Sacrifice
"I volunteer as tribute."
He says it with so much conviction that Peeta's quiet hiss of "No!" can be heard at the back of the reaping audience.
Haymitch holds his chin up and looks him in the eye. "You want me to say it again?"
The boy holds his gaze for but a moment. A moment that shows the way the truth sets in, those gentle eyes alighting with a horror that Haymitch doesn't envy. He puts it together quickly.
That it doesn't break the promise made to him.
That Haymitch will give his own life so that Katniss's continues.
