Katie and Sadie were the best of friends.

To say that Katie and Sadie were inseparable was an understatement. They pretty much did everything together, and the two of them wore this fact on their sleeves. They went to school together, hung out together, obsessed over boys together, even got dressed together.

Okay, that last one Katie would be a bit more reluctant to admit. She had her limits, and she knew Sadie did as well. However, the best part about all this was the fact that they knew each other so well. They could easily bounce thoughts off each other, relive past experiences, and in the end, nothing would change.

Or at least, that's what Katie thought back then, and it was what was on Katie's mind as she laid in her bed, staring up at the ceiling.

It all started with Total Drama Island, that reality show the two best friends signed up for. Sadie was the one who suggested it, as a way to show off their friendship. That, and with the logic of them just teaming up to win the million, it seemed fool-proof.

Unfortunately, a few snags were hit, with the two of them getting into a fight, eventually culminating with Katie being eliminated rather early, but not before giving Sadie some words of encouragement. Those words unfortunately didn't seem to work however, as Sadie was gone not long after. Thankfully, Katie was there to greet her first, and things were fine, even after they elected to never return to the series.

Things actually weren't fine, Katie thought.

While the two still hung out a lot, and even watched the show that nearly tore apart their friendship, some of the things they used to do a lot seemed to slowly be phased out of their routine. While Katie was no stranger to change, and she had to admit, she wasn't exactly the smartest person in the world, she couldn't help but notice this.

Perhaps the most notable thing that was phased out was their obsession with boys. Katie was still downright ga-ga over them, in fact, even when watching Revenge of the Island, she definitely had a bit of a crush on Mike, and was more than willing to discuss it with Sadie. Sadie on the other hand didn't seem that into Mike, or really, any of the guys that season.

Fair enough, this cast didn't have the hunks that their season had like Justin, and Mike himself was a bit divisive, so she couldn't exactly blame her.

Then they watched All-Stars, and the moments that weren't spent racking their brains on how Sam got on All-Stars or just wanting to turn the TV off were spent on admiring Alejandro, who Katie had to admit was better looking than Justin. Those pecs, that voice, it just made Katie swoon.

Sadie...had pretty much no reaction to it.

Then came Pahkitew Island, and this was the first season where Katie really struggled on finding someone to swoon over, because the options were more limited than placements for Ezekiel. There was Topher she thought, and maybe if Shawn took a bath and lost the zombie schtick then maybe he'd be swoon material. But no, pretty much nothing there, and of course, Sadie seemed almost uninterested in talking about anyone aside from Sammy or Jasmine. Katie couldn't blame her however, they were really cool.

Come to think of it, Sadie seemed almost dismissive of the idea of discussing boys, especially after watching Pahkitew. What was once one of their biggest hobbies was now something that Sadie seemed to actively ignore. She thought it was just with Total Drama, but no, it was also with real life.

Not only that, but Sadie had been acting more distant with Katie. Previously, they made an effort to hang out every day, but now it was pretty much down to once a week. Once more, Katie made excuses for this change in behavior, as maybe she was busy. She mentioned she was trying to get a job at that ice cream store, so maybe she was trying to focus?

No, there was no job she was going to. Sadie was just…distant.

That wasn't even to mention that the whole ice cream job was something they were supposed to do together, and she didn't even want to get dressed with her anymore. They've been doing this for a long time, so she was wondering what exactly changed.

As for why she was thinking about this?

"Hey, can I come over tonight, I need to tell you something."

At one in the morning, she got that text.

Of course Katie said yes. Not because she was her best friend, although that was one of the reasons, but it was actually because Katie wanted answers. Why was Katie suddenly not boy crazy, why was she distant from her, what exactly changed?

Was this the end of the friendship?

The doorbell caught her attention, and Katie breathed a sigh of relief that her parents were out for the week, which meant she could get some quiet time with Sadie. She really didn't need her parents barging in and asking what's been going on. Yeah, she did confess her worries to her parents, but she didn't know who else to tell.

