Chapter 4: California Girl

Naruto never really thought about what happened at school. Most of its consistency was the usual cliques and cliches. However, today was different. There was a new student that came to Blackwell Academy. And from Naruto's perspective, she already made headway with everybody in school. Wherever she went, everyone smiled, laughed, and tried to impress her. The girl just knew all the right things to say, Naruto thought the whole thing was odd.
He didn't like Rachel Amber.
At the moment he was out at lunch with Steph, Dana, Mikey, and Chloe. They sat at the usual table where Steph and Mikey usually play D&D.
"What are your guys' thoughts on Rachel Amber?" Naruto asked and everyone besides Chloe grinned.
"She's so hot." Steph said without thinking, the group at the table looked at her in amusement while the Gingrich girl tried to shrink into herself.
"Rachel's just.. fabulous. I feel like she's the female version of perfect." Naruto frowned at their responses. He knew that if there was an election for Blackwell Queen then Rachel Amber would be it. He normally didn't pay attention to social status, but that girl just rubbed him the wrong way.
"What's up with you? You've been sour ever since Rachel started attending Blackwell." Chloe asked and Naruto sighed before shaking his head.
"I don't know. There's just something off about her. You all may like her, but I can't help but feel wrong about her." Naruto said and everyone widened their eyes in surprise.
"Naru, I hate to say this but.. she's like you. She's popular, charming, funny, and a damn fine looker." Dana said and Naruto sighed at the comparison before pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Like I said, I don't know. Rachel just isn't my cup of tea."
"Don't let the rest of the guys hear you say that. They all want a piece of Rachel." Mikey said and Naruto looked at him with a twitch.
"That's so weird. Everyone pining for the same girl." Naruto said and everyone shrugged.
"If you got it, then you got it." Steph shrugged and Naruto arched an eyebrow at her.
"I bet you'd know if she's got it huh." It wasn't a question and Steph knew it. Her face reddened further and she bit her lip in embarrassment.
"Okay but seriously, what's up with her? She seems fine to me." Chloe said and Naruto looked to her with a shrug.
"She's like.. a chameleon. Like she knows exactly what to say to get close to someone. To.. blend into the crowd." Naruto said and everyone looked at him in amusement.
"Naru, if you're paranoid then just say so." Dana laughed and Naruto's eyebrow twitched.
"Oh shut it, it's not paranoia it's noia."
"What does that even mean?" Mikey asked and Naruto shrugged.
"It's just not as severe paranoia." Everyone sighed at Naruto's explanation before Steph looked at the time.
"Class is going to start soon, we better get going." She said and packed up her things.
"Another day, another class, another test to ace." Naruto said as he grabbed his bag and hoisted it over his shoulder.
"Oh fuck off. You ace everything." Chloe cursed and Naruto smiled.
"Must be awesome to have a brain like mine." Chloe rolled her eyes before hooking her arm around his. The group walked to their respective classes, but didn't notice a certain teen watching them walk away.
'I wonder what he's got against me. I've never done anything to him..' Rachel's thoughts about Naruto had her confused to the highest degree. Yet she already knew, she wanted to become closer to the blonde. To unveil the mystery behind him.
Naruto had walked to Ms. Grant's class after he gave Chloe a kiss goodbye. He almost didn't want to go in partially because he didn't share this class with any of his best friends. But mostly because Rachel Amber was in it. As soon as he walked into class he saw a group of guys trying to flirt with the disinterested girl. No one else in the room could tell she was leading them on besides Naruto.
He noticed the slight twitch of her lips, the frown that would love to be set free. He observed the slight crinkling of her eyebrows, threatening to clench in disgust. She kept her hands on her lap, but repetitively grabbed a bit of the jean fabric. Naruto noticed all of the signs of her stress, and Rachel noticed him. She looked over and gave him a beatific smile. There was something completely crazy about her smile..
It was unconditionally genuine. Naruto felt a chill run down his spine as he elected to sit in the back corner of the class. He didn't want to be bothered with anyone today.
'Why is she interested in me now?' Naruto looked toward Rachel again and found seductive eyes staring back. The chill grew stronger and Naruto had his eyes glued to his lab desk.
'She's watching me like a hawk!'
'Rachel is most likely interested in you romantically. We haven't sensed any ill intent from her.' Kurama piped in and Naruto frowned.
