** Chapter 1 **
Felix's heart was pounding as he stepped out of Ravenclaw tower, making sure the hallway was empty. It was late, the hallways were quiet, and he had ditched his flowing student uniform for darker, more traditional clothes. Felix was a slender Seventh Year Ravenclaw student with mousey looks, known for his sneaky nature among his peers.
As he worked his way through the school towards the Central Hall, he ducked behind a column as an Arithmancy Professor and first-year student walked by. The student was being escorted back to their common room by the stern woman, getting an earful the entire time.
"What were you doing out after 9 pm?" The professor admonished the student.
"I-I was just coming from dinner in the Great Hall, Professor," the first-year stammered.
"You know better than that! Hurry back to your dormitory, and don't let me catch you out past curfew again," the professor warned. She continued to lay into the poor first-year as they continued on.
After they passed, Felix continued down a candle-lit hallway, ducking into various passageways and hiding behind sculptures to avoid being seen. He had a mission to accomplish.
He was going to spy on The Hufflepuff Honeybees, the all-woman choir group currently on an unbroken three year streak of competition wins. Felix was a member of The Ravenclaw Crescendos, their biggest rival, and there was an important House choir competition next week. Felix had been convinced by his fellow choir members to spy on The Hufflepuff Honeybees as it was rumored that they were using Enhancement Charms to strengthen their vocal chords. If he could find evidence, they could get disqualified. The plan was to watch them practice at midnight in the Bell Tower.
Felix slowed as he crept towards the Central Hall, hearing voices coming from around the corner. He paused, pressing himself against the wall as he strained to listen. It was two Slytherin prefects, their voices echoing around the hall.
"Did you hear about the first-year who lost their wand his first week?" one of them said.
The other one chuckled. "No, what happened?"
"He's using a wooden branch to practice with until his mum sends him a new one." They both roared with laughter.
Felix's fear spiked as he worried about getting caught. He knew he couldn't risk confrontation. He also knew that Slytherin prefects were particularly vigilant, always on the lookout for opportunities to deduct points from rival houses.
With trembling hands, Felix reached into his pocket and retrieved the Invisibility Potion. It was a concoction made by Oliver, a Ravenclaw fourth-year who was a whiz at Potions and Herbology. Felix had asked for a double dose to ensure he remained invisible throughout the Honeybees' practice.
The voices grew closer. Felix swallowed the potion, gagging at the cold, syrupy taste, and waited for the effects to take hold. He felt his body grow cold, and watched as his skin slowly began to turn transparent.
With alarm, Felix realized the Invisibility Potion didn't affect his clothes and wand. His entire outfit appeared to float in thin air like a ghostly apparition. Thinking quickly, Felix stripped and stowed them away in a nearby display case, freezing in place as the prefects passed by. They were oblivious to his presence, and soon the coast was clear. He made a note to thank Oliver.
Making his way through the Central Hall undetected, Felix pressed on to the Bell Tower. He began to feel confident, happy that his weeks of planning were paying off. He had thought long and hard about the best way to catch the Honeybees. Uncovering a scandal of this size would be a huge reputation booster for him, as the Hufflepuff Honeybees were the most talented choir group in all of Hogwarts. He knew he couldn't just accuse them, though. That would be far too risky. Catching them in the act seemed like the best option.
He arrived at the Bell Tower entrance just minutes before midnight. Completely invisible and unnoticed by the ghosts and paintings around the room, he walked towards the large staircase leading to the chorus room. He shivered as the wind whistling through the windows hit him, his nakedness giving him no protection from the elements. He walked across the hall, headed for the staircase, and froze as a large door to his right opened. A group of second-years were headed indoors, carrying telescopes and binoculars, likely returning from a nighttime Astronomy lesson on the grounds.
Felix's heart raced as he realized he was completely exposed. If the second-years detected him, his plan would be over before it even began. The swarm of students bore down on him, cutting off any chance of getting out of the way. He shuffled back and forth to avoid them, narrowly missing connecting with a few of them.
As he tried to keep a low profile, Felix noticed one student who was particularly frustrated with his wand. The student was cursing and smacking it, causing small jets of blue light to shoot out intermittently. Felix continued to dodge the students, holding his breath with each close encounter.
As the student walked past Felix, following his classmates into the castle he slammed his wand against a stone railing angrily, causing a giant bolt to shoot out behind him from the faulty wand. Felix instinctively dodged, but he wasn't fast enough. The spell hit him square in the chest, and he instantly felt a tingling sensation all over his body.
The herd of students still failed to notice Felix, instead jeering at the student with the broken wand as they disappeared further into the school. Felix knew the spell: He had been hit with a Freezing Charm. Due to the wand's ineffectiveness, the Freezing Charm wasn't taking effect instantly, but gradually. Felix felt his limbs growing stiff as the spell slowly took hold of him. He knew he had to get to the chorus room before he became completely frozen and caught.
Felix struggled up the stairs to the chorus room, his legs feeling like they were turning to stone. As the stiffness spread, he had to resort to crawling, dragging himself up the remaining steps. Once inside, he scanned the room for a hiding spot, settling on a pile of cushions in the back corner. Collapsing into them, he felt a wave of relief wash over him. But it was short-lived. The Freezing Charm completed its hold on him, rendering him as stiff as a board and trapped among the cushions. He tried to move, but his body wouldn't budge, except for his eyes, which darted around the room in panic. He lay there for what felt like hours until he heard the light footsteps of the Hufflepuff Honeybees quartet climbing the stairs.
Even from his position in the back of the room, Felix had a clear view of the center of the room. He could see the Honeybees as they entered the room, holding hands and singing harmoniously. Leading the group was Bridget Murphy, the proud and confident section leader, with her golden hair tied back in a neat bun. Following behind her was Maeve O'Sullivan, a sharp-eyed brunette girl with a mischievous glint in her eyes. Next in line was Agnes Abernathy, a stout and sturdy girl with an impressive voice that could fill an entire room with sound. Bringing up the rear was Fiona Finnegan, the newest member of the quartet, a kind and happy-go-lucky redhead with clear blue eyes that sparkled in the light.
Frozen and invisible, Felix watched as they made their way to the center of the room, their voices blending together in perfect harmony, and he knew that his mission to uncover their alleged cheating would not be an easy one.
