Have you ever had one of those days where you're just minding your own business and then suddenly find yourself in the interrogation room of your local police department? Nope, me either.
Anyway, you must be confused as to why I'm here. I'm just your average kid, well, a kid with authorization to carry weaponry of all types and also superpowers, but we're getting off topic. The whole situation actually started just a while ago at this Dust shop that I was going to.
~~A while back~~
I was walking towards the store I often frequented, From Dust Till Dawn, because I needed to get some things before going to Beacon, I kinda needed every single advantage I could give myself since initiation was always the most fun and excruciating part of entering the prestigious school, at least according to Dad.
I walked through the door and waved at the cashier as I usually did whenever I saw the old man at the counter, though I couldn't hear his reply like many times before, mostly because I had my earbuds on, and unfortunately they didn't have any of the features of the more expensive brands such as ambient sound. After that I made my way to the back of the store where most of what I needed was often put, like spare parts and most importantly, flame and heat resistant coating. God knows how much my scabbard needed it after the many times it's internals were nearly melted because of my semblance.
After that, I spent the next few minutes going through products, comparing them to one another to see which one would be the best to use for coating the internals of my scabbard, all the while listening to rap music.
Then I felt something cold tap against my neck, it was pretty solid too since I felt it through my aura... So this was going to be one of those days huh... "Yeah? Need something from me?" I asked innocently enough as I turned my head around to face my would be assailant, already focusing a bit of my semblance on the palm of my hand as subtle as I could with it.
"Didn't you hear me kid? I said hands in the fucking ai-" I heard a loud 'hwacha!' from someone and then a thud, and after a few seconds I heard the glass on the front of the store shatter, the first of those sounds caused the man to look away from me, and the other subsequent sounds that followed kept his attention firmly away from what I was about to do, seriously it was like he was intentionally giving me the biggest opening to exploit
The temperature in the air suddenly dropped as the flickering flame that was on my palm became a small inferno that coated my whole hand. Then I slammed my open palm against the man's back. The force of the hit caused the flames to gather and condense at the palm of my hand before expanding and popping with enough force to send him flying towards the wall of the store, and when he hit the wall the guy just slumped down and didn't get back up. "Oh- oh shit is he dead!?" Oh God no! Killing was absolutely the very last thing he wanted to do especially now!
The fire coating my hand flickered and faded away as I rushed to check on the downed man. I slid to my knees and put my fingers on his neck to feel a pulse, and to my relief I felt a pulse, a weak one but a pulse nonetheless. I sighed in relief, the man was alive, if barely though... though just to be sure, I rolled the unconscious man to his side and saw barely a burn on his person. "Ok... ok we're good. The guy had his aura active." If it wasn't well... let's just say he'd be living with a gnarly scar for the rest of his life.
Sounds of bodies hitting concrete suddenly entered my ears, which probably meant a fight was happening with whoever this guy brought with him to rob From Dust till Dawn... I eyed the sword that was lying next to me as well as the pistol on the man's hip. "... Fuck it, might as well cross theft off the bucket list." I grabbed the pistol before grabbing the sword, making sure both were at their best condition as well as checking the ammo I had on hand.
Turning my attention to the cashier who was still processing what happened as he remained frozen with his hands holding a few Dust crystals of varying quality. "Sorry for the mess sir, I really hope you don't mind if I have to cause more." And with those words I walked out of the store and saw what waited for me.
Several men in black were strewn around the streets, either groaning in pain or knocked out, and left only two figures standing.
One was a man wearing the most aesthetically pleasing outfit I've seen anyone wear to date, along with bright long orange hair and green eyes... Yeah, if the situation was different I'd have compliment the man for finding an outfit that worked with his hair.
And the other was... somewhat familiar to me now that I thought about it. Short black hair that faded into red at the tips, a young pale face, and big bright silver eye- Holy shit, was that Xiao Long's sister!?
Damn, girl got a hell of a lot better at fighting, and a little cuter if I was being honest. Last time I saw her was like a two years ago during the Pharos/Signal tourname- OH FUCK!
