Chapter 3: A Helping Hand

Chloe hated it, but every single morning Naruto woke up for a run. Which meant, SHE woke up. Not for a run per se but woke up because she was cuddling him, and when he went to leave it was very noticeable. It was mostly his warmth, when his warmth leaves she misses it.
It was 4AM, like it always was. On. The. Dot. He got up, silently, as silent as the dead. Hell, he was even more quiet than the dead.
Why was he so damn quiet?
"Urgh." She groaned as he put on his very bright orange track suit. God, that thing was an eyesore. She looked at him, even if she didn't want to wake up. But every morning she did, because she would worry and miss him while he was gone. She would drum up all these scenarios of him getting ran over, shot, ganged up by a bunch of criminals and she wouldn't be able to sleep because of it.
"Ugh, you know.. you don't have to go on a run every single morning." She rubbed her eyes as she sat up. This time she wore one of his blue long sleeves, and he would be lying if he said he didn't think she looked absolutely 'kawaii' in his clothes. She saw him stretch out his legs with a few lunges, right before bending down to touch his toes. He went the extra mile and without bending his legs even a millimeter he placed both palms flat on the ground.
Talk about flexible.
"I kinda do, I gotta keep in shape or I'll be the size of a whale." The comparison made Chloe grin. Because now all she could think of was a whale with blonde hair, blue eyes, and three whiskers on each cheek.
"No you won't. If you can eat fifty ramen bowls in one sitting and not gain a single pound, then I think you can skip one morning run." She was pretty alert now, with a little grogginess at being awake.
"These morning runs are why I didn't gain a single pound." Naruto quipped and Chloe rolled her eyes.
"Okay I get how important it is, I really do. So now help me convince you to stay in bed damn it." Naruto chuckled before leaning over and kissing her on the forehead.
"I love you, but even you can't keep me away from these runs. They're how I start my days. They help build focus and give me clarity for the rest of the day." Naruto smiled at her pout and turned to leave.
"Fine! But come here and smooch me damn it!" Her outburst had Naruto laugh heartily before he leaned down and pecked her on the lips.
"Okay Chlo, I gotta go. You're making me late for the run. Who knows if I'll catch the sun rising now." Chloe huffed and pulled their bed covers up onto her.
"Oh shut your cute ass up. Even the sun doesn't wake up this early from bed." Naruto chuckled at that before leaving and closing their door. He did the same to their front door after putting on a pair of equally bright orange running shoes. He locked the door and started his day.
'Where should I go to this time..' Unlike most runners who run within city limits, Naruto didn't. When he trained he used his chakra as well, he liked to venture to different cities, different states, countries etcetera. Today though he felt kind of lazy, so he'll just run a hundred or so laps around Portland.
'Been a while since I stopped there, wonder what I'll find.' The run to Portland had been fast and simple. Just like these runs always were. Naruto ran around the city, lapping and keeping an ear out for anything that stood out. While on these runs he would often hear crimes taking place, as well as other dramatic things.
There were times where he intervened on whatever crime was being committed. Most of those times were robberies, they were the easy ones. Today however, was very quiet. Which was unusual, but in Naruto's experience, it meant something bigger was going to take place. Naruto noticed a shift in the air, it was a quick breeze but it was there.
Something yellow, red, purple, and blue.
It had all come from one person. Naruto stopped and ran to a nearby rooftop to survey the area. There was a little girl being chased by two grown men in matching uniforms.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!" Her screech had Naruto frowning. He kept observing the situation.
"Alex! You have to come back now!" The taller, younger man yelled as he tried his best to catch up to the little girl. The girl proved to be faster than her captors. In situations like these, Naruto would've already intervened. If he hadn't matured from the past anyways. Nowadays Naruto not only has the patience to oversee situations like these, but also act at the perfect time.
Naruto saw the girl, Alex sprint into a nearby alley. He saw her hide behind a dumpster, while the two men attempted to catch up to her.
This was Naruto's chance. Quicker than the eye can see, and way before the two men ran into the alley, he appeared. Before Alex could scream Naruto picked her up and ran back up to the same rooftop he was on before.
He placed a silencing seal to quiet their no doubt loud conversation.
