"Now I have become death, the destroyer of worlds..."
-Robert Oppenheimer, quoting the Hindu texts, 1945
Evil rises in many ways, taking many forms throughout history, finding ways to menace the world and all those who reside in it. Nature finds a way, a way to bring forth darkness, which is part of our lives as it co-exists with the light.
And the greatest evil of all can come from the depths below, threatening to bring us down. And our destruction can come by our own hands, through nuclear power!
We split the atom and unleashed a greater force of destruction the world had ever seen; the nuclear bomb, the power to annihilate civilization. One push of the button, that's all it takes, and the world as we know it can come to an end.
The dangers of nuclear power are known, in many frightening ways. Just as it is our ally, radioactivity and nuclear weaponry can be a force of evil...
It was a pitch black night, dark clouds blanketed the sky, and lightning exploded as the sea churned and a torrent of drops fell from the heavens. Half a mile away from Japanese shores, half a mile near the coast of Nagasaki, a fishing boat crawled its way through the sea, returning from its fishing voyage.
Lighting cracked, thunder boomed, and Mayalishiko Quuto'kayamo stared across the deck, seeing the lights of his hometown. His family was waiting for him, waiting to get a taste of the fish he'd reeled in before the storm hit.
A cold wind ripped at his face and he wrapped himself in a blanket, holding on as best he could while the waves impacted his vessel. He heard the explosion of thunder again, the crack of lightning and the roar of wind.
But then, he heard a new sound.
THOOM!
It couldn't be thunder or lightning, he checked everywhere on the ship, seeing what had fallen over. And then, he heard the noise again, lightning exploded and he looked over the side of the boat, seeing shadows appear in the water.
Then he saw a flash of light and turned, having expected it to be a patrol boat, but there was nothing close by. No, something had to be close by, other than...
Lightning exploded once more and Mayalishiko saw a flash in the water, then there was another, it wasn't a normal flash. Lights never flashed underwater, the waves churned more and more and the boat shuddered.
He cut the engines, leaving himself afloat in the sea. A cold chill crept up his back and he could feel terror, something was amiss. The spirits of the beyond couldn't be coming for him, the supernatural, demons, were only a legend despite what the religious said.
He noticed a glow, seeing more flashing lights and the ocean seemed to turn a bright shade of red as if the water was turning into lava. Steam rose up and his boat shuddered, the fish in the nets seemed to start steaming as well.
KRAKOOOOOOOM! More lightning exploded across the darkened cloudy sky, Mayalishiko felt the vessel shake violently beneath his feet and he shielded his eyes as the water seemed to explode around him.
Smoke rose from the back of the boat, it smelled like something had just melted the engines. More lights flashed and the boat creaked, he then heard another boom, a loud one at that.
Another flash of lightning and Mayalishiko felt his boat quake and gripped the stern to keep his footing as he heard cracking and felt a torrent of water pour down on him. A shadow loomed over and he heard an inhuman growl, something sinister, something far evil...
No, it was the fabled spirits of the beyond, he'd done something and angry spirits had come for him, hexing the ocean and lifting the boat in the air!
'Please have mercy...'
Mayalishiko turned and finally noticed that his ship was in the hands of something unspeakably evil, clawed fingers dug into the side, fire burned where the engine was, and he saw a spiked shoulder. A serpent's head with red eyes swayed in the dark, sporting dark-red spikes that may as well have been a beard.
He looked up and stared at the dark and scaly visage of the demon, the beast from below, a horned ear on each side of the head, blazing red-orange eyes pierced Mayalishiko's eyes, a mouth lined with razor sharp teeth and he could see dark-red spikes upon the monster's back, leading to the tip of the serpentine tail.
With his life flashing before his eyes, he stared into the face of the monster, it stood at the size of the highest mountain, taller than any building or cliff. In his youth, he'd heard the ancient tales of a beast that would rise from the ocean and bring destruction to mankind, the stories told throughout the ages, even during the war.
The tales spoke of a monster that held the capacity of bringing untold devastation, a beast with unspeakable power that could turn the ocean red, a beast who could devour all. The tales had a name, a frightening name, so many frightening names. The Hindu texts would certainly call him Death, the Destroyer of Worlds.
But there was one name, one name that had proven to be immortal through the ages, one that was more powerful than The Great Beast:
Gojira.
A God-Incarnate, an ancient being destined to bring forth the end times, said to be from an era long before the humans ruled, awakened by the fires of war. No, not just war, nuclear power!
Long had it been prophesized in obscure texts from obscure ancient religions that man would split the atom, paving the way for the ancient beast to arise a new, awakened from an ancient slumber by the war.
And split the atom many decades ago, man did. And thus, with the power of many nuclear explosions, the beast had risen, ready to bring destruction on ALL mankind.
And as it was prophesized in the old tales, the beast would rise on a stormy night.
