think of one as the last of the sports festival began.
The next part was a one-on-one fight and unfortunately Izuku was up against Hitoshi who Izuku knew could brainwash someone if they responded to him. So Izuku's plan was simple, don't respond. Which despite Hitoshi's best efforts, Izuku did. Izuku simply threw poised apples at him until Hitoshi jumped out of the way of one, Izuku immediately took the chance and put a mirror at an angle where he's about to land. Sending Hitoshi out of the ring.
It was time for the battle Izuku wasn't looking forward to, him vs. Shoto, luckily Izuku had a plan both for defeating Shoto and helping Shoto with his fire quirk. The battle begins and Shoto tries to freeze Izuku in place like he did with his last opponent but it doesn't work because every time he tries Izuku mirror jumps out of the way then melts the ice with poised apples. It was like this for a while until Izuku says "Your fire quirk is whatever you make out of it, it's yours." This causes Shoto to remember why he wanted to become a hero which gives him the peace to finally use his fire quirk, which he does. He tries to blast Izuku with his fire quirk only for Izuku to bounce it right back with the mirror. Shoto easily puts out the fire with his ice quirk which he also uses to attack Izuku. Unfortunately Shoto putting out the fire with ice made a smoke screen so Izuku couldn't see the ice attack and was frozen as an result causing Shoto to win the round.
