"I can't believe we made it…" Yang murmured as she stepped forward, into the blistering heat of the desert, and just… Looked out on Vacuo, shaking her head in disbelief, only really aware of the heat and the smaller, calloused hand in her own. That hand squeezed hers and she turned, smiling at her partner, and said. "Together."
"Now what, though?" Weiss asked quietly, gesturing at the city. "We just… Walk in?"
"I have to find my team."
"I mean, yeah." Yang scoffed, smiling, "But that kinda involves, you know, going in?"
"I mean that's easy, right?" Jaune chuckled, "One step at a time and we'll get there eventually."
"Great advice." Yang rolled her eyes, smiling and flicking Blake a look, "I think he's a little rusty at this. Right, babe?"
"Oh Gods, Yang, come on…"
"Oi!" Jaune grunted, turning and pressing a hand against his breastplate. "I am rust free, thank you very much."
"We get in there, find Jaune's team, and find Winter." Ruby declared, stepping past them and turning to look over her shoulder, smiling brightly as the wind whipped by. "From there, we… Just help wherever we can. Right, guys?"
"Sounds like a plan, baby sis-" Yang was cut off by a flinch as the gate behind them snapped shut with a 'crack' like thunder, and the air in its place instantly 'whooshed' in a circle. Turning, she watched scarlet spin and undulate as the portal materialized. Her fists snapped up on instinct, and she hissed, 'Oh for fuck-"
"Yang!" Raven shouted as she ran through the portal, dressed in a loose robe and clutching her sword in a hand. Her hair was a wild mess behind her, but she didn't seem to care, wide eyes spinning to her and then around her in less than a second.
"What do you want, Ra-" The woman slammed into her before she could finish, sword left in the sand, and Yang stumbled back a step under the weight of the… Hug? Raven was hugging her? Stuttering her surprise, she said, "W-What-"
"I thought you were dead!" She gasped, pressing her face into the crook of Yang's neck and sucking in deep, almost hyperventilating, breaths. "One minute, you were there, and then suddenly you just- Vanished! Right off Remnant! I didn't even have time to-to react, to Portal, or-or anything!"
"I…" Shocked, Yang could only turn to look over at her partner, who just smiled and nodded at the woman. Swallowing through a sudden bout of anxiety, she wrapped her arms around the woman and explained, quietly, "We… Use the Relic to make a way to Vacuo. But… We fell off it on the way, a-and…"
"Fell through the world." Blake filled in, making Raven pull back to turn to her, brows furrowed in confusion. Shrugging, she chuckled, "Like… Like the story, yeah."
"The story…" Raven blinked, slowly, "You were in the-"
"Ever After." Ruby nodded, turning Raven's gaze back the other way, to meet the gentle glare she was giving her. "It took some doing, but… We made it out."
"Some of us took longer than others." Weiss muttered, "Right, Rusted Knight?"
"Please don't call me that…"
"Wait, just- Wait a second." Raven backed up, shaking her head as the Portal finally crackled shut behind her. Shaking her head, she pointed at them and asked, "You're… The Girl who Fell Through the World?"
"No, just their sequel." Weiss sighed, shaking her head when Raven scoffed. "It's… Complicated."
"I guess it would be…" Raven sighed, shaking her head, backing up, and smoothing her robe in a suddenly anxious motion. Pursing her lips, she asked, "Are you… Okay, Yang?"
"You care now, do you?"
"Yang!"
"No." Raven cut Blake off, waving a hand between them when the Faunus tried to say something. Smiling, she said, "I deserved that… But… I know I'm ont a good mother. I know that. But I just- I thought you died, Yang. I just… Need to know you're okay."
"I…" Yang paused, sighed… And let the anger go, backing up a step and reaching for Blake's hand. She took it and Yang relaxed, comforted by it, and finally gave her mother a long look. "I'm fine, Raven. It's been rough, sure, and… Stuff got messy. But I'm here, and aside from a freaking desperate need for a shower and a good night in bed-"
"Yang!"
"I know what I said." She smirked, flicking Blake a look to make sure she knew she'd been joking and only looking back to Raven when she scoffed and rolled her eyes. "I'm fine."
"That's… Good." Raven nodded and turned, kneeling to pick up her sword and standing to ask. "So… Should I take you to Qrow, then?"
"Won't that be awkward?" Yang asked, smirking, "Popping in to drop off the kids and then… What, buzzing back off to Mistral?"
"To get my gang, yes." Raven nodded, turning and paying Yang a thin smile. "I thought I actually lost you, Yang. If you're intent on running right off into war with Salem, then… Then I guess I don't have a choice but to help, right?"
"I…" Yang swallowed past the sudden cotton in her throat and scowled, "This doesn't make up for anything, Raven."
"I know." The woman answered, cutting across the air before her and sighing deeply. Wearily. Finally, without facing them, she said, "I thought… I'm bad at families. At domestic life. Summer was always better than me at it, so… But I thought I lost you. Both of you. And now…"
Raven stepped through the portal, her words lingering, "I'm done with the shit."
In the quiet left behind, Yang could only shake her head, confused, "What the hell was that?"
"I know, right?" Jaune groaned, turning and trudging off, towards distant Vacuo. "She forgot to send us to Ruby's uncle!"
Yang scoffed, rolled her eyes…
And turned to let her partner drag her, smiling, towards Vacuo.