'She's still not normal though. There is just something about her that sets me on edge.'
'Probably because you and her share similar qualities. Except you're far more genuine, and idiotic.' Naruto squinted his eyes at that, annoyed by his best friend's explanation.
'You hurt my feelings a lot Kurama..'
'No I don't, you're just being a baby.'
'Says you!' As Naruto argued with his furred friend he heard Ms. Grant call to the class.
"Okay students! We're going to be doing some light experiments today! We are going to make tornadoes in jars!" Ms. Grant said and Naruto arched an eyebrow. That sounded interesting.
"Due to limited supplies, that came out of my own pocket mind you.. you're going to be choosing lab partners! Two people per station! I'll give you all five minutes!" The announcement had everyone excited. They loved talking with their friends. However as soon as she finished announcing every guy besides Naruto rushed towards Rachel. Naruto's eye twitched at the sight as she was bombarded with requests to partner up.
He noticed her eyes widened and he snickered. Serves her right.
Naruto simply looked at the ingredients that sat at his station:
Empty Jar
Water
Dish Soap
Glitter
He looked at the instructions for the experiment. There was a sheet of paper that read:
1. Fill the jar 3/4 full of water
2. Add a small drop of dish soap
3. Put a small teaspoon of glitter inside
4. Tightly screw the top on and watch the tornado form.
Seemed simple enough. Naruto gathered the ingredients in an organized manner, keeping an eye out for anyone who approached him. Usually a couple girls, or guys would've offered to be his partner already. However no one did this time which was odd, Naruto frowned before looking up entirely. He saw Rachel approaching him and Naruto's frowned deepened further.
'Sage of Six Paths. Why me?'
"Hey, Naruto right?" She got within arm's reach and Naruto looked into her eyes, disliking how beautifully hazel they were.
"Yes.. what is it Rachel?" His tone was sharp and on edge, however it didn't deter the much shorter girl. She smiled, and it grated on Naruto's nerves. It looked so fake, so practiced. Yet he knew, her interest in him was genuine.
"I was thinking, we could be partners. I'm not that great at science, but I heard you're really smart. Can you help me out this time?" Her question was framed in an innocent and confident way.
'Hah! You, smart? I've heard it all!'
'Not now Kurama.'
"And why do you think I'd partner up with you?" Rachel had still been unfazed by his clear dislike for her.
"Because, you're sweet, kind, compassionate, easygoing, and.. other synonyms for the same thing." Naruto hated how she said it, it almost made him smile.
"I'm clearly a damsel in distress. Can you please help me?" Naruto sighed, he really wanted to say no. So.. he was going to follow his instincts and do just that.
"Listen here Rachel-" He was interrupted by a loud clap from the science teacher. Naruto damn near bit his tongue in surprise from the abrupt noise.
"Okay class! Partner choosing is over! Whoever you're next to is your partner until class is over!" Naruto widened his eyes before he visibly slumped forward. He looked to Rachel who's eyes sparkled with sexy mischief.
'She knew five minutes was about to be up. Unbelievable.' Rachel sat down on the stool next to him in the happiest way possible. It's like she won a prize or something she was that beatific about it.
"I guess we're partners after all." She grinned at him and Naruto truly hated how good it looked on her. He grumbled to himself as she scooted closer to him. They began the experiment, filling up the jar with water.
"So.. you don't like me much." Her statement made Naruto rolls his eyes.
"What gave you that idea?" She smiled at him.
"Oh you know.. the sexy eye roll, the sexy frowning, the sexy slouching when we're announced partners, the sexy sexiness." Naruto sighed and Rachel laughed.
"Oh, and of course the sexy sighing. Can't forget that." Naruto pointedly stared at her, and she just kept grinning.
"What do you want?" Rachel hummed before she poked him in the chest.
"I want to know.. why. You. Don't. Like. Me." With every pause she poked him in the chest, and Naruto grabbed her wrist. Rachel bit her lip, staring up at him with those alluring features of hers. Without meaning to, Naruto pulled her closer to him, much to Rachel's delight.
"Careful, a little closer and we'll do something you'll regret." Rachel looked down at his big supple lips and bit her own. Naruto widened his eyes as he saw the proximity between them. Barely a few centimeters apart.