He heard the roar of thunder and the crack of lightning one last time, Mayalishiko's ears opened to a new noise. The creature growled, opened its fanged jaws, and let out a deafening roar that shook the earth and shattered Mayalishiko's soul and eardrums.
The roar was reverberating, shaking the deck of the boat, a tremendous, powerful and mighty roar that reverberated from the beast's vocal cords.
Even the serpentine tail opened its jaw and roared along with its owner. The two beasts were one, the demon was the king, the King of Armageddon and Monsters.
Mayalishiko was stricken by fear, this night was his last. The beast's fingers wrapped around him and as the boat crumbled in flames, the fisherman was engulfed by the jaws of the apocalypse, the maw of Gojira.
The monster, the destroyer, the Kaiju devoured his meal and then turned his blazing eyes upon the city. He could hear the screams, the screams of many frightened souls. Now, it was time to destroy, civilization had no chance!
He opened his mouth again, a serpentine tongue shaking, as he roared menacingly.
Godzilla, Gojira, Daemonzilla, made landfall. Stepping onto the port, crushing the pier and smashing the ships beneath him. The ground cracked as the beast came ashore, metal melting from the radiation that emitted off of him.
Many people tried to run, only to be squashed as the foot came down. The beast roared again, his roar shattering the windows and the roofs of many buildings and houses.
Orange eyes gleamed with power and his dorsal plates gave off a bright red glow, glowing as bright as the sun until people were shielding their eyes and the intense heat melted away the nearest structure.
Godzilla opened his mouth wide and a ray of atomic fire, a might burst of energy, left his maw, concentrated on the entire vicinity.
A great explosion engulfed Nagasaki, ten times greater than the nuclear bomb blast that had impacted it and Hiroshima in 1945. Buildings were annihilated, wood burned to ash, and people screamed as their lives were stripped away.
Explosions ripped through the metropolis and the harbor, burning and disintegrating everything around the breather of the atomic fire.
Death, chaos, destruction, the ingredients of the apocalypse. In their last moments, the priests who saw the beast unleashing his destructive power prayed to the heavens, begging for mercy unto their souls. And along with the other unfortunate souls, the humble servants of The Lord were wiped away by the nuclear blast.
Lightning exploded and the terrifying Godzilla stomped through the smoldering ruins of Nagasaki, smashing the buildings that hadn't been caught up in the blast. Those who survived were either crushed or eaten.
The beast looked to the sky and saw the moon through the clouds, glowing as bright as the sun, Godzilla's jaws opened again and a burst of fire shot from his mouth into the air.
The tail opened its jaw and another stream of fire shot forth, the blazing ray of nuclear power burst through the clouds, causing evaporation, and made its way through the stratosphere, leaving the Earth's surface and streaking towards the moon.
Godzilla's fire struck the lunar surface, penetrating the crust until a great explosion ruptured the moon, obliterating an entire chunk of it from the dark side all the way to half the light side.
The rest of the celestial satellite became dark, unable to take much light from the sun due to the damage it had received, and the damage was irreversible. On the surface of the Earth, the moon's obliteration resulted in a loss of tides as the waves ceased and the oceans became still.
The beast lumbered through the mainland, leaving the ruins of Nagasaki behind, setting fire to the countryside and the mountains. Grass burned and the earth trembled, cracking beneath the weight of the eighty-story monster, while houses were laid to waste.
His gaze moved to the mountains, gazing at their peaks, and he fired his breath again, rupturing the hills. And the force of the blast lit up the nearest of mountains, an explosion of rock and fire lighting up the night as the mountain became a volcano of radioactive fire, spewing ash into the dark sky.
Godzilla marched on, trampling the trees, and his radioactive aura spread around him, affecting the earth and seeping into all living things.
Birds were squashed as their homes were crushed, many of them became caught up in the spread of radiation from the beast and perished in seconds, smoldering to death while some began to develop mutations and changed into hideous beasts.
Godzilla trampled through the Japanese hills, crushing villages and obliterating many in his path, his eyes aglow with immense power and his dorsal plates gleamed once more.
Godzilla charged up his energy, ready to unleash his apocalyptic power once again, and let loose a mighty blast from his maw, firing a haze of nuclear heat that burned and ravaged his surroundings, setting the world ablaze.
The beast roared and threw its head back towards the sky, relishing in the destruction. A great and menacing aura surrounded him, the beast growled and his image seemed to distort.
He ceased movement and growled, his dorsal plates gleaming brighter than ever. An earthshattering roar left Godzilla's maw and then, he split in two. Godzilla roared, his appearance glowing and simmering, and another beast in his likeness appeared, having grown out of him and sporting a similar sentient serpentine tail.
And thus, one became two. The beasts roared into the dark and laid waste to the world around them, destroying all in their path and bringing about the apocalypse that would ravage the universe. And on a dark night, Death had come...
The End