"Hey! Let me go!" Naruto did as told and he watched as the little girl backed away from him. She didn't quite notice where she was going as she felt a foot slip off of the roof. That caused her to trip backwards and she quickly felt the rest of her body leave the roof. She screamed.
"AAAAAAAAH!" Before she fell even an inch, she felt a strong large hand latch onto her wrist. During the very brief fall, she closed her eyes in fear. She breathed in and out in rapid succession, latching onto safety as soon as her feet touched solid ground.
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" Naruto felt awkward about the embrace, before shrugging and patting the shorter girl on the head.
"Well.. that wouldn't have happened if you didn't back away without talking to me first.." Naruto trailed off and Alex opened her eyes to widen them. She stopped hugging the much taller blonde and backed away a step to look at him.
Blonde, tan, blue eyes, whisker cheeks? And Alex never thought pretty could describe a boy but here she was being proved wrong.
He was a pretty boy.
"I'm sorry I scared you-"
"I wasn't scared.." She interrupted with the least amount of confidence a person could have. Naruto felt sweat drip down his head at the obvious lie but let it go.
"Well, then I'm sorry for getting you up here without your permission. However your care takers would've just brought you back before I could talk to you." Naruto explained and Alex nodded, following along.
While Naruto was talking, Alex noticed something she never did before. Naruto had glowed a bright orange, it was so bright that the sun had to close its metaphorical eyes.
'What is this feeling? I've never..' She held her hand out and immediately felt warmth envelope her. She began with a grin, and then laughter. It started with her covering her mouth in a snicker, right before she laughed out loud, joyfully. She laughed until she bent over to hold onto her knees. She laughed until her belly hurt, until her eyes teared up, and until she ran out of breath.
Naruto smiled at the sight, he already knew her despite never knowing she existed until today. He could see who she was.
A lonely, compassionate, emotional person. Naruto saw part of himself within her. She really was special.
"Happiness is a choice y'know. So is never giving up, working hard, and showing kindness. You can say I've.. mastered these things. You feel it don't you?" He saw the grin on her face and knew he was right.
"Yeah, I guess you can say that.. but um, how did we even get up here? I swear I was just.." Alex stepped toward the ledge on the rooftop and saw where she previously was. The staff that had been chasing her were now looking for her near the dumpster. One of the men kicked a nearby trash bag in frustration.
"It's good you bring it up. I was going to try and switch topics, looks like you did it for me." He rubbed his head sheepishly as Alex turned back to him. Naruto approached her and sat on the ledge, looking down at the men below. He patted the ledge next to him and she hesitantly planted herself next him.
"Won't they see us?" Naruto shook his head, pointing upwards. Alex looked up and noticed that there was a translucent barrier with a shiny white outline.
"What is this?"
"It's a sound and vision barrier. Nothing beyond this point can see or hear us."
"Whoa.."
"It's a part of the thing that makes me special, like how you're special."
"Wait, how did you-"
"It's kind of what I'm good at. I just know when something isn't normal. And you stand out from a crowd."
"I don't get it."
"Okay, well I'll start with myself." Naruto placed his hand out showcasing a floating blue spark of energy.
"This is what I possess. It's called chakra. It's what makes me different from everyone else." Naruto noticed her hand moving towards the chakra and immediately retracted. She hoped she didn't cross any boundaries.
Naruto smiled and took one of her hands bringing it to the chakra.
"You can touch it if you want. I would have to manipulate it a certain way for it to cause any harm." Alex nodded as she felt Naruto let go of her. She used her index finger to touch the spark. She immediately felt elated at the action. She laughed as she touched the spark, watching as it moved as she pushed it.
"It's so light and dense! Why is it like that?" Alex then pinched the chakra, watching as it split in two before reforming above her.
"Whoa.."
"It's a combination between physical and spiritual energy. The spiritual part is like clay that you can change at will, while the physical part is what you see, and what gives it weight. This is a part of me, like your power is a part of you." Alex frowned at the last part, reminiscing on the memories she had.
"It doesn't feel like a power.. more like a curse."
"Why do you say that?"
"I.. can't stop it. The thoughts, the feelings with the thoughts, my own emotions aren't even mine anymore! There's so many sad and angry feelings around me, that I can't escape from! It's like a loop of endless pain. I hate it. I hate it so fucking much!" Naruto frowned before wrapping an arm around her, she immediately calmed, and felt reassured. Her empathy was working in her favor this time.
