A boy sits alone in a vacant building surrounded by police cars. The darkness outside amplifies the brightness of the flashing red and blue lights.
"You are surrounded," a voice says over the sound of pouring rain. "Step outside the building with your hands above your head."
The boy sits against a pillar with his hand on his stomach covering a bleeding wound. He did this to me, the boy thinks. The man in the suit did this. Akino did this to me. The boy has dark green hair, white gloves stained by blood, and wears a black hoodie. Why did this have to happen to me, why couldn't I have a happy life? the boy wonders. The boy stops breathing and his body freezes in place.
—-—-5 years earlier—-
"Stop it Kacchan!" A boy cries as he gets beaten up. The boy has green hair and freckles. He is repeatedly punched by a boy with blond hair. They are in a public park with a small playground and swing set.
"Why should I?" The other boy responds.
"Please stop!" The green haired boy cries.
"You're a useless person, you don't even have a quirk. Why do you even exist? I'm doing the world a favor by beating you up."
"It's not my fault I don't have a quirk!" After giving the boy several bruises the blond boy stops.
"That's your beating for the day. See you tomorrow, loser!" The blond haired boy sneers as he walks away.
The green haired boy ran out of the park crying, the tears filling his green eyes. He runs through streets until he ends up in a dark alley between two abandoned warehouses. Trash and drops of oil litter the pavement. The boy slides down the side of a building, watching as a few fat drops of rain fall. Before long, it's pouring and the boy curls up to keep warm.
"Why?" he asks. "Why couldn't I have a quirk?" He sits against a building crying until he can't cry anymore. The boy looks up as he hears a piece of trash skid across the pavement.
"H-hello, anyone there?" the green haired boy whispers.
A man in a suit steps into the alley. He has no eyes and wears a metal mask that covers his mouth.
"Hello." The man says in a robotic voice.
"Who are you?" The boy asks fearfully.
"Simply a man who wishes to offer some help," the man responds. "What is your name?" The man is heavily built but does not loom over the boy.
"I-I'm Izuku."
"What a nice name."
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm just here for an appointment."
"But there are no doctors here."
"I'm here to meet up with a doctor so that we can go somewhere. I can ask the same of you, what are you doing here?"
"I ran away"
"Why?"
"Because I was getting bullied for not having a quirk," Izuku says depressed.
"Hahaha, are you really quirkless?"
"I-I am."
"Well, you're in luck because I can help you."
"How can you help me?"
"I can give you what you want. A quirk."
"Really?"
"Yes, I can. All you have to do is yell my name when you need help," The man tells him, "My name is Akino."
"Why would you do this?"
"Because I don't like to see children crying. Now, do you want a quirk or not?"
"I do."
"Then make sure to yell my name!"
"O-ok. Akino." Izuku said the name tentatively, as if trying it out.
"Good. Now give me your hand."
Izuku holds his hand out for the man to grab. As soon as Akino touches his hand Izuku feels something being pulled from him before something unnatural enters his body, something dark. As Izuku comes to his senses he's hit with an overwhelming amount of tiredness. He realizes that he can't hear the sound of the rain or the cars passing by. It's as if he's gone deaf.
"W-what did you do to me?" Izuku stutters as blackness starts to cover his vision.
"You must be overwhelmed by receiving a quirk."
"Wh-what?" Izuku whispered as he fell on the pavement unconscious.
A couple hours later Izuku awoke to the sound of his mom's voice. His head lays on her lap. After gaining full consciousness he stands up and looks around. He sees that he's still in the same alley. He is surrounded by police officers who are speaking on the radio.
"What happened?" Izuku asks.
"You didn't come home so I started to look for you and when I couldn't find you I called the police," his mom, Inko tells him.
"We just got another call, we will leave you to talk to your son!" A police officer shouts.
"Ok, thank you so much," Inko calls back. "Never do that again Izuku, I was worried sick!"
"I'm sorry mom. I just was upset that I didn't have a quirk."
"I know it must be hard not having a quirk in this world that we live in, but still you can't run away!"
"Ok, I'm sorry."
"Now let's go home. We can order from your favorite restaurant."
The next day, Sunday, Izuku wakes up energized. He can feel something within him and realizes that it really is a quirk! And he is ready to use his quirk. He quickly eats breakfast and goes to the nearby park to try out his quirk. After multiple tries he still can't use his quirk so he takes a quick break.
"Look at this loser," a boy with blond hair named Katsuki Bakugo says as he walks by with his friends.
"Hi Kacchan," Izuku responds.
"What are you doing?" Bakugo asks.
"I'm trying to unlock my quirk."
"But you don't have one," Bakugo says, perplexed. "Look at this quirkless loser thinking he has a quirk!"
The kids with Bakugo start to laugh at Izuku.
"Shut up Kacchan," Izuku replies, irritated. After yesterday, he just wants to be left in peace.