Dressed in her pink pajamas, Katie would make her way downstairs and open up the front door, revealing her best friend in Sadie, who looked incredibly nervous. Judging by the wrinkled clothes, Sadie clearly put it on in a hurry, as if she wasn't expecting Katie to be up at this hour. It honestly looked a bit worrisome, but Katie was going to suppress it.

After all, Sadie was her best friend.

"Hi Sadie." Katie spoke in a tone that, to her dismay, came off as bitter. "Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like that."

"It's okay Katie." Sadie replied. "Can I come in?"

"Of course, do you need anything?" Katie asked.

"No, I just need to sit down for a moment."

Stepping aside to let Sadie in, Katie took note of how she walked. Instead of her usual walk filled with pride and enthusiasm, here it was more focused, but at the same time unnerved. It was a situation that was almost alien to Katie, and it was a situation she didn't even see on Total Drama after she was eliminated.

Katie could tell something was on her mind, and as the two sat down on the living room couch, Katie was all but ready to jump into questions. One look at Sadie's face put a hold on that. She didn't want to overwhelm her with questions, so she just decided to play it safe.

"How are you doing?" Katie asked. Sadie took a moment to respond.

"I'm okay." Katie once more noticed that the response seemed a bit…off. It was like when a kid just stole something and was nervous to admit it. Maybe not the best allegory, but it was the first that came to Katie's mind.

"Are you sure?" Katie asked. This resulted in Sadie letting out a small sigh.

"I'm sorry."

Katie raised a brow. What exactly did Sadie have to be sorry for? Nothing bad really happened to Katie recently, and even if they did, she knew Sadie wasn't dumb enough to do something that would hurt her in some way.

"What do you mean?" Katie asked.

"I mean, I'm sorry for not being…the most approachable."

Oh, that's what she meant.

"Sadie, are you okay?" Katie asked. "For a while you've been distant, like, we don't really hang out as often as we used to anymore."

A long pause followed. A pause that pretty much did nothing but unnerve Katie. Whatever Sadie had on her mind, it must be deep enough to want to talk about it at this hour at night.

"Katie, when I was alone on Total Drama without you, I had a lot to really think about." Sadie spoke. "I didn't focus on boys, mainly because I had no time to."

"You thought of me, right?" Katie asked.

"Of course, you're my best friend!" Sadie replied a bit too eagerly. "Sorry." She quickly replied. Katie didn't respond however, instead gesturing to her to keep going. Whatever Sadie was going to say, Katie was going to listen, because that's what friends do.

"I might be gay."

The moment Sadie said that, she quickly buried her face in her hands out of sheer embarrassment. Katie on the other hand had to take a moment to sort of process this. As she did this, she realized that this actually made quite a bit of sense. The lack of boy talk, the changing together stopping, the overall distantness of her, maybe Sadie was worried about coming out.

Katie was jarred out of her thoughts when she heard the faint sound of Sadie crying. Sadie crying was the thing that immediately made Katie go into protective mode. Katie would gently place her hands on Sadie's arms, slowly allowing them to lower, although Sadie's head was tilted down, hiding Sadie's tear-stricken face.

"I'm sorry that I didn't tell you for so long, and I understand if you're mad and you don't want to be friends anymore-"

"Katie, why wouldn't I want to be friends with you?" Katie asked. That immediately made Sadie's head pop back up, giving Katie a better look at Sadie.

"Because I haven't told you."

Katie shook her head at this, and proceeded to hug Sadie tightly. This wasn't just a friendship hug, nor even an acceptance hug, although they could count as one in Katie's mind. This hug was something that both Katie and Sadie needed.

This was a hug of gratitude.

Katie was happy that Sadie wasn't ending their friendship, and she could tell Sadie was happy that Katie accepted her. As for how she could tell?

"Sadie, I was so worried that we were growing apart because of something that I couldn't understand." Katie spoke. "I don't care if you're gay or anything else, you're still my best friend at the end of the day."

With that, Sadie immediately hugged Katie back, and Katie couldn't help but shed a few tears in joy that there was nothing wrong or nothing changed. Well, okay, Sadie's gay now, but that's nothing that big. It just means that they have more stuff to talk about.