Immediately pulling the trigger of the gun several times while wildly aiming at the fashionable man was definitely the right call since he nearly shot something out of his cane at Ruby.
"What the-" was all the man was able to say before he found himself staring at the barrel of the gun I was holding.
"Hey there." I said as the black flames of my semblance gathered at the muzzle. "I'll make this quick, surrender or your head goes boom. Simple right?" It was a bit of a bluff, I'm pretty sure this guy has his aura awakened and active, but on the off chance he didn't I'd at least let him know what would possibly happen if he did anything stupid.
The man sighed and shook his head, obviously exasperated at the situation he found himself in. "Great, another one. Well, Crimson I'd happily surrender but it'd be more trouble than it's worth." Then faster than I expected, the man swatted my arm away, aimed the end of his cane at my chest, and fired an explosive flare out. Causing both him and I to fly in opposite directions.
I landed roughly on my back, heaving for the air I just lost. My hands felt empty so I must've dropped the weapons I had after I got shot. Like damn did that hurt, especially the ringing in my ears.
Trying to roll to my side was a pretty painful endeavor, not as much as fighting fellow huntsmen in training though but I'm pretty sure they'd be rolling in the dirt if they ever catch an explosion and barely had time to focus their aura.
Then I felt footsteps coming from both the left and right side, and I was suddenly lifted up to my feet, well almost to my feet anyway, my legs weren't propped as well as I hoped but it was enough at least.
After finding my footing I turned to the ones who helped me and I wasn't surprised to see Xiao Long's sister and the cashier at my sides, both giving me concerned looks as the former was zipping around asking if I was okay.
I put my hand on the girl's shoulder to stop her from moving around, which worked though it was probably because of the sudden touch than anything else, the girl was a shy one last time he saw her after all. "I'm fine, barely left a scratch on me." Was all I said before turning my attention back to the man from earlier.
Who was already near the roof of the building across the street.
"Tsk." I spun Xiao Long's sister around and pointed at the man who had just climbed to the top. She gasped and made a run for him, but not before saying sorry to the cashier for the window she broke.
I walked to where I had dropped my temporary weapons and picked them up. I then turned to the cashier and gave him a simple nod before following after her, using my semblance to cover the jump I had to make.
Once I felt solid ground once more I immediately ran towards Xiao Long's sister, who was across from the man from earlier. "End of the line jackass!" Ignoring the gasp that came from the girl, I aimed the gun once more at the fashionable man and focused my semblance into the bullet inside of the chamber. "Now I'm just gonna say this one last time. Surrender, or eat lead."
Then the familiar sound of a bullhead entered my ears and not a second later, one flew up to the roof with a bright light aimed towards us. I used my other arm to shield my eyes from the bright light but I could make out the man's form climbing into the bullhead.
"And like I said Crimson, I would, but it'd be more trouble than it's worth!" After those words I heard glass rolling on solid groun- OH SHIT THAT WASN'T GLASS-
I felt a body slam into me and heard an explosion, going off pure muscle memory I immediately absorbed the residual heat from the explosion with my semblance, leaving not a trace of heat from the dust crystal. But I did temporarily lose my hearing again.
I turned around on the ground and saw that it was Xiao Long's sister who tackled me out of the way. I pulled her arm off of me and tried to stand up, pulling her up with me as I did.
Though to my surprise there wasn't even a bit of soot or debris on her person or mine, I turned to my left and knew why now. A huntress, standing before us holding up some sort of protective barrier.
Before I could analyze her features further, the woman flicked her wrist forward and launched what seems to be energy projectiles which came from the barrier beforehand, said projectiles impacted the bullhead, hitting the most vital areas of the ship. I barely saw a glympse of the orange haired man trying to find his balance on the ship before he was gone from my sight.
"Woah." I heard Xiao Lon- fuck it I'm calling her little red for now, the former name was way too damn long. Anyway, I heard little red say in awe. I mean who wouldn't be? It was a huntress in action! Even in Pharos we rarely saw our professors in serious action.