"What if I told you, I can help you?" Alex widened her eyes before pulling back. She frowned with incredulity.
"Why would you do that.. for me? You don't even know me." Naruto just smiled, before shrugging. His aura glowed an even brighter orange than before, it blinded her, as well as consumed her.
'His happiness, it's the most powerful thing I've ever felt. How could someone be so pure, so positive? It's like all of the happiness that everyone has is all combined into this person..'
"I know what it's like, to be alone. To have no guidance on what I could do. I know what it's like to not have friends. I know how it feels to be taken advantage of. But I can tell you, that life does get better. But it has to be us that builds that future. No one is coming to save us, we have to take the opportunity to save ourselves. My offer to help isn't to save you. Because I can't. However, that doesn't mean I can't give you your own tools, building blocks, and a ton of awesomeness." Alex smiled at his goofy finish, but the message sunk in quickly.
"I don't.. I don't know what to say.. I just, I'm stuck at this foster home and-" She felt a hand on her head.
"Alex, don't worry so much. I can handle it." Alex pouted at his continued head patting, but didn't otherwise acknowledge it.
"Okay.. so what happens now?" Naruto shrugged as he looked down at the workers again. They were both arguing. With Naruto's ears, he was able to hear that they blamed each other for letting Alex escape.
"You'll have to bear this for a bit longer. If we want this to work, I need you to be a part of my family." Alex widened her eyes at his words.
"Wait, you want me to.. be a part of, your family? We just met, I don't.." Naruto grinned, her confusion was endearing and funny.
"It's not much different from families coming into adopt kids. I may be young, but I am the head of the household. Not legally, but my mom listens to me a lot. Especially since I'm the reason we're filthy rich.." Naruto shook his head in disbelief, while Alex raised her eyebrows at his mention of their wealth.
"Filthy rich? Do you live in a mansion or something?"
"No, that's too gaudy. We live in a two-story house. I make insane amounts of money from my job, and my mom doesn't have to work a day in her life. She felt bad at first, but now she can chase her dream. We're very well off, and since I'm so good at what I do.. we're not running out anytime soon." Naruto summed up and Alex became quiet, contemplating.
"Does your family know about your.. chakra?" Naruto sighed at her question, he wondered why he never told Joyce and Chloe. It sure would be less of a headache, but he was also afraid of them treating him different. He shook his head before looking at the younger girl.
"You reminded me of something I have to do. They don't but.. I think it's about time that they know." Alex pursed her lips at his response.
"So let me get this straight. You told me, a random girl with emotion powers, before your mom and.."
"Girlfriend/adoptive sister."
"Yeah, your girlfriend/adoptive- wait, what?" Her confusion was so funny that Naruto snorted before guffawing.
"Me and her have an interesting history. But yeah, it's just me and them. So we have plenty of room for you, and trust me.. they'll love you. Chloe is a little rough around the edges but, she's lovable in her own way."
"Okay.. but um, what do you want me to do? I don't exactly want to go back.. they'll give me disciplinary action for running away." Naruto hummed before frowning. That IS a problem isn't it.
"You can just come with me, then all of us will come to Helping Hands and say, 'Hey we found Alex while she ran away. We want to adopt her, and blah blah blah.'" Naruto's plan had Alex raising an eyebrow in skepticism.
"That's.. that's your plan?" Naruto grinned at her.
"Yep! Sounds pretty genius right?" Alex frowned before shaking her head.
'What am I getting myself into?'
"Hey wait, we're gonna be doing all of this and I don't even know your name!" She saw Naruto visibly blush at his mishap before he shook his head.
"Oh, right. Naruto Price. Nice to meet you Alex.." Naruto stuck his hand for her to shake.
"Chen. Alex Chen." She shook his hand, smiling at his weirdness.
"Alright, with that out of the way.." Naruto re-positioned himself into a crouch, she looked at him oddly.
"Hop on, you can trust me on this." Alex stood up hesitantly. She hooked her arms around Naruto's neck and she felt strong arms grip her thighs. Naruto looked forward and Alex widened her eyes.
"And... BLAST OFF!" Naruto then ran, leaping off the building. Alex laughed with exhilaration. She never felt so free before. The wind in her air, the way everything blurred around. It helped her feel happy again. While Naruto was in the air, he snapped his fingers. He had to make sure the barrier dissipated, he didn't want anyone noticing.
