Hey folks! Thanks for the reviews so far, I certainly appreciate the feedback. Each additional review only increases my excitement to write, so please don't hesitate to drop a few words if you feel motivated!
In reference to the questions about class/job levels: yes, I will address this in a few chapters. I have an outline going about 15 chapters out right now, and can affirm I have some plans for the assigning of additional levels for both the NPCs Ainz edits and Ainz's character himself.
If there are grammar/spelling mistakes, let me know (politely...) and I'll do my best to correct them!
That said, on with the show!
Momonga was perplexed.
He'd spent hours going through the coding tutorials and tools afforded by his developer-esque wish, and kept coming up with a question that wasn't explicitly addressed. It had been on his mind ever since he realized the mobs spawned in the arena dropped items and loot (even a low-tier raid boss from the early days of YGGDRASIL that he could confidently solo).
'Is it possible to spawn in World Items? Especially the ones that were gacha drops and not obtainable by raids or boss drops?'
He was currently in the throne room pouring over the code samples while he let his mind wander. 'I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. After all, the items have to have a spawning mechanic in some fashion even through the lottery system, and I have total control within Nazarick right now. World Items aren't a separate entity type from regular items, they just have insanely rare drop rates and crazy high capabilities.'
His mind made up for a test, Momonga used his Staff to make a simple, if ornate, chest to the side of the throne. 'This could just be like those mods in the older games before Dive-VR, where the base game isn't changed and only a new aspect is added,' he thought as he worked through the code for the intended effect.
It took him over an hour to get any success, an hour that had slowly sapped his motivation to continue the project. Still, no one becomes a top-tier player in YGGDRASIL without being able and willing to grind through any challenge, and that's exactly what happened here.
A flash of light suddenly surrounded the chest, and Momonga stopped dead (ironic for a massive skeleton…) in what he was doing to approach the gold-gilded container. 'Was I able to do it?' he wondered as he let his avatar access the chest's inventory with trepidation.
The contents therein had him actually let out a whoop of joy from his seat in his apartment, causing a neighbor to bang on the wall to get him to quiet down. A single item was held in the chest, a small unassuming map simply known as 'Atlas'. In broader detail it was a World Item that his clan (even before becoming Ainz Ooal Gown) had lost to a rival crew, and that loss had rankled the founding members even until their last days of playing.
Atlas wasn't the most complex of World Items: it was essentially a super-tier divination spell that could be used by any class for a total of ten minutes per day with no cost or penalty. Nine's Own Goal had used Atlas to avoid the worst of the PK raids in their early days, and though it wasn't as potent an item for an established guild it was still an incredible find.
'I don't believe it!' Momonga thought with absolute glee. He pulled out the map, before stepping back and waiting with bated breath. A few minutes passed, and at the five-minute mark the chest once again flashed with the same signal that an item had been deposited in its inventory. Another whoop was had, another series of knocks on his apartment walls, and he opened the chest again to see a replica of the World Item currently sitting in his character's inventory.
'I made a World Item spawner!' Momonga let himself indulge a bit and used every dance and celebratory emote and action his avatar had access to. 'Nothing's stopping me from setting up the Archives now, and I can use any World Items in the guild treasury without guilt because I can just get a new one once I've established a spawning chest for that specific item!'
He knew the code did limit him to one World Item per chest, but this gave him the excuse needed to test out a feature he'd been itching to utilize since he first made his dying wish. As eager as he was to edit the NPCs, himself, or items within Nazarick, he couldn't wait to change the floors and vaults of the Great Tomb to add a host of features that, quite frankly, the former state of Nazarick didn't have space to accommodate.
With a light heart and easy smile, Momonga teleported to the treasury of Nazarick for the second time in as many days. However, in this case, instead of taking things from the treasury he had every intention to add to it in what would otherwise be a game-breaking way in other circumstances.