As the huntress' barrage on the bullhead continued, said barrage turned into a literal hail of sharp ice too which was sick, I saw a new figure appear from where I assumed the cockpit was. Going off from the silhouette I assumed this new figure was a woman that and the red high cut dress gave the impression more weight.
Her hand conjured a flame, something not too dissimilar from my own semblance which meant only one thing. Fireball.
My guess was soon proven correct when she launched said fireball at the huntress, I already went ahead and absorbed the heat from it in an attempt to help, however when the fireball landed on the huntress' barrier it turned into something semi liquid, like melted... well anything really.
Then I saw the splotches glow brightly around the huntress. Me and little red tried to shout out a warning but the huntress already flipped backwards before a pillar of fire erupted where she had once stood. I once again absorbed what heat that pillar left behind and I already felt like I was reaching my more comfortable limit.
The huntress landed next to us and used the debris from the pillar to counterattack, which the woman in the red dress countered with more fireballs but it was for naught as the huntress used it to her advantage as the debris replicated what she had done earlier.
Then a sudden blast of heat washed over us as every single piece of debris turned to cinder. Which gave the bullhead a much needed reprieve in order to retreat.
Before I knew it, I gathered every bit of the heat I absorbed earlier, and coated two bullets with it, one in the chamber and the bullet coming after it. With this much power I hoped the gun would hold out these two shots.
I ignored the gunshots from little red's gun, I ignored the fact the woman in red deflected them with her hand, and I ignored the growing heat from under our feet. All that mattered now was making this shot and the follow up land.
There's no sound, there's no people, all there is right now is me, and the enemy. I pull the trigger.
"...Cero."
What follows was a series of events that turned into a blur for me, as I was suddenly and violently thrown back from the force of my own attack. I felt myself hit a brick wall, hell I was probably indented into it. My right hand also felt like I just dipped it into molten metal for half a minute and I didn't feel the gun anymore. My semblance must've been too much for the poor thing.
For the most part I was fine, I already felt my aura heal the burns on my hand as I pushed myself out of the indentation. My eyes were also a little blurry but I was able to catch sight of little red and the huntress on the rooftop across. The bullhead was also a blur but it had what I assumed was a plume of smoke coming off it.
I sneered. Feeling a bit miffed that they still managed to get away, but what's done is done. I jumped across from where I was and returned to the roof where all the action happened.
Both the huntress and little red turned their heads towards me, one held a cold and calculating gaze while the other held wonder, amazement, and just a bit of fear. I scanned the surroundings and saw the black flames of my semblance scattered about, burning the junk on the roof, as well as the large gash I left on the concrete from using Cero.
I scratched the back of my head, and said the dumbest thing possible in that situation. "Ehehehe... oops?"
~~~Present~~~
And yeah, that's how I found myself here at the interrogation room. By my side a very dejected little red, and a very angry huntress chiding us for our admittedly reckless actions. I wasn't paying much attention even when I looked like I was, I already had this conversation with my mother about as many times as I burned myself with my semblance... which was a lot.
A very loud slap jumped me out of my musings as I visibly flinched from the table. I looked at the table as saw the huntress had slapped her riding crop on the table. "But, there is someone here who would like to meet you two." And with those words the huntress moved away.
The door to the interrogation room opened and in walked in a man I wasn't expecting to see until a few weeks later, Professor Ozpin, who had a plate of chocolate chip cookies in his hand right hand and a mig of what I assumed was hot chocolate based on the aroma.
"Brook Ashton, Ruby Rose." He said as he leaned forward, though I think he was more focused on Ruby than me. "You... have silver eyes."
I raised an eyebrow at that comment and looked at Ruby, I mean it was obvious she had silver eyes, but then again you could mistake it for white or gray from far away.
"So!" The headmaster of Beacon Academy stood upright and pointed at the scroll in the huntress' hand. "Where did you learn to do this?" It showed video footage of Ruby kicking the asses of the men who tried to rob From Dust till Dawn.
I gave a low whistle from seeing the action but immediately wilted when I saw the pointed look on the huntress' face and the amused look on Ozpin's
"S-Signal Academy." I heard Ruby reply to Ozpin's question. That was a surprise, last I heard Signal didn't have any teachers that wielded scythes.
