"Jaune I don't know I can make it more clear, I'm just not interested in you that way."
"Aww come on Weiss, even as friends?"
"Jaune…" Weiss said with a pained voice. He was nice and all and she felt bad having to turn him down without really explaining why, but she was way too embarrassed to admit just how hard she was crushing on Neptune. "There's just someone else I'd rather go with."
Jaune sighed in defeat. "Okay okay, I get it." He turned to walk to his dorm. "I hope he asks you to the dance then. Have fun," he said, opening the door to his dorm. It wasn't a long walk.
"How'd it go?" asked Pyrrha.
"Predictably."
"I'm sorry to hear that Jaune…" she was ecstatic.
"I guess I really do need to get over her huh?"
Pyrrha's eyes lit up. "Yes, I suppose that would be the healthy thing to do." She tried very hard not to let the joy in her mind make it her lips, she needed to seem sympathetic.
"But then who will I go to the dance with?"
"Well I'm sure there are some people you know that haven't been asked yet. Maybe someone with red hair?"
Jaune paused for a minute to think. "Of course! I'm sure Ruby doesn't have a date yet. She barely leaves her dorm. Thanks Pyrrha, I bet it'll make her week." He ran back over to Weiss's dorm.
"You're welcome." She sighed.
"At least he didn't think of me this time, that's progress right?." Chimed in Nora.
Jaune knocked on the door to team RWBY's room and Weiss opened it again. "Jaune i already told you-"
Jaune put a hand on her face and pushed her out of the way."Yeah yeah someone else whatever. Hey Ruby wanna go to the dance together?"
Ruby looked up from her homework. "As your date? But I thought you wanted to date Weiss."
"No just as friends, Weiss already turned me down enough, and it's more fun to go with someone than alone right?"
"I'm right here you know." Weiss tried to interject, moving Jaune's hand off her face.
"Sure Jaune, but you better not ditch me to hit on Weiss."
"RUBY!"
"I won't, see you later," he said, waving goodbye and closing the door. Ruby smiled happily, pleased that she could help her friend. Weiss stared blankly, unable to process the events she witnessed. Over her? What did he mean by that?
Jaune let Ruby hold his shoulder as the walked towards the gym.
"Stupid heels. Stupid balance. Stupid getting caught in the cracks." Ruby grumbled.
"My sisters say you get used to it eventually."
"Why can't I just wear my boots like normal."
"Don't ask me, I don't care what you're wearing."
"The things I do for Yang." she complained as the two walked through the doors.
"OOOOOOO YOU LOOK SO CUTE!" Yang rushed over to her sister and gave her a big hug.
"can't... breathe... world... going dark…" Ruby squirmed for freedom under her sister's grip.
Yang let her sister go and looked at Jaune. "You better not ditch her to hit on Weiss."
"I'm not going to do that, I'm over her."
"Yeah right," said the sisters simultaneously.
"No really I mean it. I've accepted that she just doesn't feel that way about me."
"I'll believe it when I see it." Joked Yang, playfully punching Jaune on the shoulder. "You two have fun, don't step on her toes Jaune."
"I don't think it's my feet we need to worry about here."
"Hey I'm new to these."
"I don't judge." He said, holding this hands up as if to surrender.
The two walked deeper into the gym. Some people were dancing, some were awkwardly standing around, and there looked to be a line building on one wall of the gym. Ruby looked over and saw cookies on the punch table, zooming across the dance floor with her semblance to get a good place in line. Jaune ran after her, not wanting to ditch Ruby so close to her sister. Yang laughed as she watched them. Classic Ruby.
As the party went on Jaune and Ruby talked about classes and their childhoods. It had been a while since they had been able to hang out just the two of them. Jaune told Ruby about how his sisters made him help them practice for their school dances, and how by the time he was 14 he was already a better ballroom dancer than anyone close to his age. Ruby told him how she was turned away at her dance at signal because they wouldn't let her wear her hood in, and how Yang and her went out and got ice cream instead. Eventually the inflow of people had stopped and the punch lines had quieted down. That meant the real dancing could begin. The school band had the 'honor' of playing the first waltz. Jaune got up and offered a hand to Ruby. She didn't really want to dance, but she figured she should at least try it. It would make Yang happy.
The pair walked to the dance floor and the waltz began. Jaune helped Ruby along with the movements, and while she did step on his toes a few times, after a minute they were in a rhythm.
"Wow Jaune, you really are good at this."
"Hey what's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing nothing, just that your footwork in sparring isn't half this good."