Momonga made an additional hall off of the entrance, taking some liberties in copy-pasting data from the previous setup to speed up his efforts. Whereas the former treasury housed all the guild's World items, the former members' gear, and a substantial amount of communal gold (the primary use these days was simply to finance the upkeep of Nazarick, which would last much longer than the month left before it would even make a dent. Momonga was many things, and chief among them was a shrewd budgeter that had saved Ainz Ooal Gown from their own ambition on more than one occasion). Now, he separated the treasury into a proper treasury for the gold and, once he got around to it, individual spawner chests for every World item or near-World Item class object within YGGDRASIL, while the new addition would become the Archives, a testament to the former members and the adventures had by Nine's Own Goal and later Ainz Ooal Gown over the past decade.
The salaryman spent hours in his guise of an undead adding intricate and loving details to the space. It was well lit by torches and lightly-glowing rock for its exhibits, keeping an easy atmosphere while maintaining a level of respect and dignity worthy of any high-class museum (not that he'd experienced that IRL aside from pictures and VR tours, those kinds of things were reserved for the super-rich at this point in Earth's history). Each and every guild member had their own podium, with a golem equipped with their common-use gear. Several members had multiple golems—such as Touch-Me, Ulbert, Peroroncino, Tabula, and a few others—to represent favorite outfits and gear sets for holidays and specific PvP or PvE events.
The last member also took time to make the golems true NPCs of Nazarick: each one was brought to level 100 and gifted the same base-class levels as the members themselves. He made the effort to add backstory to each one that they were imprints of the former members, with distant memories and base habits of those who had come before. None were active, but in the case any intruder made their way to the Archives (all but impossible now that the guardians were over-levelled) they could activate and lay waste in a way that only a guild of heteromorphic maxed-out players were capable of.
After establishing the player golems, Momonga took some time to put in 3D interactive exhibits with some of his favorite (and even a few of his least favorite but still important) moments in YGGDRASIL and specifically Ainz Ooal Gown's history. Touch-Me's championship in the World Tournament, Ulbert's ascension to World Disaster, Momonga's own troubles with PKing groups early game, and dozens of others all captured in the surreal detail characteristic to a Dive-VR supported game.
At the end of his session, he was tired but extremely satisfied with his work for the day. He dreaded going back to work in the morning (only 4 hours away at this point, not that he cared overly much for sleep anymore), but this set the stage for several of his other plans for Nazarick in the coming month. He knew he'd have access to essentially unlimited World Items, and felt he'd done himself and his friends proud by establishing the Archives to document their adventures in a final way.
'And who knows,' he thought to himself as he took one last glance of the modified treasury, spawners and exhibits and all, 'perhaps they'll have a YGGDRASIL 2 and let people import data! I don't know if I'll still be around, but I'm sure someone will see this and that is enough for right now.'
With that, he logged out and crawled over to bed for a few much-needed hours of sleep. Morpheus took him only moments later, but for perhaps the first time since he had gotten the diagnosis:
Momonga felt peace.
So there it is! This represented a major divergence for me: both versions of Ainz from canon and my work value YGGDRASIL above all, but in my case he's influenced by his own limited time IRL and is more interested in making a great legacy rather than wallowing in the negative emotions the shutdown would otherwise dictate. This also sets the stage for future terrain/floor changes (more like additions, because he doesn't want to alter what he and his friends had initially created) in the future chapters.
Speaking of, I've got about 15 chapters outlined at the moment, and just need to keep finding time to get them written out for you all! I appreciate every view and review; watching those numbers go up is the best motivation and I can't describe how excited I am each morning to wake up and see how many folks read the story while I was asleep. I don't want to give things away, but again I'll say expect a non-canon Ainz before reaching the new world, as well as tweaks all over the place within Nazarick. That's the point of fanfic though, right? To bring the 'what-if?' changes into a new form for other people to experience.
Anyways, thanks for reading, and catch you on the next chapter!