Naruto took a bit longer to get back home so that Alex could enjoy the 'ride'. He smiled at her joy, he hoped he could help her keep it. He did think about how Joyce and Chloe would react to bringing her home though. There was going to be quite the conversation when he returned.
Naruto and Alex arrived to the two-story Price home, and Alex already knew it was nicer than any home she's ever had. She misses the one with her brother and parents but, this place seemed much more suave than theirs. She instinctively grabbed Naruto's wrist as he led her to the door. Naruto stopped and looked down at her, noticing the fear on her face.
"What's wrong?"
"Are you sure this is.. okay? Will they even like me, will they want me, will they-" Naruto knelt down and patted the girl's head. She stopped talking to try and feel his warmth. His warm and bright aura was a boon for a person like her.
"They're gonna like you. Because I do." His eyes glowed brightly in that moment, it entranced Alex. She felt her cheeks heating up at his words and looked down.
"Okay.." Naruto tilted her head up and smiled.
"Chin up, you're gonna be a great addition to our house. Trust me." Alex nodded, still hesitant, and yet much more willing. Naruto unlocked the door with his chakra, missing Alex's awed expression. As soon as he entered he heard the frying of a wok. The sound had become familiar to him ever since he told Joyce to get one for their kitchen.
"Mom! Chloe! I'm home!" Joyce peeked her head through the doorway with a grin, right before she saw the much smaller, thinner, girl next to Naruto.
"Hon, who's this?" Joyce questioned as Chloe sped down the stairs to greet her boyfriend.
"Naru! Who the hell?" Chloe got within arm's distance of the blonde, who shook his head before flicking her on the forehead.
"Ouch! What the hell babe!" Joyce smiled at the pet name her daughter gave Naruto before looking to the little girl next to him.
"Your manners 'babe'. And this is Alex Chen. Alex, this is my adoptive mom Joyce, and my girlfriend/ adoptive sister Chloe." Joyce frowned at his introduction for Chloe.
"Naruto, that's so odd. It may be true but, it's not the right etiquette." Naruto shrugged at her.
"Eh, it's not so bad. It would be worse if we were blood related." Joyce pinched her nose before sighing. She shook her head before looking to Alex.
"Well sweetie, I made breakfast. My special scrambled eggs and bacon fried rice, with hash browns on the side. I also have pancakes with pecan syrup. Are you hungry?" Alex looked to the side to see Naruto grin at her in reassurance.
"Yeah.." Joyce then pulled Alex to the table to seat her next to where she sat. Naruto dragged Chloe to the table as well seeing all of the food laid out for them.
"Wow mom, this looks great!" Joyce smiled at his appreciation.
"Thank you son, it's a good thing I cooked extra. I didn't realize you were bringing home a.. guest." The girl was at least two years younger than Naruto. And most likely three years younger than Chloe.
"Yeah, that's what I came to talk about. But before we get to it.. you should know where's she's from." As Naruto was talking he distributed plates to everyone. The women appreciated it, as everyone took their own servings. Joyce made sure to give extra to Alex, that girl was way too skinny for her liking.
"So.. where?" Chloe asked after the short food pause."
"Wait, before I speak.. we should at least give thanks."
"Oh right. Itadakimasu!" Chloe said before everyone sans Alex echoed her. The girl tried to say it and Naruto grinned.
"Don't worry you'll get the hang of it." Alex nodded before taking a bite out of the fried rice. Her eyes lit up in awe at the flavor before taking a spoonful more.
"This is so good! How did you cook it so well?" She looked to Joyce who smiled at the genuine appreciation.
"I actually learned the recipe from Naruto. He's helped me improve my kitchen skills a bunch since we've adopted him." Alex looked to Naruto who didn't even notice their conversation, eating at breakneck speeds. She noticed Chloe laughing at him and she smiled. She looked to Joyce who also fondly smiled at their antics.
"So.. what's it like to have them be so couply? You said you adopted Naruto right?" Joyce nodded before taking on a reminiscent visage.
"Well at first it was shocking. But then I saw how happy they were. However, they didn't tell me outright. I found out by myself, involuntarily though."
"Involuntarily?" Joyce laughed at the word before shaking her head.