"Hey you two, finish the experiment and then get a room after class! We're here for science!" Ms. Grant said and everyone in the room gasped. Naruto let go of Rachel's wrist and blushed a bright red. Rachel giggled as she studied Naruto's features.
"You are so cute."
"Shut up." Now the class was in an uproar about Naruto and Rachel.
"Oh my god, they would be the cutest couple!"
"Cute? They would be divine. Naruto is a God, and he's finally met his Goddess Rachel!"
"They would have the most adorable babies."
"WE NEED THEM TOGETHER! What would their ship name be? Narchel, or Rato?"
"Narchel is super cute!"
"Narchel it is!"
As the class gossiped about the two, Rachel observed Naruto's increasing redness. It filled up to the point where his whole face looked like a ripe tomato.
"They're technically not wrong."
"Shut. It." Rachel smiled before making a zipping motion across her lips. Naruto shook his head at her before noticing the water in the jar overflowing. He spilled some out until it was seventy-five percent full.
"Okay, now.. we add a drop of dish soap and a teaspoon of glitter." Naruto went to do just that before Rachel snatched the two items from him.
"Why are we playing it safe? We should just dump a whole bunch of it!" Rachel began to pour both of the contents in and Naruto widened his eyes.
"Wait! Don't do that! Otherwise the mix will-"
BOOM!
"-explode." The dish soap and glitter blew up and landed all over Naruto's jacket.
'This was my favorite blue jacket too.' Naruto sighed as he saw Rachel gasp.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" Naruto shook his head before taking off the jacket.
"Don't worry about it." When he took the jacket off it had a noticeable effect among his fellow classmates. They all saw his muscle toned tan arms as well as his bulging pectorals and shoulders.
"He's so jacked!" A random jock gasped.
"I'd want him to choke me with those arms.." A girl said, laughing among her friends.
"His bicep could crush boulders.. look at them!" Another girl told her boy best friend.
"I bet I could get a body like that if I wanted.." That same boy best friend sulked.
Meanwhile even Rachel had to whistle in appreciation.
"You definitely work out, how much can you-"
"All of it." Naruto ended her thirst statement right then and there. He knew what his harsh training got him, but he didn't do it for the publicity. Yes Naruto knew he was attractive, kind, and all of these other qualities. However, Naruto knew he wasn't this way because of the opinions of other people, he forged his way with blood, sweat, tears, and understanding. He looked at Rachel who seemed stunned for a moment, before looking him up and down. The girl was basically undressing him with her eyes.
"You want to know why I don't like you?" Rachel widened her eyes at his harsh tone, listening intently, if not a bit hesitantly.
"You're a fake. All you do is try to fit in, be the topic of conversation, adapting to the knowledge of people's passions all because you want to make yourself seem perfect. Well unlike you, people like me because I'm a genuine person. You smile fake, talk fake, and act fake. You don't give a damn about people unless it benefits you." Rachel, too stunned to speak left her eyes and mouth wide open in shock. With that confession Naruto stood up and took his blue jacket with him.
"Sorry Ms. Grant, we got a little carried away with our experiment. Is it okay if I get cleaned up in the bathroom?"
"Of course Naruto. Take the time that you need, and I saw what happened. I won't let it hinder your grade." Ms. Grant smiled and Naruto grinned right back.
"You're the best."
"I know, I know. Now hurry along, That glitter is getting shinier by the minute." Naruto laughed at her joke before running out the door. Rachel frowned and bit her lip before suddenly standing up and running after him.
"Naruto! Wait!" The class looked on at the scene as Rachel told Ms. Grant she was going to help Naruto, since she was the one who messed up the experiment.
"Looks like a lover's spat." One of the girls said and her friends nodded in agreement.
"It's so cute in a marital sort of way."
"Yeah, even though I want Naruto for myself.. Rachel is too perfect for him to notice me." One of the girls became sullen while the boys talked in their own group.
"Naruto really has Rachel begging for his attention."
"How does he do it?"
"I don't know, but it's fucking magical."
"Damn right dude."
"I hope he and her get it figured out. Even though I'd rather be the one to bone Rachel."
"Same bro, same."
Outside of class Naruto heard Rachel running after him and he sighed with exasperation.
"Rachel, why are you following me?" He turned around to face her. She had so much guilt on her face, like she actually felt bad.