"They taught you to use one of the most dangerous weapons ever designed?" Well the scythe is dangerous, adding a .50 caliber sniper rifle to it would make it even more dangerous yeah, but it was pretty similar to a glaive, a weapon that he has had experience with. Only difference was the scythe had its blade facing the user, which would also make it dangerous to the user.
"Well, one teacher in particular."
"I see." Ozpin then slid a plate of cookies towards Ruby. She took one and ate it. Whole. Then another, and another. How she's able to eat several cookies whole and keep on eating, I'll never know. "It's just I've only ever seen one scythe wielder of that skill before. A dusty old Qrow."
"Mmm! Thash muh unkul!" Ozpin raised an eyebrow just as Ruby swallowed the cookies in her mouth and sighed in relief, wiping off the cookie crumbs with her sleeve.
"Sorry, that's my uncle Qrow! He's a teacher at Signal. I was complete garbage before he took me under his wing, and now I'm all like-" I instinctively ducked as Ruby began to mimic kung fu noises and poses from those Mistralial martial arts films.
"So I've noticed." Then he put his mug down. "Tell me Ms. Rose, what is an adorable little girl such as yourself doing at a school designed to train warriors?"
Ruby cleared her throat. "Well... I want to be a Huntress."
"You want to slay monsters?" Ozpin asked.
The red cloaked girl then went on to explain her specific reasons for wanting to become a huntress but she was speaking a little too fast even by my standards that I probably missed several things.
A small genuine smile made itself known on Ozpin's face. "...Do you know who I am?" He asked out of the blue.
I blinked twice. It was an odd question since Ozpin is one of the most influential people on Remnant. "You're Professor Ozpin, you're the headmaster of Beacon Academy." I heard Ruby answer.
He nodded. "Hello."
Ruby returned the gesture. "Nice to meet you."
The professor then leaned on his hands towards Ruby. "You want to come to my school?"
I saw a look of determination appear on Ruby's face. One I hadn't really seen on anyone when they said they wanted to go to a huntsman academy or asked about it.
"More than anything." Was all she had said.
The two adults looked at each other, with the woman giving an eye roll and what I assumed to be a scoff.
"Well alright then."
... wait what? Did she just-
~~~3 Minutes later~~~
After Ruby was let out of the room with news that she was going to be attending Beacon two years early, with the huntress from earlier accompanying her, that left me alone with the headmaster of Beacon Academy.
"Mr. Ashton, I didn't think I'd be meeting two potential students of my school on the same night, much less ones that are involved with something like this."
I really didn't have much to say, I just went with the flow during the whole thing and caused a hell of a lot more damages than I should've. Which just left me with scratching the back of my head to alleviate some of the anxiety.
"Don't worry, your application won't be affected by this incident. At the very least with your help the VPD was able to track the Bullhead the criminal used to get away."
"I... probably could've done that without resorting to property damage Professor." I admit, Infernum Nero was able to output less destructive shots after all.
"That may be true, but from your file, the words of your teachers and peers, as well as the footage from the surveillance cameras, you didn't have much of a choice."
So he's dug some info about me, it would make sense since I am going to his school. "Still..."
"No more of that now Mr. Ashton. As far as anyone knows, you tried your best to stop a crime. Now, do you have any questions?"
"Do I have to pay for the damages I caused?"
He shook his head. "Normally yes, but since you're still a minor, the damages will be paid by the government. Until you turn 18 or enter our second year, damages will often be paid by either me or the government. Anything else?"
I shook my head. "No sir."
He stood up from his seat and motioned me to follow him. "Good, now that that's settled I believe it's time you go home. Your father had just reported from his mission earlier so I suggest you take a headstart." He took a sip from his mug and walked out the room.
"Oh shi-" I quickly got up and followed Professor Ozpin out the door. I am so dead if dad gets home before I do.
Once we got out of the station, I immediately bolted out of there.
"I'll be seeing you next month Mr. Ashton!" I heard Ozpin say from the distance.
I knew that of course, but right now I was more focused on getting back or else my training session would become a literal hellscape!