"I'll tell you how it happened in a few years. Well, if you remember to ask me." Joyce smiled at Alex's pout. She was smart and curious for what she guessed was a twelve year old. She shook her head before eating her food, finishing it off with the rest of her family plus Alex.
"Okay, I guess it's time to talk." Everyone turned their attention to Naruto, waiting for him to continue his earlier topic.
"Alex, is from Portland."
"Portland? That's a little far from us." A good two cities away from Joyce's memory.
"It is, and I met her there." Chloe widened her eyes at his statement.
"What do you mean? You couldn't have possibly been to Portland and back in the span of an hour. You would've either have to have flown or take a ferry!" Her outburst caused the male blonde to grin.
"Well, that's where I'm gonna have to come in and explain isn't it?" Naruto said and snapped his fingers. Soon everything around them turned into an open clearing with a flowing river, rocks, and a waterfall in the background.
"What the fuck?!" Joyce didn't normally curse but this seemed very appropriate.
"Naruto what the hell is going on?!" Chloe grabbed onto him as they looked at the nature around them. The rocks were green, and the grass was gray, as if the rocks and grass switched colors. The water itself was a bright orange, much to Naruto's delight.
"Okay everyone, take a deep breath. You all need to be calm to hear what I have to say." Everyone did as told, Joyce and Chloe took multiple breaths while Alex took a couple.
"This is the work of a dimension warping jutsu."
"Justu?" Chloe asked.
"Dimension warping?" Alex inquired.
"Honey what the hell are you talking about?" Out of all of them, Joyce seemed to be the most in shock. Naruto couldn't blame her. This would be crazy if he was from this world, universe, time, whatever it was.
"I possess something called chakra. It is.. like a power. It's the combination between spiritual energy, and physical energy. While you all may call it a power, to me.. I call it normal. Jutsu is basically a technique. But for you guys, I think a 'power move' would suffice. It's not technically correct, but it's easier for you to understand." Joyce collapsed onto the silver grass in shock. Her son had powers, what in the world.. Everyone crouched down beside her to make sure she was alright.
Naruto waved a glowing green hand over her, checking for any discrepancies.
"I'm okay hun, I just.. I need a minute okay?" Naruto nodded before standing up. He sighed before looking away, finding relief in the waterfall's water visage.
'Not the smoothest way to explain it Naruto. Why didn't you just show them the chakra you showed Alex earlier?' Kurama's voice cut in and Naruto shrugged.
'I'm gonna show them some jutsu. So they can fully know what I'm capable of.'
'Hm, what about me?'
'I don't want to overload them.. and you're a pretty big deal.'
'Damn right.'
Naruto turned back to see Joyce standing up, massaging her head from the ache it got.
"Okay Naruto, I'm ready for more.. if you have more." Naruto nodded. He had plenty.
"I do. Now, with my chakra I'm able to use it and manipulate it in.. certain ways." Naruto did his signature hand sign and five more of him fizzled out of thin air. His Shadow Clone Jutsu didn't cause smoke anymore, a clear sign of perfect mastery over the jutsu.
All of the girls' jaws dropped to the floor, and their eyes widened to the height of skyscrapers.
"W-what the.. there's more of you!" Chloe gasped and Naruto smiled.
"Indeed, and they're all physical copies of me." Naruto fist bumped each and every clone and Joyce damn near collapsed again. Except she shook her head out of her daze to focus. She needed to be strong, this was her son in everything but blood. She had to be there for him.
"So this.. explains why." Naruto arched an eyebrow at Joyce's words.
"Explains why..?"
"Why you're always home with us, and yet you're able to work at that job of yours. And I'm assuming why it's safe for you, because this.. chakra isn't your.. real body? But the energy you used.. am I right?" Naruto grinned at Joyce. She picked it up pretty quickly.
"You're actually very spot on mom. These clones of mine, they're just a physical manifestation of my chakra, personality and body. I am the real Naruto, but they're also a perfect replica. However whatever happens to them physically will not happen to me physically. However whenever they pop or if I discontinue the jutsu, their memories are passed onto me." Everyone nodded slowly, processing everything he's saying.
"Now I'll have them demonstrate something, the five chakra natures."