"I feel terrible for doing that. I should've listened." Naruto nodded, obviously right.
"I wanted to say.. I'm sorry. Next time I'll let you dork it out with the experiments." Naruto folded his arms, unimpressed by her wording.
"You're not helping yourself. You're just acting so you can manipulate me to do whatever you want."
"That is so not true!"
"But it is! That's why you're so popular! You're fake, and everyone believes it!"
"I.. I.."
"Just leave me be, I have a jacket to clean." Naruto started walking away before he felt Rachel grab his wrist.
"Firewalk."
"Fire-what?"
"It's a band, that's playing tonight. If you want.. to see the real me, then come with me tonight." Naruto looked at her like she grew a second head with four eyes for each of them.
"...What." It was Rachel's turn to blush at his incredulous tone.
"Don't act like I'm being stupid! Everyone knows you can't be your true self at school!"
"Where did you get that from a reality TV show, a cereal box, or a website for psycho bitches?"
"What did you just call me?!"
"You heard what I said Shortstack!"
"Oh yeah?!"
"Yeah!" At this point the two became so close that they were butting heads. They glared at each other, trying to out-will the other to back down. It kept on for a few more seconds until Rachel thought of something. She smirked, calming down and letting herself back away a slight inch.
"You know what? Fine." Naruto widened his eyes in confusion.
"Fine what?"
"Fine, you win. I'm a fake psycho." Naruto squinted his eyes at her in suspicion.
'Where is she going with this?'
"And this fake psycho doesn't want you to come along with her to see Firewalk. I'll just go by my lonesome. To a place where all the drug lords, rapists, and murderers are. All just to see one of my favorite bands ever." She saw Naruto's eye twitch with so much stress she thought it was going to pop out of his head.
"You.. what? Why would you go to a place like that?!" It was at this point she thumbed his bottom lip, surprising him. She retracted her hand, licking the same thumb with her tongue.
"Because. Firewalk." Rachel was about to walk off before she felt Naruto grab her wrist.
'Checkmate.' She smirked, before turning and haughtily looking up into his beautiful ocean eyes. Naruto gazed at her with a blazing glare, before sighing and acquiescing her point.
"When." Rachel grinned.
"When what?" Naruto rolled his eyes at her coyness.
"When do you want me to pick you up."
"Oh, you drive?"
"Yes I do."
"How good?"
"Ever since I was taught."
"When was that?"
"When I was ten."
"Wow, that's young."
"My dad was very forthcoming and practical."
"Was?"
"Don't push it Amber." The girl bit her lip with giddiness, this was the most fun she's had with someone in years!
"Give me your number and I'll text you." Naruto slowly took out his phone, glaring at her the entire time. Rachel smiled alluringly, and Naruto nearly threw up in his mouth. Rachel took his phone, putting his phone number in her phone. She held up her phone afterwards and winked.
"Smile, this is for your contact photo." There was a flash while Naruto folded his arms. Naruto snatched his phone back from her while Rachel looked at the picture she took.
"I'm not a photographer, but I do good work." Naruto rolled his eyes at her.
"Or, I'm just photogenic." Naruto walked away to the men's bathroom, leaving Rachel laughing at his stern opposition. When Naruto entered he sighed, looking at his ruined jacket.
'What the hell just happened?'
'She read you and used your kindness to get her way.'
'Damn it, how?'
'You're genuine. Unfortunately people like her know how to play, and she played you like a fiddle.'
'Look at you being all similac.'
'That is a brand of infant formula, and you know it.'
'Yeah, but I like puns.'
While the two lifelong friends continued their conversation, Naruto washed his jacket with a water jutsu. He then dried his jacket off with a wind jutsu, before doing the same thing to the surrounding area.
'The joys of chakra.'
'My dad is rolling in his grave at your usage of it.'
'Sure, but he's the one who said I was the savior of the world.'
'He would still be stunned at your stupidity.' Naruto smiled at their banter as he went back to Ms. Grant's class. When he returned he noticed the class staring at him. He wordlessly sat down next to Rachel who kept her grin, eyes staring at him the whole way.
"Not. A. Word." The blonde's tone brook no argument. Rachel dropped her grin down to a smile, loving her effect on the blonde.
Meanwhile, Naruto kept questioning what he got himself into.