"What did you say to me Deku!?" Bakugo angrily says. "I think we need to teach this quirkless shit a lesson!"
Bakugo walks towards Izuku while making small explosions in his hands.
"Stop!" Izuku cries, as he pushes Bakugo away. At that moment Izuku feels an unusual amount of hatred for Bakugo. All his negative emotions bubble up in his stomach and burst like a volcano. Bakugo is sent flying into the air and lands on his butt. Instantly after the burst of negative energy Izuku is hit with a wave of tiredness.
"Ow!" Bakugo shouts as he gets up. "Oh, you're in for a beating." Bakugo rushes at Izuku and proceeds to beat him up while a kid with long fingers holds Izuku down.
"Stop!" Izuku cries in pain.
"No."
Izuku again feels an unnatural amount of hatred for Bakugo and just wants to make him suffer.
"I said stop it!" As Izuku shouts the command, Bakugo suddenly freezes.
"What just happened?" A kid with wings who was just laughing at Izuku asks.
"I-I don't know," Izuku responds, shocked.
A lot of the hate Izuku was feeling has gone away and he was hit with another wave of tiredness. Instantly, Bakugo comes back to his senses and starts to run at Izuku ready to fight. Izuku's feelings of hatred return but, this time, he decides to run away. He shakes off the long fingers, and runs. As he runs he notices that he's running twice as fast as he usually runs and that the more he runs the less negative emotions he feels, it was as if the negative emotions power his ability. He eventually makes it home and bursts through the front door.
"What's wrong Izuku?" his mom asks.
"Nothing," he responds. He runs to his room as fast as he can and shuts the door. What did I just do? Izuku wonders to himself. Oh wait, Akino told me to shout his name whenever I needed his help and I forgot to, Izuku remembers. I'll do it next time, Izuku promises himself. Except he probably doesn't want to be bothered by kids fighting.
But he sort of knows how his new quirk works. That's a development and he's proud of himself for working it out. Izuku practices conjuring and releasing negative emotion for the rest of the day until he falls asleep in his room.
The following day Izuku wakes up and starts to get ready for school. School is his least favorite part of the day because he gets bullied.
"Good morning, Mom!" Izuku calls out as he enters the kitchen.
"Good morning, Izuku. How did you sleep?"
"I slept fine."
"Guess what."
"What?"
"After school I'm going to take you to the mall and we can go buy the new All Might figurine."
"Really?"
"Yes, I don't have work today."
"Thanks Mom," Izuku says as he hugs his mom.
"You're welcome."
Izuku looked forward to going to the mall. The new All Might figurine looked the best according to Izuku and had the best features. Izuku had a great day at school because Bakugo and his friends weren't there and he didn't get bullied at all. Izuku also had lots of tests and aced them all.
"I'm back!" Izuku shouts as he enters his house after school.
"Great," his mom responds, "Time to go to the mall."
"Yay," Izuku says excitedly. At the mall Izuku and his mom browse through stores trying to find the new figurine. Eventually they found a store that had the action figure in stock.
"Is that the new Hawks action figure?" Izuku asks the kid in front of him.
"Yeah, Hawks is my favorite hero." The kid replies. He has black hair and wears a red hoodie. "Who is your favorite hero?"
"I like All Might the most."
"Cool."
"What's your name?" Izuku asks.
"Ren Hiroshina, what's yours?"
"Izuku Midoriya."
"Cool, what's your quirk?"
"I don't know exactly, but I do know that it requires negative emotions," Izuku whispers into Ren's ear, not wanting his mom to hear.
"Awesome! I can manipulate electricity."
"Nice! Can I have your phone number?"
"Sure."
The two kids trade phone numbers and continue talking until they both get their action figures.
"Bye," the two kids say to each other.
"Let's go get dinner," Izuku's mom suggests.
"Ok!"
They walk to the food court and get in line for food. When they reach the front of the line the server asks what they want.
"I'll take Katsudon please," Izuku orders.
"Me too," says his mom.
After getting their food they start to walk to a table. Izuku accidentally bumps into a girl and spills his food all over her.
"I'm so sorry!" Izuku exclaims.
"I-It's fine," the girl responds.
"Let me go get some napkins," Izuku says, as he walks to get napkins. "Here," he says, offering her the napkins.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
"What's your name?"
"Izuku, what's yours?"
"Ochako."
While the two kids talk their parents are also having a conversation.
"I'm so sorry about this," Izuku mom says.
"Don't worry about it. I'm Rieko."
"I'm Inko. Nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too."
"Ok Izuku, let's go get new food for you to eat."
"Ok mom! One sec." Izuku and Uraraka quickly exchange contacts.
After buying new food Izuku and his mom eat and head home.
"Thanks for taking me, mom. It was really fun coming to the mall!"
"You're welcome, Izuku."
