We all stared down at the message, unsure what to think of it. Somehow, I got the feeling Cerise had something to do with this. I wasn't convinced that was even her real name.
"Who was she," Emily asked as though reading my mind.
I frowned. "I don't know. But we need to find out. If we could see her face, maybe that would help."
Alison frowned. "She seemed to have some sort of accent. Maybe she knew Alex? Or your sister?"
I had to admit, it was possible. Both of them had spent time out of the country. But I couldn't be sure.
"It's a place to start," I finally admitted.
Over the next few days, I contacted Melissa and tried to find out if she knew anyone named Cerise. But it was a dead end. And even if I could contact Alex, I doubted she would help us. But I couldn't stop thinking about Cerise. I had to see her face.
Finally, I spotted her as I was coming home one day. She was at the end of the street with her back to me. As I approached, she turned around.
"Spencer," she said sweetly. "What a surprise."
I frowned. "We need to talk Cerise."
Cerise sighed. "I have to be somewhere. But I guess I can spare a moment for you."
I smiled. "First, can you take off your hood? It might be easier to have a conversation with you if I can see your face."
Cerise frowned. "My appearance surely isn't relevant to this conversation. Besides, I don't trust you enough."
I frowned. "Why don't you trust me?"
Cerise smiled. "You're a smart girl Spencer. You'll figure it out." With that, she turned and walked away from me.