"Well my sisters didn't want to be huntresses."
The two shared a laugh as Weiss looked on jealously. Why wouldn't Neptune go to the dance with her? She was alone at the dance and Jaune was 'over her' whatever that meant. Even Blake had a date. Did Blake even have friends? She was an heiress, at least someone should've asked her out.
Weiss sat alone and watched her friends dancing for several songs until Jaune left Ruby to chase after Pyrrha. Of course he was ditching Ruby. Probably wanted to ask Pyrrha for advice on how to win Weiss over. Poor Pyrrha. Ruby seemed happy though, she was smiling and walking over to punch table. Of course she was going for cookies. Classic Ruby.
Weiss walked up to Ruby in the punchline.
"You actually went to the dance with him?" She asked, almost confrontational in tone.
Ruby jumped back, startled, almost splashing Weiss with purple punch. "AAAAA Weiss, don't sneak up on me like that, I don't have my fighting shoes on."
"Has he talked about me?" Weiss continued, ignoring the near destruction of her dress.
"What?"
"Jaune you dolt! Has he talked about me tonight?" Weiss's voice rose in frustration.
"No not really, expect when Yang told him not to hit on you tonight."
"That's none of her business," Weiss muttered. "Not even a single remark? Not even wondering who I went with?"
"Not a word. Did you go with anyone? I haven't seen you on the dance floor."
"That's not important." Weiss blushed, embarrassed.
Jaune ran past the pair. "Sorry Ruby I have to do something I promise I'm not going to hit on Weiss," he explained before bolting out the door.
"He didn't even see me," Weiss whined.
Ruby giggled. "Are you jealous?"
"No! Why would I be jealous? How dare you?!"
Ruby laughed harder. "Oh my gosh you are. You like Jaune you like Jau-"
Weiss put her hand over Ruby's mouth and pulled her aside.
"Don't say that so loudly. So what if I am?"
"Why didn't you say yes then? He asked you out so many times."
"Why did YOU say yes? Anyone with half a brain could tell I was just playing hard to get."
"Weiss I don't know what that even means. Does this have anything to do with you not getting a date tonight?"
"No."
"Weiss," Ruby put a hand on her friend's shoulder, "I'm your partner, you can tell me anything."
"A little," she blushed.
"Weiss you don't need some boy to go with you to the dance to be cool."
She teared up a little. "I've never gotten to go to a dance with someone before. Dad always made me go alone to 'maintain my purity' or whatever."
Ruby hugged her friend. "Want me to dance with you?"
"What? Ruby I want to dance with a boy... No offense."
"Then what about Neptune?"
"Nep-" Weiss was cut off as Neptune put a hand on her shoulder.
"Sorry for earlier." he said looking down in embarrassment. "Is there any chance I can still have a dance with you?"
Ruby looked at her teammate encouragingly.
"Only if you explain why you're here now." She pouted.
"WellIWasScaredToSayYesBecauseICantDanceButJauneSawMeWhileHeWasLeavingAndToldMeIWasACowardAndThatYouHadReallyBeenLookingForwardToThisAndThatIneededToTryEvenIfIFellOnMyFaceAndIFeltBadSoNowImHere"
Weiss took a moment to collect her thoughts. If it wasn't for Ruby there was no way she'd have been able to understand him. Jaune was actively helping someone else get with her. Why did that make her so mad? Should she dance with Neptune just to make him jealous? Maybe she should just forgive Neptune. He was cute. As she was ran through the options in her mind Jaune walked back inside the gym. A chorus of laughs echoed through the hall as everyone saw what he was wearing. A dress. And heels.
She watched as he walked up to Pyrrha (another girl that wasn't Weiss, what gives) and offered her his hand for a dance. Fine. If he was gonna be that way then she'd move on too. She looked at Neptune.
"Fine, I guess I can forgive you. But you better not step on my feet."
"Really? Thank you so much." Neptune breathed a sigh of relief before looking over his shoulder and giving Jaune a thumbs up. Boys. Ugh.
Weiss spent the night coaching Neptune through the moves, but he really was hopeless. She understood why he was so scared. She kinda felt bad for him. Meanwhile Jaune was doing dips and twirls with Pyrrha and Ruby. She was glad that they were having fun. Where did she go wrong? It should be her in those big, ripped arms of his. He really looked good in a dress too. Too good. Maybe he was gay? That had to be it. Poor Pyrrha. She'd have to tell her the bad news after the dance. Or maybe tomorrow. She didn't want to ruin her friends night. She had already ruined hers, no one else deserved that.