Come to think of it…

"Hey Sadie?" Katie asked as soon as the hug was released.

"Yeah?" Sadie asked, taking a moment to wipe her eyes.

"When did this start?"

Sadie took a moment to think, all while Katie waited intently. She was going to make Sadie comfortable with herself, no matter what.

"Remember when we watched Revenge?" Sadie asked.

"Yeah, let me guess, you liked one of the girls there?" Katie replied.

"I did kind of find Dawn pretty, I'd say that's what started it." Sadie spoke. "Then we got to that Pahkitew Island season.

"Not a lot of lookers there." Katie spoke, to which Sadie let out a small laugh. "I'll say, who were we supposed to fawn over, Rodney?"

"I doubt he'd mind." Katie replied, before sharing another laugh with her. She had to admit, this was nice.

"So uh, Pahkitew Island, what about it?" Katie asked. "Who was it, Jasmine?"

"Sammy." Sadie replied.

"Really?" Katie asked. "Even when you couldn't tell the difference between her and Amy?"

"Sammy's just…really cute." Sadie stammered out. Katie would then think for a moment, really trying to remember what Sammy looked like. Once she got a memory of how she looked in her head, she couldn't help but nod her head.

"You know what, yeah, she really is."

Sadie let out a content sigh at this, as did Katie, and they both leaned back against the couch. They were doing this as friends. Actually no, not friends, best friends.

"You know, I'm not into girls, right?" Katie asked a little too abruptly. She couldn't help but cringe at the delivery, but one look at Sadie eased her nerves. Sadie didn't seem to really mind.

"That's fine, I'm just happy you're okay with it." Sadie spoke.

Katie could've just ended it there, but there was one question she had to ask.

"What made you want to tell me?" Katie asked. A bit of a pause followed, before Sadie pulled out her phone and began scrolling through her social media. After a bit of time, she showed the profile for the aforementioned Sammy.

"She came out yesterday." Sadie spoke, handing the phone to Katie, who proceeded to read it over.

"So, this is going to be a bit difficult to admit, but I'm gay. I've been like this for a while now, and while it was a bit nerve-racking, I decided that if there's one thing I'm not going to have Amy do, it's out me."

Katie couldn't help but look into the comments section, and she couldn't help but grin at all the support Sammy had gotten. From fans who were happy for her, to people who of course were bashing Amy. That was to be expected of course.

What particularly caught her interested was that some Total Drama alumni had commented on the post as well. People from the season she was on like Shawn, Jasmine, Sky, Dave (which certainly surprised her), to people from previous seasons. She recognized Owen, Gwen, DJ, LeShawna, Geoff and Bridgette, Mike, Zoey, and Cameron, nearly everyone was there supporting her.

Even scrolling down a bit further, she couldn't help but notice a few of the supportive comments were a bit more…flirty in nature. Of course, she had to do a double take, and even show Sadie what she was seeing when Anne Maria of all alumni entered a sort of playful banter that very well could mean something. Who knew Anne Maria was supportive, and even more, might've been into Sammy.

And yet, there was a hint of sadness in this. Katie couldn't help but remember that this wasn't something that Sammy had entirely built up the courage to do on her own terms, but rather, in fear that Amy would out her before she was ready. This was something that no one deserved.

Not even her best friend, and she had to admit, she was very lucky that she got to come out on her own terms.

"You know, if you want, we could rewatch the seasons, talk about the girls if you want." Katie spoke, handing the phone back to Sadie.

"You'd be okay with that?" Sadie asked, to which Katie shrugged.

"I'm down, besides, it'd give us more stuff to talk about than just boys and dumb stuff like that."

The two of them stood up and went right to Katie's room, with the news still fresh in the occupant's head. Sadie was gay, and that's okay. She was going to support her.

Because that's what friends do.

So yeah, I wanted to try a small deviation from writing the Over the Hedge series, and instead focus on a series that I really like.

I also wanted to write something more wholesome for a change, as well as get a few weird headcanons for me out there.