After classes has ended, Naruto went to his and Chloe's bed. He decided to lie down and close his eyes, processing everything that just happened. All from the moment he entered class, to his interactions with Rachel, and to his jacket getting glittered, then all the way to Rachel goading him to accompany her to Firewalk.
He heard a knock on his door and Naruto opened one eye. He was about to get to the meat of analyzing Rachel's earlier behavior.
"You can come in Alex." It wasn't Chloe or Joyce, they both barged in no matter what the blonde was doing. Well, Chloe technically had this room before him.. and Joyce was just being a mom. After Naruto's permission, Alex opened the door before walking over to sit on his bed.
"You're irritated today." She lied down after she stated her observation, getting a sigh out of Naruto.
"Is it that obvious? Or are you using your powers to read me?"
"A bit of both. Who's Rachel by the way?" She cuddled up to Naruto, and the blonde wrapped his arm around the younger teen.
"She's a new headache. She convinced me to go to this band showing.. concert thing." Alex felt Naruto's irritation spike at the explanation. Yet even for her experience, his irritation was quite tame. Naruto usually controlled his emotions, never letting it get the best of him. As far as Alex could tell anyways.
"Hm, she must like you."
"Well, I don't like her. She's annoying."
"Wow, I think that's the first time I've ever heard you call someone else genuinely annoying. Do tell." Naruto smiled at her goofiness.
"Rachel is just so, fake. I don't care how popular a person is, or how much people like someone.. as long as the person is real to other people and themselves." Naruto said and Alex nodded, understanding where he came from.
"What are you gonna do?"
"She said that if I go with her, then I'd see the real her. And unfortunately this place is also where all the worst people on the planet come together. Since it's dangerous, I have to go. I don't like her, but I wouldn't be able to live with myself if she got hurt and I was able to stop it from happening." Alex thinned her lips at his declaration, it's times like these where she really admired Naruto.
'If he's willing to do this for someone he doesn't like.. I wonder what lengths he'll go to protect someone he loves..' She looked up at her adoptive older brother and smiled.
'He makes me feel safe, he took me in from a place I didn't belong. And now.. being here with him..' She snuggled even closer to Naruto. Naruto noticed but didn't say anything, merely enjoying the comfort she brought in that moment.
"By the way, David's here. Him, Chloe, and Joyce are all downstairs. I was actually supposed to let you know, but then you seemed all glum." Naruto smiled at her, before sitting up. She yelped as she was suddenly lifted off the bed. Naruto held her in a bridal style carry and Alex blushed all different tints of red.
"Naru, what are you-"
"What, I can't carry my little sister downstairs?"
"Um..."
"Exactly." Naruto grinned as he walked out the door, smoothly opening and closing the door with ease.
'Jeez he's strong..' Alex kept looking up at Naruto as they journeyed downstairs, her head was spinning with imagination.
It wasn't the clean kind.
The duo arrived downstairs to see Chloe, Joyce, and David in discussion.
"I'm telling you, pizza night sounds wayyy better than meat night!" Chloe said, pointing at David in specific. The man shook his head, sighing at the girl.
"We all need a helping of meat around here. You're all beautiful but stick thin!" David declared and Joyce shook her head at her boyfriend.
"Dude, meat night sounds sooooo gay." Chloe said and David felt his ears turn red.
"Chloe, that''s not appropriate." Joyce admonished and the teenager grinned.
"Tell David that, if he's gonna suggest something then make it less GAY. Unless he's hiding something mom." The Price teen bumped elbows with her mother who sighed in exasperation.
"I am not a homosexual!" David stood up quickly, embarrassed by the assumption. Naruto and Alex looked at each other before stepping into the spotlight.
"David's gay? Good for him." Naruto chuckled as he set Alex down in an open chair. The girl blushed at his actions before turning toward the rest of her family.
"Naruto don't take Chloe's side on this, please." David's plea fell on deaf ears as the blonde shrugged.
"It may not be legal yet but love is love y'know. Better embrace it David." Joyce saw David clench his jaw with further awkwardness and shook her head.
"Okay you two, stop teasing the man. If you say anything more he's gonna blow up into a balloon and fly away." The two teenagers chuckled while Alex grinned at the image.