"The five what-" Before Alex could continue her question she saw Naruto's clones demonstrate different elements in his hands. One clone had what looked like wind, another with lightning, the next one with fire, the one after that with earth, and the last one with water..
Holy shit.
"These are simple demonstrations of chakra natures, I can manipulate them in whatever way I want.. but I won't." The younger girls pouted at not seeing more, but Joyce sighed in relief. She wasn't that old but today made her feel like it.
"What else can your.. chakra do?" Joyce asked and Naruto turned to her.
"I can enhance my body in every way. Sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch, I can even make my body stronger, as well as faster. However since like eighty percent of the world doesn't exercise, I've never had to use it. Without chakra I'm still beyond what you all call your.. peak." Naruto explained and the women nodded.
Naruto was strong, fast, and durable even without this chakra thing. So for him to use it.. it probably would make him invincible, like a modern day Superman.
"That's pretty much the gist of it. Any questions?" Chloe instantly raised her hand and Naruto nodded at her.
"Yes Chloe?" She put her hand down and grinned lecherously.
"So, have you used your clones to gangbang someone?"
"Chloe! What the hell are you asking?!" Joyce shouted at the girl with a red tint staining her older cheeks. Naruto and Alex also supported a visible tomato visage on their expressions. Meanwhile Chloe just shrugged.
"It's a valid question. The things you can do-"
"Enough! Enough! Enough! I can't believe my daughter is such a pervert! You're saying these things in front of a minor!"
"Um, me and Naruto are still minors too-"
"You know what I mean you smart mouth!" Joyce pinched the girl's ear and Chloe screeched.
"OW! OW! OW!"
"This is what you get for being so disgusting!" As that went on, Naruto pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed audibly.
"Your chakra is why we got here so fast isn't it?" Alex asked and Naruto nodded.
"Yeah, there's a bunch of other things I can do with it. But, it's not necessary. I think I got everything explained, at least the most important stuff." Naruto looked at his family and smiled at the nagging Joyce gave Chloe.
Despite how crazy Chloe's question was.. it was an interesting thought.
'Sage of Six Paths save me. He's just like his perverted sensei.' Kurama sighed and Naruto smiled. He clapped his hands loudly to get Joyce and Chloe's attention.
"One final thing. If Alex is okay with it.. then I can explain why she's here." Naruto pointedly looked at her and she hesitantly nodded. She thought they might as well go the full mile with this.
"She's from Portland, and that was the city I went to for my run. While there, I felt something abnormal. That abnormality was.. her." Joyce and Chloe looked visibly confused at the explanation.
"Her? What do you mean?" Joyce questioned.
"I mean.. she's kind of like me. Not in the chakra way, but in the, 'not like anyone else.' way. Alex has powers, powers that have to do with feeling another person's emotions, or at least observing it. I brought her here, because I want our family to take her in. I want to help her gain a grasp on her powers." Naruto shocked Joyce and Chloe further, while Alex blushed.
"So what you're saying is.. you brought this little girl here, to adopt, because she is special like you?" Joyce asked and Naruto nodded. The mother smiled before putting a hand on the blonde's cheek.
"You really are a kind man Naruto. You may have the body of someone growing up, but I can tell you're the kind of man William would be proud of. And I am too. Of course we'll take her in. She's from Portland you said? Like an orphanage?" Naruto nodded with a grin.
"More like a family group home. Either way, we can adopt her." Naruto said and everyone smiled. However Naruto noticed Alex become a little hesitant.
"What's wrong Alex?"
"I just.. I don't know if I deserve all of this.." Naruto pursed his lips before lifting her up and putting her on his shoulders. Just like how William used to do with him.
She giggled as she grabbed his blonde head of hair to keep balance.
"Don't say that. You deserve the best y'know. And even if you feel like you don't.. then do what you need to do to feel like you do. Kapeesh?" Naruto said and Alex grinned before agreeing.
"Now, let's make Alex a Price!" Naruto snapped his fingers and they were back inside their house.
"Okay kiddos, get ready. We want to look good for Portland." Joyce said and everyone nodded.
Things were getting even more interesting around here.
It had been a month since Alex had been adopted into their family. The Helping Hands staff had been surprised by their family's eagerness to adopt Alex. They all had bad experiences dealing with the girl, so they didn't think anyone would be able to. They tried to tell them she ran away and deserved disciplinary action.