"Well.. ahem, Naruto, Alex. Us three were discussing what we should have for dinner. Chloe suggested it be pizza night while I wanted.. ahem, meat night." David explained and Naruto grinned at him, before frowning in realization.
"Damn, I actually won't be here for dinner tonight." Everyone immediately frowned with the blonde at his announcement.
"You have other plans hun?" Joyce asked and Naruto nodded.
"Unfortunately. I don't even want to go where I'm going, but I have to. It's to make sure my.. classmate is safe." Naruto said and everyone widened their eyes.
"What do you mean by safe?" David asked with utmost seriousness.
"There's a band called Firewalk playing tonight. My classmate Rachel, wants me to go with her. She loves the band, but knows it's too dangerous to go alone." Everyone felt their mood somber up even more and Naruto hated seeing them like that.
"What kind of danger are we talking here?" Alex piped in and Naruto sighed.
"Rapists, murderers, drug lords."
"You seriously can't be thinking of going there! This Rachel girl can't be that stupid!" Joyce piped in and David put a hand over hers. It calmed her down some while David looked to Naruto.
"Naruto, we trust you to do the right thing. But, I can't help.. but feel like I should give you backup." The man told Naruto and the blonde appreciated his gesture.
"We'll be okay, it's stupid but I have to do this for her. I'm the only one who can protect her while I'm in there. If anything happens I'll call the cops and head straight home, I'll drag the girl with me if I have to." Naruto's seriousness sent nerves down everyone's spine.
"Babe. Don't be reckless. Firewalk is cool but, this shit sounds stupid! If all those assholes are gonna be there then why not take David? He has guns!" Chloe's outburst caught Naruto off guard. He smiled reassuringly at her, placing a hand over hers.
"It's me Chlo, don't worry. You know what I'm capable of." Naruto said and Chloe widened her eyes. She completely forgot he had chakra and clones, and badass jutsu. The only people who should be worried are the ones who thinking fighting Naruto is a good idea. Yet she worried, because he's her boyfriend, her soulmate, her true love.
"Okay.. but, I'm still worried."
"I can't change that. All I can do is come back home to you." The two locked eyes, forgetting about the rest of the occupants in the room for a moment. David smiled at the scene, it wasn't traditional for them to be together being adoptive siblings and all.. but, love was too powerful for that nonsense. Joyce simply cherished the maturity and communication both of her loved ones had for each other, it reminded her of how much they're growing up. Alex felt a little off by the display, she was happy they found common ground, yet envious because, she wanted something like what they had.
"Well, all I know now is that Rachel will text me when to pick her up. I'll let you all know when I'm heading out." Naruto dismissed himself, going up the stairs to change into his evening wear. He didn't quite care for the event and was ultimately, and indirectly being forced to go. He'll wear an orange tank top with black sweatpants and black sneakers. He looked at himself in the full mirror in his and Chloe's room. He shrugged before feeling his phone buzz in his sweats.

Rachel: I'm ready ;)
Naruto: On my way.

Naruto frowned before heading downstairs. His family were at the dinner table, waiting for Naruto. They all saw him and frowned. The four of them felt a little sick letting Naruto leave, but only three of them knew why it was okay. David still didn't know about his chakra, that was Naruto's secret to explain.
"I'm about to leave, Rachel just texted me."
"Are you sure you have to?" Joyce asked and Naruto nodded grimly.
"I do, unfortunately."
"This girl sounds like trouble. I hope you don't let her drag you down." David said and Naruto nodded.
"She won't, this is a one time thing."
"Naru, be careful okay?" Alex piped in and Naruto smiled at her.
"I will Alex, trust me." After reassuring the younger girl he looked to his girlfriend who was abnormally quiet.
"Babe?"
"I don't want you to go."
"Chloe I thought we-"
"Well I changed my fucking mind! You don't even know her! Why should you protect her? She can make her own stupid decisions!"
"It's not that simp-"
"But it is! She's just a stupid girl! You don't have to protect everyone!" At this point Chloe stood up, breathing heavily from her frustration.
"Chloe, I'm sorry. But I'm going. If I know I can protect someone then I will. No matter how close I am to them." Chloe wanted to say more, to argue, to convince him Rachel wasn't worth it. Yet, she knew deep down that Naruto was right. She hated it, like she always did. Chloe shook her head before grabbing Naruto by his tank top and pulling him closer to her.
